DIGGIN' SYDNEY VINYL LOVERS' TOUR GUIDE DIGGERS LEGEND: SECONDHAND VINYL LP/EP/45 NEW VINYL / CDs / DVDs BOOKS / MUSIC RELATED & MORE Touring record stores is a great way to see a city. This guide is put together with that in mind and uses Sydney s CBD as a starting point. You ll also find some useful transport tips under all the regional subheadings. For those shops further afield, overnighters may be in order, but hey, the promise of a crate at the end of the rainbow might just be enough to tip the scales in favour of an adventure! SYDNEY (CBD) We start in the middle of Sydney s CBD at Town Hall. Right behind the Queen Victoria Building you ll find Red Eye Records. From here you have two options: head North to Birdland and Mojo Record Bar. This will place you in the vicinity of Circular Quay, from where you can take ferries to all sorts of great places around greater Sydney, including the stunning journeys out to Parramatta s Beatdisc, and Manly s Desire. South from Town Hall you are just a stones throw from Utopia and Lawson s Records where you will find yourself in the bustling China, Korea, Japan and Thai Towns. Here you can feast mightily, buy worldly groceries, fashion, tech; you name it. EASTSIDE Just to the East of the CBD across Hyde Park is East Sydney. Indie, arty and chock full of creatives and great food. It s kinda like Sydney s Melbourne, except that the Inner West can also claim to have that excellent vibe (albeit further from city). A short walk across Hyde Park or the Domain, or under the viaducts from Haymarket gets you Eastside, where you ll find a 4km-long ridge of indie retail, food, drink, night spots and boutique hotels. The most obvious way to go Eastside is Oxford Street which starts at the South-East corner of Hyde Park. Just a couple of blocks up Oxford, turn right into Crown Street to get to the Record Store, TITLE Store and Suzie Q s in Surry Hills, or go a little further east along Oxford St and turn left on Darlinghurst Road (just after Taylor Square) to get you to Radio Free Alice. Cut one block further east to Victoria Street, which is a foodie s dream, and then head north to Grand Days which is just near the Coke sign in Kings Cross. NORTHERN SUBURBS Sydney s North is loosely divided by Middle Harbour into the North Shore and the

Northern Beaches. The Northern Beaches are a little tricky to get to seeing as how there is no train line and so a bus or ferry you ll have to take or the traffic you ll have to brave. This is, however, an excellent day trip and buses and ferry s are frequent; then again you could always book an overnight stay up that way because the Northern Beaches are one of Sydney s beautiful natural wonders with no shortage of food, beverages and a super-chill vibe. NEWTOWN Only a couple of train stops from the Sydney CBD and just beyond the University of Sydney is Newtown, the gateway to Sydney s Bohemian heart: the Inner West. Newtown s main drag, reet, has a fantastic cluster of record shops around the station you can walk in almost any direction and find yourself a vinyl retailer! The area is replete with antique, fashion and eccentric retail shops along with many, many food options. Revolve Records, while technically in Erskinville, it s so close to Newtown that it made sense to include it here. It s literally just around the corner from Egg Records which is just a stone s throw from the station. Also just north-ish of the station you ll find Hum Records. Heading south you ve got Something Else, Repressed Records, Classic Hi Fi and 567 King, leading you to the grittier end of Newtown. INNER WEST This is the home of RPM Records Posters Memorabilia, a mecca for music lovers, and Resist records, freshly re-located from Newtown. You find Sounds Espresso - a music-themed cafe nestled in among Marrickville s industrial area where more than a few small bars are popping up. OUTER SUBURBS & BEYOND Parramatta is often called Sydney s second CBD. You can catch a ferry up there from Circular Quay, or a train from Central. The place has a lot to offer in terms of culture, food, drink and shopping. The crew at Beatdisc can provide you with hot tips on how to spend a day locally. Our regional sisters and brothers are the farthest stores on the map and while not technically Sydney, we are all one big happy family and isn t it great to know that whether you re tripping to the Gong, Blue Mountains or Mudgee (the land of milk & honey & wine), Canberra our nation s capital or using the Windsor area as a base, you can have a quality dig out those ways too. THANKS This guide is a collaborative effort by all the indie record stores listed here and on our website. Assisted by Melbourne s Northside Records and Blisterfinger Design. Thanks to everyone who has supported Diggin Sydney Find us online: www.digginsydney.com
