Platteville Bus Expansion Project, Meeting #2, 2/19/15 Fare System - Payment Methods Below is a brief overview of common bus fare payment methods. We need to decide which we prefer. One or a combination of several? Cash (UW-P students show their ID s to ride free) Estimated Cost: No additional cost Pros: Simple, cost effective, everyone has access to cash. Cons: More work for Stratton, riders must carry cash, security concerns for drivers, tracking rides is burdensome, do we want a fare box on each bus? Punch card or Monthly Pass (UW-P students show their ID s to ride free) Estimated Cost: Minimal, cost of printing and managing sales. Pros: Simple, cost effective, quicker than using cash, more secure than cash. Cons: More work for Stratton, riders must advance purchase the card, tracking rides is burdensome, where will the cards be sold? Paper Unlimited Ride Pass (e.g. 20 rides per card) (UW-P students show their ID s to ride free) Estimated Cost: Minimal, cost of printing and managing sales. Pros: Simple, cost effective, quicker than using cash, more secure than cash, cards can be purchased as gifts. Cons: More work for Stratton, riders must advance purchase the card, tracking rides is burdensome, where will the cards be sold? Digital Unlimited Ride Pass (UW-P students swipe their ID s to ride free) Estimated Cost: $2,000 annual per bus plus $5,500 one time cost for new bus ($7,500 in 2015). Pros: Easy for riders, provides online real time bus routing and scheduling, quicker than using cash, more secure than cash, easy for Stratton staff to collect payment and track riders. Cons: Riders must advance purchase the card, need someone to pay for the system and someone to manage the system (e.g. troubleshoot with company, check and maintain ridership data, etc). Complete credit card / cash / ride card system (like in big cities) (UW-P students swipe their ID s to ride free) Estimated Cost: A company that specializes in bus payment systems (Trapeze) told us it would cost over $100,000. Pros: Easy & quick for riders, very secure, easy for Stratton staff to collect payment and track riders. Cons: Cost, Need someone to pay for the system and someone to manage the system (e.g. troubleshoot with company, check and maintain ridership data, etc).
