ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVY Greetings to all Ex Servicemen and Women. Do you hear there! OP NEPTUNE PÃNUI ISSUE 5 JULY/AUGUST 2016 SLOPS Naval name for any article of clothing (ready made) which can be purchased from the ship s clothing store. Slops were introduced into the Navy in 1623. The compartment in a ship where slops are kept and issued is called the SLOP ROOM. The intending purchaser indents for his requirements on an established form called a SLOP CHIT; this name has come to mean metaphorically the amount of work a man has to do or responsibility he assumes, in the phrase It s on your slop chit now THE INTERNATIONAL NAVAL REVIEW BOAT TOURS There are two options for veterans who wish to take part in boat tours of the assembled fleet during the International Naval Review. The RNZN is chartering general purpose boats for use as liberty and stores boats during the Review, and one of these will be available to take veteran s out to follow the Reviewing Ship with the Governor General embarked (HMNZS OTAGO) during the Review proper. This will be free of charge to former naval men and women of all ranks, and it is hoped to accommodate up to 90. A certain level of mobility will be necessary although everything possible will be done to ensure the comfort and safety of our veterans. Alcohol will not be served aboard this vessel (or any vessel operating under the aegis of the Navy). Exact details of timings and how to apply for a place will be promulgated by all possible means in due course. In addition to the opportunity that the RNZN will provide, the Old Salts Association has secured the tug William C Daldy for use during these celebrations, including a trip in the wake of the Reviewing Ship during the Naval Review by the Governor General. Use the booking form overleaf to reserve your places for these sailings and functions onboard. (All departure times are subject to change.) The question was asked: whether the Old Salts are running a ballot system for any of the sailings, especially the International Naval Review day on 19 November. The Old Salts committee has decided that it will be first up best dressed for places aboard the William C. Daldy. The only proviso is that for the Naval Review, preference will be given to ex serving members. If by chance the sailing is undersubscribed places will be opened to partners. Otherwise you must have served with the RNZN or RNZNVR. The William C Daldy is fully licensed, and the bar will be open for all sailings except the Naval Review proper. We would expect that up spirits is likely to be called on more than one occasion. If you do partake, please ensure that you have a dedicated driver or guide to get you back to your accommodation. The complete History of the Royal New Zealand Navy (Abridged) This is a fast paced naval romp through the decades. From the arrival of Captain Cook in 1769 through to protecting trades routes against piracy around the Horn of Africa in 2015, The Complete History of the Royal New Zealand Navy (Abridged) navigates it way around the world s oceans through song, satire and silliness. Don t expect a history lesson but don t be surprised if you learn something. The Navy as you never knew it but fun for the whole family 2. Commander Claire & the Pirates of Provence Ooh la la! Something sinister is afoot. New Zealand is under attack from the infamous French Pirate Captain Langlois and his fiendish Gallic rooster Napoleon. From the Hauraki Gulf to Foveaux Strait, nowhere is safe from his piratical plundering. When all else fails New Zealand turns to the Royal New Zealand Navy and the courageous Commander Claire to lead the resistance against the feisty French marauder. What she uncovers could change the course of New Zealand history forever! Commander Claire & the Pirates of Provence is written by Gregory Cooper and directed by Mark Hadlow. In keeping with the naval history theme of their evening show The Complete History of the RNZN, they have produced this wildly imaginative children s pantomime. This fast-paced, funny show has lots of audience participation, puppetry, songs and over-theshoulder cardboard ships. Commander Claire & the Pirates of Provence is perfect kids entertainment fare that will not just appeal to children from age 5 upwards but will also have grown ups chuckling.
