The Scoop The Town of Conception Bay South is pleased to present The Scoop, a publication dedicated to providing residents with important information and to highlight significant Town milestones and achievements. The Scoop is published following each public Council meeting. June 15, 2018 Mark Your Calendars! Kelligrews Soiree Happening July 7-13 Conception Bay South s summer festival is right around the corner The Town is excited to announce details about the highly anticipated Kelligrews Soiree, an annual summer festival that will take place from July 7-13, 2018. The Kelligrews Soiree has something for everyone! It s a full seven days of music, food and festivities that showcases the incredible culture and talent of our region. I would like to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of our many volunteers and staff who always make this festival one of the best our province has to offer, says Mayor Terry French. On Saturday, July 7, the Kelligrews Soiree kicks-off with an 8 km road race, sponsored by Tim Hortons, a free pancake breakfast at the Conception Bay South Arena, sponsored by Home Hardware, and the Kelligrews Soiree Garden Party at Sgt. Ned Nugent s Field. The Garden Party is an outdoor concert for ages 19 and over, and features some of the top musical talent in the province. Early-bird tickets are now on sale by visiting the Town s website. The Family Folk Festival will take place on Sunday, July 8 from 12 4 p.m. at Richard Parsons Memorial Field. The free event includes bouncy castles, games, live entertainment, and more. This year s Kelligrews Soiree will feature exciting, new events including the Doggie Parade and Party, the Arts Walk, and the Kelligrews Soiree Preteen Dance. It will also include many fan-favourite events, such as Paint Nite, Concert at Topsail Beach, the Big Rig Rodeo, and more. Additional details will be released over the coming days. Stay tuned by visiting www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/kelligrews-soiree or by following the Kelligrews Soiree on Facebook.

Council Highlights (as per the Public Council Meeting June 12, 2018) Mental Health First Aid The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is offering a Mental Health First Aid course to residents this month. YAC has been looking at ways to increase public awareness of mental health and has identified this two-day course as a great initiative. It will take place on June 23 and 24. Visit the Town s website to register. National Indigenous Peoples Day The Town would like to acknowledge that June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. According to the latest census data, in 2016 there were 910 Indigenous people living in our Town. June 21 is a day for us to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Indigenous people. Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. Please connect with the St. John s Native Friendship Centre to learn about all the events taking place to celebrate this day. ATV Committee Update Congrats to Paul Connors, Mitch Somers and Gerard Clarke on being appointed as Chair and Vice Chairs of the Conception Bay South ATV Committee. Kelligrews Soiree Arts Walk Calling all artists, musicians and performers! As part of the 2018 Kelligrews Soiree, the Town is planning an Arts Walk around the trails of Manuels River. If you are interested in being showcased as an artist, artisan or performer for this event, please contact Carla Hodder at 834-6500 ext. 611. Safety Reminder - Power Tools and Equipment Yard work increases this time of year as weather improves. When working in your backyard, it is important to know how to safely use your power tools and equipment. You can avoid injury and accidents by maintaining these items. Read, understand and follow the manufacturer s instructions before using a power tool. Equipment should only be used for its intended purpose. Inspect equipment before use to make sure that it is in good working order and safety guards are in place. Remove rocks, sticks, toys and tools from the lawn before using power equipment. Before plugging in any power equipment, make sure the power switch is turned off. Keep children away from the mowing area and never allow them to operate or ride a lawnmower. Never mow or use electrical equipment in wet conditions. A lawnmower can overturn on a slope or on wet grass, and rocks and debris can fly out from underneath. Never operate tools with frayed cords or during wet conditions, as there is potential for electric shock. If the blades of a power lawnmower become clogged, turn off or unplug the machine before clearing it. Use a stick or other tool to remove the clogged debris in case the blades complete a rotation after clearing. Remember, loud noise from power garden equipment can gradually cause permanent hearing loss and the inability to hear warning sounds. Also, always wear proper gear when using power tools, such as: Leather shoes Workboots Gloves Safety glasses Hearing protection

A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK PART IN OUR 3 HOUR CHALLENGE TO HELP CLEAN OUR TOWN! Your volunteer efforts are greatly appreciated and go a long way in helping to keep our Town clean and beautiful.

PUBLIC NOTICES Discovery Day Town Schedule Garbage and recycling schedules remain unchanged; however Town facilities will be closed on Monday, June 25, 2018. ATV Safety With summer just around the corner, we would like to remind everyone to please exercise caution while operating ATVs. A few important things to keep in mind when operating an ATV include: Don t drive along public roads and highways Never drink and drive an ATV Only carry passengers on ATVs designed for a second person Respect the environment More great tips on ATV safety can be found online by visiting www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca/drivers/atvsafety Notice T Railway Disruption Please be advised that due to infrastructure upgrades on Heritage Road, it may be necessary at intermittent periods for vehicular traffic to access the T Railway between Kennedys Road and Heritage Road. This access will be limited to emergency vehicles, local residents of Heritage Road, and necessary construction equipment and may occur during the month of June. Should you have any questions, please contact the Engineering and Public Works Department at 834-6500 ext. 301. Fireworks Fireworks can be a fun and exciting addition to any social event. However, please keep in mind that fireworks can also be a form of distress to some children, adults and pets. A permit is required to discharge fireworks within the Town. The free permit is available at Station 1 in Kelligrews from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Permits are not required for fireworks displays on Canada Day and New Years Eve. Fireworks cannot be discharged within 30 metres of a dwelling, structure, wood, brush or other flammable material. Residents are encouraged to strictly follow the manufacturer s guidelines and are asked to review the Town s Noise and Nuisance Regulations prior to discharging any fireworks. Copies of this regulation will be provided with all issued permits and can be viewed at www.conceptionbaysouth.ca/regulations. For additional inquiries, please contact the Conception Bay South Fire Department at 834-6540. Backyard Fireplace Safety Always use caution when burning in an outdoor fireplace. Backyard fireplaces should be built into the ground, or on brick, stone or other non-combustible surface, with a minimum surface area of 1.5 metres. They must be at least 3.5 meters away from your property line, house, garage, fence or flammable material. A mesh screen or spark guard is required to reduce the spread of embers and sparks. Fires should not be lit if wind speeds are over 15 km/hour. Only burn clean, dry firewood in your fire pit. Never burn wood that is painted or treated, yard waste, garbage, rubber or plastic. Be aware of the noise you are making and remember that quiet hours are 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day. In case of emergency, always have a water hose close by and never leave children unsupervised around a wood burning device. Permits are not required for a backyard fireplace, but you are required to follow the Town s Open Air Burning Regulations. Visit the Town s website for more information on backyard fireplaces.

Learn Not to Burn Program CBS Elementary The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services Learn Not to Burn Program visited CBS Elementary on May 2324. Topics covered include stop, drop and roll, smoke alarms, candles, cooking hazards, and fire extinguishers. A Hazard House, which is a big doll house with electronics and smoke, is used to help promote a hands-on approach. The Conception Bay South Fire Department were also present. Members of B-Shift, under the direction of Captain Murphy, spoke to children about important safety information and showed them how a firefighter looks in full bunker gear and how they may sound when wearing a breathing apparatus. Rainbow Crosswalk The Town recently painted a rainbow pride crosswalk near Holy Spirit High School. This picture was shared to the Town s Twitter account with a thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. Communities for Climate Change On June 11, the Towns of Conception Bay South and Portugal Cove-St. Philip s, as well as representatives from ICLEI, Wood, and various community partners, came together for an afternoon workshop focusing on climate change adaptation. The meeting laid the groundwork for the coming months, as each municipality works towards creating a meaningful plan to help become more adaptable and resilient to a changing climate.
