So it must be summer, but the last week in May sure did not feel like it. With global weather change, we do not know what to expect. I am hoping that it will be a pleasantly warm summer. I am looking forward to enjoying all the normal summer activities, including barbecuing, going to the coast, and vacation with the grandchildren. As usual the summer will go by too fast, but I plan to savor every minute. Little SIR Report SIR Chuck Wolf June 2015 At our May luncheon, Petaluma Mayor David Glass gave a very compelling talk about CAL-PERS and union strength when it come to reign in their untouchable retirement/benefits. His talk was very informative and well received by most SIRs present. We invited a representative from P.E.F. to speak to us in June. Clark Rosen, a member of the Petaluma Education Foundation, will be our guest speaker. I enjoyed the May Luncheon having speaker Mayor Glass attend and learned a lot about local problems and politics. Thanks, Chuck, for arranging for the Mayor to speak to us. A reminder to all, that I will not be attending the June meeting, but Chuck will be filling in for me. Thanks again Chuck! Sue and I are going away for a week of relaxation before her open heart surgery on July 7 to repair a heart valve. So please send her your good thoughts and prayers. SIR Mike Burwen, Branch 147 Editor s notation: The UNIVAC I (UNIVersal Automatic Computer I) was accepted by the United States Census Bureau on March 31, 1951, and was dedicated on June 14 that year. It measured roughly 382 sq feet, nearly taking up a 20 x 20 room, which also included a central processing unit (CPU) measuring about 52 cu ft and had a memory capacity of 1000 words. It consisted of 5,200 vacuum tubes, and weighed 29,000 pounds. My first computer, which I purchased in 1980, had a memory storage of 32 kilobytes and with the 64-k upgrade, it was boosted to 96-k; still not even 1 megabyte!! June 11, 1963- An elderly Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc sat down in the street in front of a pagoda in Saigon to protest Diem s policies. Associated Press correspondent Malcolm "Mal" Browne photographed him sitting quietly in the lotus position as the flames consumed him. June 11, 1910- Undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997) was born in Ste-Andre-de-Cubzac, France. In 1943, he helped invent the first underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqualung. June 20, 1924- Audie Murphy, American military hero and actor was born in Kingston, Texas. June 28, 1862 - During the American Civil War, the siege of the Confederate city of Vicksburg began as Admiral David Farragut succeeded in taking a fleet past the Mississippi River stronghold. Two other fishermen walking in the opposite direction see the two lucky fishermen and ask Wow, how did you catch those? Well, its like this says Michael- Paddy here holds my legs over the bridge, and I grab the salmon as they swim up the river. We got four salmon! A great days fishing! So the fishless pair look at each other and agree to give it a try. They get to the bridge and Sean calls to his friend hold my legs now Shaemus. After he s been hanging there upside down for about five minutes he cries out Shaemus!! Pull me up, pull me up!! Shaemus asks Do you grab a fish Sean? Lets take a moment to think about the man who is our father. I hope that this thought is a positive one and you can recall many special times with him. Those of us who have been blessed with children of our own will take time to think of our early days when we were presented with a son or daughter of our own. Then, as time went on, some of us become grandparents or even great-grandparents. I have that as a part of my life and it continues to bless me. So, Happy FATHERS DAY to all!!
