Top News Ea gles Beat Primero: Head to Play offs By Rhonda Uhland The Ea gles are on to the play offs! With an other big win over the Primero Bull dogs in the cross-di vi - sional game held in Eads, 62-12. The weather was the only real dif fer ence in the last two con tests as the Fri day night game had tem per a tures in the 40 s with a bit ter wind chill and last Sat ur day s game was high 60 s and no wind. The Bull dogs did stun Eads with an open ing kick off re turn of 75 yards for a touch down by Jo nah Bol linger but the ex tra points were de nied. Eads an swered back with a Rouse to Parker pass for an 11 yard touch - down and Nate Dorow hit the ex tra two. Primero fum bled on their next pos ses sion giv - ing Eads super field po si - tion but with pen al ties Eads was driven back to the 18 yard line when Rouse worked his way into the end zone for touch down #2. Dorow again hit the ex tra two. Primero then had their sec ond big turn over as Rouse taps a pass from Ty ler Rouse (#89) look ing for a re ceiver in the foot - ball game Sat ur day, Oc to - ber 26 with Primero. (Honey Belle Dixon Photo) Primero s James Lujan and Eads Dylan Dixon co mes up with it on the Primero 39. Af ter a few drives it was an 11 yard touch down pass from Rouse to Caden Parker and Dorow held true to form with an other shot through the up rights. With an other of fense drive held to one 1st down yard age with the help of a QB sack from Trent Mitchek, Eads was re - ceiv ing the punt. It was a Rouse to Nate Dorow 6 yard touch down pass that put up an other 6 for Eads and Dorow added 2 more ad vanc ing Eads to an early, 32-6, lead. Primero s Lujan hit big #66, Julian Trujillo, for a cou ple passes and Eads gave up yard age on pen al - ties which al lowed the bull dogs to score on a 17-yard Lujan/Trujillo pass be fore the end of the first quar ter. Go ing with an onside kick put Eads back across the 40 yard line and Rouse found Winder for a beau ti ful 37 yard pass putt ing Eads on the 1 yard line. Winder was called to run it across on the very Dylan Dixon (#19) catch - ing the foot ball in the game against Primero. (Honey Belle Dixon Photo) next play and Dorow was per fect with the PAT. The kick off was fum bled on the re turn and Eads was again sit ting pretty on the Primero 15 with Rouse s re cov ery. Dylan Dixon had a 5 yard touch - down run and Dorow was kick ing 100% ad vanc ing Eads lead to 48-12. Eads got the ball back on downs as Mitchek and Nate Dorow helped keep them from 1st down yard - age with their QB sack. Rhett Uhland gets the handoff and finds an open ing go ing from the 19 but just short of the goal line. Eads goes back to Uhland for the ex tra 1 yard and gets an other 6 put on the board with the fresh man touch down. Primero fi nally gets a block on the PAT. Eads was n t play ing nice in Primero s back - yard as Rouse and Mitchek get in on a QB sack and Winder with a host of Ea gles get an - other sack and two in - com plete passes later, Primero was hand ing the ball back over on downs. Adam Dorow scores Eads next touch down on his 6 yard scam per and big brother Nate puts in the ex tra two. Primero then had an im pres sive drive with a Lujan to Trujillo, 53 yard pass but end ing on the Eads 3 yard line. With a flag for too many men on the field the clock runs out and Eads was lead ing at half, 62-12. Eads does re ceive the open ing kick off start ing the 2nd half and Primero again de cides to do an onside kick but it rolls back and does n t get the yard age needed so Eads was start ing their drive in Primero ter ri tory. It was a chain of fum bles for the rest of the 3rd quar ter as #44 Rhett Uhland finds open field. (Monica Uhland Photo) Eads is quilty of two and Primero coughs up one of their own. Primero scores an other touch down in the 4th quar ter as Lujan has plenty of time and finds Trujillo in the end zone and Eads also gets a rough ing the QB call which was en forced on the kick off. Ty ler Beaman kicks in the PAT. Eads has one more drive down the field with a 42 yard Rouse/Parker pass but fum bles again on a muffed pitch back. Bryce Batterton (#24) waits pa tiently on the play to be gin in the Primero vs. Eads game. (Honey Belle Dixon Photo) Primero then co mes up with a lit tle luck on their next touch down as Lujan passes to Jo nah Bol linger and what could have been called an in com plete pass was called a fum ble and Domenic Demelio picks the ball up on the 5 yard line and runs it in. Trent Mitchek blocks the PAT and times runs out. Eads will be tak ing on Peetz for the first round of the 6-man cham pi on ship bracket. Peetz up set Arickaree, 34-33 in the cross divisional game thus throw ing the bracket into a spin and when it stopped Stratton-Lib erty were sit ting in the #1 slot, Hi-Plains in the #2 and Eads in the #3 spot al low - ing them to play host to the Bull dogs, Sat ur day, No vem ber 2, at a 1:00 kick off. Cau - tion pe ri ods are in spring when pe ren nial grasses be gin growth or in the fall/win ter when grasses are ini ti at ing regrowth. The ger mi na tion and new growth of win ter an nual grasses are also a fac tor in the fall/win ter cau tion pe riod. Con sump tion of grasses hav ing low fi ber and high mois ture con - tent with low mag ne sium (Mg) lev els re sults in cat - tle having diminished Mg lev els in the blood. Mg is im por tant in many en zy - matic re ac tions in the body. Stress, ex treme weather, and for ages high in ni tro gen/crude pro tein and po tas sium can ex ac - er bate the Mg de fi ciency in the for age. Pas tures fertilized with ammonia or hav ing soils with high ni tro gen and po tas sium lev els can also in crease the risk of grass tetany in spring and fall/win ter. Lac tat ing cows have a greater risk for grass tetany. For ages hav ing more than 0.2% Mg, on a dry mat ter ba sis, are gen - er ally con sid ered safe. Acute cases of grass tetany can re sult in death within one hour of the on - set of symp toms. Symp - toms may de velop within a few hours. An i mals suf - fer ing from acute poi son - ing may show symp toms prior to death in clud ing excitability, aggressive - ness, ab nor mal walk, vo - calization, convulsions, and froth ing at the mouth. Cheatgrass and Jap a - nese brome were pro lific this sum mer, but now a mul ti tude of seeds from those par ent plants are emerg ing. These newly emerg ing plants stand a high chance of sur viv ing the win ter. The one good as pect of this mass of new growth is that it can po - tentially provide forage for cat tle through the spring. If your cat tle are graz ing cheatgrass this fall or spring, be ware of grass tetany. How ever, if these new stands of cheatgrass are not suf fi - ciently grazed or con - trolled by early this next spring, we could be look - ing at re cord num bers of cheatgrass that could be com pet ing for wa ter, nu - tri ents, and space with de sir able pe ren nial grasses. They want to do more pub lic out reach. They would like to have a part time per - son, two hours a week, to help keep ev ery thing on track, if the bud get can sup port it. The Com mis - sion ers said they would take this un der ad vise - ment and see how the budget was going to look for next year. DEM Nancy McCain met with the Com mis - sion ers re gard ing pos si - ble re im burse ment for flood dam ages. She stated that the County must in form the State about flood dam ages. Oswald stated that the County would not qual ify for re im burse ment, as the amount of dam age would not ex ceed the to tal re quired. McCain also said the Emer gency Man - age ment Pro gram Grant in the amount of $61,712 with 50% match from the County needs to be signed. Oswald made the motion, seconded by Koehler, to sign the grant. The 1985 Chevy pickup at the Haswell Shop is for sale. The Commissioners will put a list of equip ment in the pa per for bids. Commissioner's - Con tin ued from page 11 There was dis cus sion re gard ing the gravel pits. The County is li a ble for ev ery thing in the pit. Who ever hauls from the pits will have to be in sured and must fol low all MSHW rules and reg u la - tions. Koehler feels that the County is tak ing the in cen tive out of a pri vate individual getting a gravel pit. They ve had a re quest to haul fill dirt to a con - struc tion site and Koehler told them the County would haul one load of gravel; any thing else needed to be hauled by an in de pend ent busi - ness. Any one haul ing from the County pits need to sign a doc u ment re - leas ing the County from any li a bil ity and the Com - mis sion ers feel that the busi ness haul ing should also have $500,000 li a bil - ity, $500,000 for ve hi cles and the min i mum work - man s comp that the State re quires. The Com mis - sion ers will con tinue to dis cuss this mat ter to have a policy in place by the end of November. Koehler made the mo - tion, sec onded by Oswald, to compensate Jack Howard $100 per month as in terim fore man for Dis trict 2, ret ro ac tive back to Sep tem ber 1st, until the Commissioners de cide how many road fore men they are go ing to have in the County. There was dis cus sion re gard ing equipment repairs. Jo Lynn Idler with Pub - lic Health and En vi ron - ment and Lori Gittings, RN/WIC Di rec tor, met with the Commissioners. The WIC pro gram was to ser vice Ki owa County the same as Prowers County. The fund ing was very low so they will not be able to come twice a month as they had hoped. They pre - sented three dif fer ent op - tion plans for ser vic ing WIC in Ki owa County. Op - tion 1: The cost for com - ing once a month for WIC clin ics is $5,002.56 and the state con tract is $2,350.00 (based on 10 cli ents). This leaves a short age of $2,652.56. There are now 25 cli ents (pre vi ously 12 KiowaCountyPress.com November 1, 2013 there were 10 cli ents) but no guar an tee that the State will in crease the con tract to re flect the in - crease in cli ents. Op tion 2: If they come ev ery other month, the to tal cost would be $2,496.48 for a dif fer ence of $146.48. Op tion 3: The third op tion would be ev ery other month, al ter nat ing the cov er age be tween Lori Gittings and Tammie Clark, for a sav ings of $703.84. Tammie s sal ary would come out of Pub lic Health in stead of WIC, thus the sav ings. No vem - ber 6th will be the first WIC Clinic from 9:00 to 3:00. Cli ents need to call Lori Gittings at 336-5454 to make an ap point ment. Af ter fur ther dis cus sion, Koehler made the mo tion, sec onded by Oswald, to go with the third op tion plan, com ing ev ery other month and alternating Lori and Tammie. All Commissioners voted affirmative. In di rect Cost Rate for Pub lic Health was dis - cussed. The Com mis sion - ers need to have the au di - tor ap ply for this. De struc tive Tree Pest De tected in Col o rado By Christi Lightcap An invasive insect re - spon si ble for the death or de cline of tens of mil lions of ash trees in 21 states has been de tected in Col - o rado for the first time. A sus pect tree was spot - ted in Boul der County on Sep tem ber 23rd by City of Boul der For estry staff. In - sect spec i mens from the ash tree were col lected and sent to the United States De part ment of Ag - riculture (USDA) Systematic Entomology Labora - tory where the iden tity of the insects was confirmed. The confirmation of these spec i mens as em - er ald ash borer (EAB) marks the west ern-most oc cur rence of this in va - sive pest in North Amer - ica, said Pat rick McPherren, USDA State Plant Health Di rec tor in Col o rado. To date Col o - rado is the fourth State to de tect EAB in 2013. The first step will be to de ter mine how wide - spread its pres ence is, said CDA s Plant In spec - tion Division Director, Mitch Yergert. We have a plan in place to quickly re - spond in or der to pro tect Col o rado s ash trees. Ad di tional steps will in - volve ini ti at ing a quar an - tine in the reg u lated area to pre vent the move ment of all ash tree prod ucts and hard wood fire wood. The Colorado Depart - ment of Agriculture will also ex pand ef forts to de - tect the de struc tive bug. CDA has been trap ping for EAB for five years; ad - di tional ef forts will now in clude bark in spec tions and tree sam pling. Of fi - cials will also step up education and outreach efforts. The em er ald ash borer (EAB) is a small, green me tal lic bee tle first de - tected in North Amer ica in 2002 in south east ern Mich i gan. The em er ald ash borer at tacks only Planning a trip? ash trees and all ash spe - cies in clud ing green, white, black and blue are at risk. Signs of em er - ald ash borer in fes ta tion in clude a gen eral de cline in the ap pear ance of the tree, thin ning of up per branches and twigs, loss of leaves, and ser pen tine tun nels pro duced by EAB lar vae un der the bark. Woodpeckers may often be ob served re mov ing the bark of infested trees to access the larvae. The pub lic can play a vi tal role in pre vent ing the spread of this de - struc tive bug by sim ply not mov ing fire wood, said Yergert. EAB lar vae can sur vive un der neath the bark of ash fire wood, and when it s moved from one place to an other, the pest can hitch hike to a new lo ca tion. Fur ther - more, it s im por tant to note that trees be gin to de cline a bit dur ing fall months but there are cer - tain fea tures of a EAB-in - fested tree that residents can look for. It is pos si ble that EAB could in fest an ash tree for 3 or 4 years be fore vis i - ble signs of de cline of the tree. If an ash tree is ex - pe ri enc ing die back or look ing un healthy, res i - dents are en cour aged to have it ex am ined by a pro - fes sional tree com pany, con tact CDA, or their city or county forestry office. If you think you have EAB in your ash trees, or if you have any ques tions or con cerns, or would like ad di tional in for ma tion, please con tact the Col o - rado De part ment of Ag ri - cul ture at 888-248-5535 or email CAPS.program@state.co.us.
