So it must be summer, but the last week in May sure did not feel like it. With global weather change, we do not know what to expect. I am hoping that it will be a pleasantly warm summer. I am looking forward to enjoying all the normal summer activities, including barbecuing, going to the coast, and vacation with the grandchildren. As usual the summer will go by too fast, but I plan to savor every minute. Little SIR Report SIR Chuck Wolf June 2015 At our May luncheon, Petaluma Mayor David Glass gave a very compelling talk about CAL-PERS and union strength when it come to reign in their untouchable retirement/benefits. His talk was very informative and well received by most SIRs present. We invited a representative from P.E.F. to speak to us in June. Clark Rosen, a member of the Petaluma Education Foundation, will be our guest speaker. I enjoyed the May Luncheon having speaker Mayor Glass attend and learned a lot about local problems and politics. Thanks, Chuck, for arranging for the Mayor to speak to us. A reminder to all, that I will not be attending the June meeting, but Chuck will be filling in for me. Thanks again Chuck! Sue and I are going away for a week of relaxation before her open heart surgery on July 7 to repair a heart valve. So please send her your good thoughts and prayers. I expect to see you all at the July luncheon. May you all have a great summer. Ben Page 1 The Mission adopted by P.E.F. is: Every child has a dream. Petaluma Education Foundation creates community partnerships to fulfill these dreams. P.E.F. Grant and Scholarship programs enhance and enrich the academic experience of more that 13,000 students in Petaluma's 38 public, charter, and not-for-profit private schools. We believe in them. We empower them. We invest in the future. P.E.F. receives no public funding. The Foundation raises funds from individuals, corporations and foundations. In addition, P.E.F. manages Alphabet Soup, a thrift store located in downtown Petaluma. All proceeds from Alphabet Soup benefits the Foundation. The Petaluma Education Foundation is proud to present to the Class of 2015 a total of 336 awards to 241 students from 61 P.E.F. managed scholarship funds totaling $243,875. P.E.F. scholarships awarded since 1990 total $2,715,535 Chuck Chuck

Derlin JUNE BIRTHDAYS BUTCH ANGLIN 6/03 A church pastor decides to play hooky on a Sunday to play golf. He's playing the best golf of his life when an angel asks God, "Are you going to let this slide? Do something!" So God says, "Watch this." The pastor hits a 425-yard tee shot and the ball goes in the hole for a double eagle. The angel asks, "Why did you reward him?" God says, "Who s he gonna tell?" EDITOR S DESK: SIR Al Butler - JUNE S COMPUTER CLASS - The Computer and Smartphone Club will meet June 30, 2015, from 1:30-3:00 PM at the Senior Center as usual. The Senior Center asked us to do a session on the subject of security for the June meeting. Below is the announcement. Attached is the poster for that meeting. If you can use it and prefer a different file format, let me know. In keeping with the Senior Center's June theme, Security, the meeting will focus on Computer and Phone Scams, Rip-offs and Frauds. Our experts will be there to answer your questions and show you examples of the sort of rip-off schemes launched against unsuspecting seniors today. You will learn how to detect and avoid these scams and much more." SIR Mike Burwen, Branch 147 Editor s notation: The UNIVAC I (UNIVersal Automatic Computer I) was accepted by the United States Census Bureau on March 31, 1951, and was dedicated on June 14 that year. It measured roughly 382 sq feet, nearly taking up a 20 x 20 room, which also included a central processing unit (CPU) measuring about 52 cu ft and had a memory capacity of 1000 words. It consisted of 5,200 vacuum tubes, and weighed 29,000 pounds. My first computer, which I purchased in 1980, had a memory storage of 32 kilobytes and with the 64-k upgrade, it was boosted to 96-k; still not even 1 megabyte!! Considering today s super computers which are measured in terabytes (1 billion instructions per second) and higher, my first computer was kind of like one step above chiseling in stone.. Information gleaned from Wikipedia I recently came across the official parent newsletter of SIRINC.org named SIR Happenings. Below is some material I came across there- I recommend that you take a look for yourself, as there is much interesting reading about our regional SIR groups. Your Branch Website and the State Website provide access to newsletters, notices of upcoming events and activities, as well as reports and photos of the fun had by participants. Do your SIR friends read SIR Happenings? It s a great place to find out about the many things going on in SIR beyond your Branch. I encourage you to take advantage of the many sources of information about SIR available on the State and Branch websites. You might be surprised by all the interesting and entertaining things happening within other Branches throughout the Northern California SIR region. Copy and paste the following into your search barhttp://www.sirinc.org/sirhappenings. Branch #58 SIR member Bill Krelle and his wife Nan are seeking out those who might be interested in joining in a bi-monthly (or?) get-together for ongoing Pinochle fun and friendship. They are looking to form 4-handed team plays (aka) couples play. If you are interested, you can contact Bill or Nan at (707) 773-4702 here in Petaluma. NOTABLE HISTORICAL FACTS- JUNE EVENTS AND OTHER NOTES June 2, 1935- Baseball great Babe Ruth played his last ball-game. June 4, 1896- Henry Ford made the first successful test run with his horseless carriage in Detroit, Michigan. June 11, 1963- An elderly Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc sat down in the street in front of a pagoda in Saigon to protest Diem s policies. Two younger monks poured a mix of gasoline and jet fuel over him and, as the three had planned, set fire to him. Associated Press correspondent Malcolm "Mal" Browne photographed him sitting quietly in the lotus position as the flames consumed him. The photo was published worldwide under the title "The Ultimate Protest," raising (or in some cases reinforcing) doubts about the government that the democratic United States was supporting. June 11, 1910- Undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997) was born in Ste-Andre-de-Cubzac, France. In 1943, he helped invent the first underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqualung. He is best known for his Emmy Award winning television series, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, which premiered in the U.S. in 1968. June 20, 1924- Audie Murphy, American military hero and actor was born in Kingston, Texas. He was the most decorated American soldier of World War II, awarded 37 medals and decorations, including the Medal of Honor for single handedly turning back a German infantry company by climbing on a burning U.S. tank destroyer and firing its.50-cal. machine gun, killing 50 Germans. He later became an actor in western and war movies and made 45 films including; The Red Badge of Courage (1951), Destry (1954), and To Hell and Back (1955), based on his autobiography. He died May 28, 1971, in a plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia. June 28, 1862 - During the American Civil War, the siege of the Confederate city of Vicksburg began as Admiral David Farragut succeeded in taking a fleet past the Mississippi River stronghold. The siege continued over a year. FROM THE EDITOR Due to a series of recent health conditions, I am seriously considering the relinquishment of my position as Newsletter Editor for SIR Branch #58. I have enjoyed my time as such, but it is becoming clear that a back-up editor should be in place prior to my stepping down. If you are willing and interested.please see me at our next meeting, or give me a call at 707-658-0650 DO YOU NEED A RIDE TO THE MEETINGS? We would like all members to know that if you find it difficult to get to a monthly meeting, please give us a call. Fellow members would be quite happy to pick you up and get you back home safely. Just call SIR Len Svinth at 707-763-3254: He will put the word out to our members so that you won t miss out at our lively and entertaining luncheons. RESERVE YOUR TICKETS! Dec 4th, 2015- Call Derlin Two men were walking down the street with two salmon each under their arms. Two other fishermen walking in the opposite direction see the two lucky fishermen and ask Wow, how did you catch those? Well, its like this says Michael- Paddy here holds my legs over the bridge, and I grab the salmon as they swim up the river. We got four salmon! A great days fishing! So the fishless pair look at each other and agree to give it a try. They get to the bridge and Sean calls to his friend hold my legs now Shaemus. After he s been hanging there upside down for about five minutes he cries out Shaemus!! Pull me up, pull me up!! Shaemus asks Do you grab a fish Sean? No, replies Sean frantically, There s a bloody speed boat coming!!!!!!!! Our Branch 58 website is active Thanks to Joe Augustin, our website is now active- go check it out! As time goes on, more and more information will be added, along with photos and visuals. This is a work in progress, so please be patient as we endeavor to pull it all together. Our goal is to direct friends and acquaintances to see what we are about and what we offer as a friendly group of guys. Just cut & paste this address into your search barbranch58.sirinc2.org/ Due to an oversight in the May release of The Petaluman, the bio of Yogi Berra did not get installed properly. Sometimes, it just happens :( Thank you Al Page 64 My apologies, Al

Lets take a moment to think about the man who is our father. I hope that this thought is a positive one and you can recall many special times with him. Those of us who have been blessed with children of our own will take time to think of our early days when we were presented with a son or daughter of our own. Then, as time went on, some of us become grandparents or even great-grandparents. I have that as a part of my life and it continues to bless me. So, Happy FATHERS DAY to all!! MY thanks to SIR Gary Haugen for doing my part of the May program. As far as I know at this time most of the guys are doing well. Once again please let me know of any SIRs who could use a call or a card. So Smile and be happy. Please keep me in touch (707)-763-3254) as to others who need our support.
