We encurage yu t read it carefully and keep it as a handy reference.

WELCOME TO CAMP YMCA KANAWANA! Nn nbis slum (Nt fr Ourselves Alne) Dear Kanawana Parent, We d like t take this pprtunity t thank yu fr chsing Camp YMCA Kanawana fr yur camper this summer. The YMCA is an rganizatin dedicated t prviding healthy, safe, and secure envirnments where children and yuth can learn new skills, develp self-cnfidence, and create memries that will last a lifetime. Kanawana is a place t make new friends and feel a sense f belnging; a place t discver the beauty f nature and the utdrs; a place t turn I can t t I did ; a place t be accepted fr wh yu are. While yur camper experiences the psitive envirnment where they will develp lasting relatinships with their peers and cunsellrs, we wuld like t develp ur relatinship with ur camp parents. We welcme yu t ask us questins and share yur feedback. We lk frward t welcming yur child t camp thank yu fr placing yur trust in us! Sincerely, The Kanawana Team Sean Day, Kate Taylr, Megan Hailstne, Kelsey Brenie-Sinclair and Yveline Jean-Charles

Our Missin The Y Missin The YMCAs f Québec missin is t build strnger cmmunities by prviding pprtunities fr everyne t lead fulfilling, active, healthy, and engaged lives. The Camp YMCA Kanawana Missin Camp YMCA Kanawana strives t create a camp cmmunity where everyne feels safe and valued; where everyne has a chance t grw; where ur actins and behaviurs are driven by ur cmmn YMCA values, including nn nbis slum (nt fr urselves alne); and where we care fr each ther and the envirnment. Our Values Inclusin T be a Kanawanian is t be part f a cmmunity that embraces diversity and welcmes all, regardless f cultural r sci-ecnmic backgrund, gender identity, r sexual rientatin. Our inclusin prgram als aims t create a safe and accessible envirnment fr children and yuth with different abilities and health needs, frm physical limitatins, t behaviural challenges, t struggles with mental well-being. Cllabratin In the spirit f ur camp mtt, nn nbis slum (nt fr urselves alne), Camp YMCA Kanawana campers learn t cperate with thers and take care f ne anther. We emphasize demcratic living and teamwrk in everything we d. Engagement Wrking t shape ur leaders f tmrrw, Camp YMCA Kanawana encurages campers t cnsider hw they can have an impact in their cmmunity and help create a better wrld fr themselves and fr thers. This takes n many frms, such as encuraging campers t make their wn daily schedule at camp, asking campers t help ut with chres arund camp, r getting campers invlved in fundraisers like the Sam Jam, which allws them t give back t the camp cmmunity and give mre underprivileged kids a chance t experience the magic f camp. Caring Camp YMCA Kanawana is all abut creating a better wrld by creating cnnectins with neself, with thers, and with nature. We strive t empwer ur campers t be caring and t learn hw t discnnect frm technlgy s they can recnnect with each ther. Excellence We draw n ur ver 120 years f summer camping t ffer the best pssible camping experience with a high level f prfessinalism. We als encurage ur campers t strive fr excellence by ffering them many pprtunities t build their skills thrugh camp activities. Respect Campers learn t shw respect and cnsideratin fr themselves, their peers, their cunsellrs and ther staff members as well as the camp s infrastructure and equipment, the frest and lake n which we live at camp, and the natural wrld n a mre glbal scale.

Preparing fr Camp Sleepaway Camp Tips It is very cmmn fr children f all ages, particularly first-time campers, t experience excitement, anticipatin, fear and nervusness prir t their departure t summer camp. All f these emtins are nrmal! In rder t best prepare yur child fr their experience away frm hme, here are a few tips frm Chris Thurber (psychlgist and summer camp expert) and the American Camping Assciatin, as well as frm ur wn experience: Talk t yur child abut what camp will be like. Wrk tgether t plan and pack fr their stay, and have a cuple f practice runs where yur child stays away frm hme fr a cuple f nights r lnger. As yu g thrugh the day-t-day f camp, figure ut what yur child is mst nervus abut, and discuss ways t vercme thse fears. Acknwledge, in a psitive way, that yu will miss yur child. Fr example, yu can say, "I am ging t miss yu, but I knw that yu will have a gd time at camp." When writing letters r emails while they re away, try t fcus n asking questins abut their time at camp rather than pinting ut what they might be missing at hme. Try t avid bribery r bargaining. Linking a successful stay at camp t a material bject sends the wrng message. The reward shuld be yur child's newfund cnfidence and independence. Avid making a pick-up deal, i.e. telling yur child that they can cme hme early if they miss hme r dn t like the experience. This undermines ur ability t help them adjust t camp life and sets their experience up fr failure. Please be assured that we will call yu if anything isn t ging well, and wrk with yu t cme up with the best slutin fr yur child! Pack a persnal item frm hme, such as a stuffed animal r a picture f yu, their friends, r their pets. Cme t ur Open Huse n Sunday June 17 (10:00 am 4:00 pm) t intrduce yur child t cunsellrs, ther campers and the envirnment they will be living in. Weather permitting, we will pen ur prgram areas and a meal will be ffered at a reasnable price. It has ften been ur experience that parents have a harder time with departures than children d. Try t remember that it s nly a shrt separatin and that yur child is in gd hands at camp. Shw yur child that yu are psitive, cnfident, and reassuring as yu drp them ff at the bus r at camp, s that the tne is set fr their stay. Fr mre details, please visit https://www.acacamps.rg/press-rm/hw-t-chse-camp/hmesickness Help Us Supprt Yur Child It is very imprtant that yu share with us any special needs that yur child may have i.e. ADD, ADHD, a mental r physical disability, fears (i.e. thunderstrms, the dark), bedwetting, r behaviural r scial difficulties. Please ensure t thrughly cmplete the medical prtin f the registratin frm, and if necessary, we recmmend yu send an email r speak with the Camp Directr r yur child s Sectin Directr prir t camp s we can prepare the best supprt fr yur child s needs. All infrmatin shared with us is held in the strictest f cnfidence and will nly be shared with staff as deemed apprpriate.

Packing Tips DON'T FORGET MEDICARE CARD & MEDICATION. Chsing the right luggage: pack items in a suitcase r duffle bag, as strage space is limited. Keeping czy: campers are required t prvide their wn sleeping bag and pillw. A three-seasn bag is recmmended, as nights d get cld, especially in August. (Please nte: if bedwetting is a cncern, please ensure yur child s sleeping bag is machine washable.) Avid digging thrugh the lst & fund muntain: LABEL EVERYTHING! Black sharpie r sticker labels wrk n almst everything! Reduce the risk f a mess: pack tiletries and ther liquids (bug spray, sunscreen) in Ziplc bags. Have it cme hme again: give yur child a packing list in rder t help them with re-packing. Yu can dwnlad ur suggested packing lists frm ur website under Imprtant Dcuments. Shamps, cnditiners and saps shuld be bidegradable (glycerine based & phsphate-free) and unscented (perfumed prducts attract black flies, msquites, etc.). Campers wh wear cntact lenses will need their glasses fr the cane trip and THEY SHOULD HAVE AN APPROPRIATE STRAP TO HOLD THEIR GLASSES WHILE ON THE WATER. What nt t bring FRAGILE ITEMS. Please keep in mind that camping and cane tripping are wilderness activities that can be strenuus n equipment. Brand new clthes. Children will be utdrs, playing hard and getting dirty! Revealing swimwear r clthing. A ne-piece, sprt bikini r tankini are mre apprpriate chices fr swim time. We suggest aviding strapless r tie-n swimwear, as they can easily fall ff when ding activities. Campers will be asked t wear a T- shirt r change shuld their swimwear r clthing be deemed inapprpriate. Hand-held vide games, MP3 players, cell phnes, laptps, and/r ther digital devices. These items will be cnfiscated, labelled and lcked in a safe until the last day f the camper s sessin. Hair dryers, straighteners, electric razrs r tthbrushes that need a plug: camper living spaces d nt have electricity, and we have t limit ur electricity use in the bathrms t avid pwer lss Jewellery, dangling earrings and stylish watches. They can cause injury and are easily lst r damaged. Cash. All campers have a tuck accunt (included in fees) and they may nly purchase items by using this accunt. Additinal mney can be added t tuck accunts if needed during registratin r by phning ur ffice. Cash will nt be accepted frm campers. Fd r snacks. Raccns, skunks, ants, squirrels and ther critters will g int tents/cabins lking fr fd if they smell it. Als, several campers have life-threatening fd allergies and many fllw special diets fr medical r religius reasns. Because f this, we ask that yu please refrain frm packing r sending yur child any fd items. Camp YMCA Kanawana will cnfiscate any fd items brught t camp. Knives. The camp can supply knives fr activities if/when deemed necessary. CIGARETTES r TOBACCO will be cnfiscated and a call will be made t parents. A secnd incident will result in the camper being sent hme. ALCOHOL/DRUGS. We have a ZERO TOLERANCE plicy fr campers using, r being in pssessin f alchl r drugs. Campers wh are fund with any f these items will be sent hme immediately. PLEASE NOTE: Camp YMCA Kanawana is nt respnsible fr stlen, lst r damaged prperty f any kind.

During Yur Child s Stay Laundry Campers registered fr nly ne six-day r twelve-day sessin d nt receive laundry services. Laundry service is included fr campers wh are registered fr the changever weekend between sessins. Please be sure t send yur child t camp with enugh clthing t last thrughut their stay, with apprpriate gear and clthing suited fr cane tripping, if registered fr a trip prgram. Lst & Fund Mre than 2,000 campers visit Camp YMCA Kanawana between May and Octber. Unfrtunately, clthing, shes, bts, hats, and ther items are ften left behind. In the summer, we end up with at least five large garbage bags full f lst items after each sessin. There are three things yu can d t increase the chances that yur child returns hme with what they brught t camp: Clearly label every item they bring with their first and last name with a printed label r Sharpie marker in an bvius lcatin. Pack yur child s bag with them present s they see what yu are packing. Prvide yur child with a checklist f packed items t use when they pack at the end f the sessin. Camp staff members d their best t cllect lst and fund items left arund camp thrughut the sessin. Labeled items tend t make their way back t campers quicker. On the last day f camp, every lst and fund item is laid ut in the dining hall and each cabin/tent grup has a chance t walk arund t claim their belngings. Any unclaimed items are brught t the bus drp-ff n Friday and the bus pick-up n Mnday fr parents and campers t lk thrugh. Camp YMCA Kanawana will nly keep lst and fund items fr ne week after the last day f the sessin. During this time, if yur child is missing smething, yu may email a descriptin f the item t camp.kanawana@ymcaquebec.rg. We will lk thrugh the lst and fund and if we find it, we will bring it back t the next bus drp-ff r pick-up fr yu t retrieve. After ne week, we will dnate the unclaimed lst and fund items t a wrthy charity. The nly exceptin will be shes, bts, raincats, and sleeping bags, which will be kept until the end f summer. Please nte that despite ur best effrts, we cannt guarantee that lst items will be fund. Camp YMCA Kanawana is nt respnsible fr lst, stlen, r damaged items.

Language & Behaviur Camp YMCA Kanawana is NOT a place fr inapprpriate language, vilence, bullying, being disruptive r disrespectful t staff and ther campers, etc. Cunsellrs and the Sectin Directr (and Camp Directr, if necessary) will address incidents with campers and parents will be ntified, as a first step. If there is n significant change in behaviur, the Camp Directr reserves the right t send a child hme. Please nte that participants wh are asked t leave fr behaviural issues will nt be reimbursed. Camper Behaviur Agreement Camp YMCA Kanawana is a cmmunity whse mtt is nn nbis slum (nt fr urselves alne), where respect fr ne anther and the envirnment is a cre value. We believe it is imprtant that all campers understand what is expected f them and what they are cmmitting t when they decide t becme part f the magic f Kanawana. We recmmend that yu take time t discuss the camper behaviur agreement with yur child t ensure they understand their cmmitment t the Kanawana cmmunity. I prmise t: Respect the natural envirnment that makes camp s beautiful. Treat all campers and staff with respect and curtesy. Use apprpriate language. Respect ther peple s belngings. Respect all safety regulatins implemented by Camp YMCA Kanawana staff members t ensure everyne s safety during activities n camp and n cane expeditins. Never use r pssess alchl, illegal substances, r tbacc during my stay at camp r during my cane trip expeditin. Cntribute my happiness, enthusiasm and humur Tuck Shp Every camper at Camp YMCA Kanawana will receive a reusable water bttle n their first day at camp, and will be sent hme with a T-shirt frm this seasn, and a pht print f their cabin/tent grup. The tuck fees required fr yur camper are autmatically added t yur invice when registering; part f the fees will cver the cst f thse three items, and the rest can be spent at the camp tuck shp during their stay. If yur child des nt use all f the tuck mney available, a refund may be issued fr amunts ver $10. In rder t receive this refund, yu must send a written request within ne week fllwing yur child s stay at camp. All remaining tuck mney remains within the YMCA, and ges twards prviding services t families with lwer incmes, including sending campers t Kanawana. Please nte that tuck refund cheques are nly issued after the summer, usually during the mnth f September.

Hw Can I Cntact My Child? Camp YMCA Kanawana is an unplugged envirnment, where we discurage the use f technlgy. As such, we ask that campers d nt bring their wn cellphnes. As a general rule, we als d nt permit campers t use the camp telephne, as it is reserved fr camp business and emergency purpses. All families f first-time campers will receive a phne call frm their child's sectin directr within the first few days f camp abut hw the campers are ding. If yu wish t speak with yur child's sectin directr, yu may call and leave a message. We will return yur call as sn as pssible. In terms f regular cntact, we d recmmend sending letters, pstcards, r (nn-fd) care packages by mail r sending an email thrugh the CampBrain email system. Cntacting My Child n a Cane Trip It is very imprtant t knw that it is nt pssible t cntact campers while they are n a trip. Our guides leave camp with emergency phnes and are able t cntact camp if necessary but the battery pwer is limited and guides are instructed t keep the phnes ff at all times, unless they are needed. If yu send yur child mail r emails during their stay, they will nly receive them befre r after their cane trip. Camper Mail Mail is distributed every day. Life at Camp YMCA Kanawana Supervisin Yur child s safety and well-being is ur tp pririty. We ensure yur child s safety 24 hurs a day. Our junir campers are in grups f up t 10 campers and are supervised by 2 cunsellrs. Senir campers are in grups f up t 8 and are supervised by 1 cunsellr. Campers als receive additinal supervisin frm prgram specialists during certain activities. There are specialists present at rck climbing, nature utings, arts & crafts, swimming (3-4 staff), bating (2 staff) and wd shp. All prgram specialists wh supervise the swim area are certified lifeguards, and sme f ur cunsellrs are as well. The ratis in residential camps are subject t regulatins gverned by the Assciatin des camps du Québec (A.C.Q.). The table belw is a cmparisn f the A.C.Q. standards and the standards we implement at Camp YMCA Kanawana. A.C.Q. Hwever, smetimes there are nt enugh campers f the same age t make up a whle grup. In additin, language prfiles, familial assciatins and cabin-mate requests have t be taken int cnsideratin. As a result, the age spread in a tent grup may range frm ne t three years. If yu wuld like t make a cabin-mate request n yur child s registratin, we ask that yu limit it t tw names. Please make sure that this is a mutual request and that bth campers are registered in the same prgram. We cannt guarantee that the request will be fulfilled. We encurage new and returning campers t make new friends during their stay, and the easiest way t d this is t have them in cabins/tents with new faces each summer!

Camp Activities & Prgrams Campers participate in a wide range f activities at Kanawana with their cabin r tent grup and als with their sectin and the entire camp. Prgrams are planned by the cunsellrs, sectin directrs and prgram staff. Furthermre, campers have the pprtunity t select 2 t 4 interest grup activities (spaces limited per activity) during their sessin. Interest grups allw campers t chse activities based n their interests and t meet different grups f campers ther than thse in their cabin/tent grup. Sme interest grups feature different levels; campers wh successfully cmplete these levels will receive an in-huse certificatin. Other interest grups are simply an utlet fr creativity. In all f ur prgrams and activities at Kanawana, we emphasize the imprtance f participatin, fun, cperatin, and skill develpment. Camp activities may include swimming lessns, caneing, kayaking, paddlebarding, archery, arts and crafts, nature activities, rck climbing, lw rpes curse, music, dance, athletics, yga, and mre. Sme f the special prgrams at camp include Cffee/Cca Huse (talent shws), flklre night, campfires, Dancing with the Staff, Kanawdstck, vernights, and the Lumbermen & Vyageurs games. Health & Well-Being Camp maintains a five-bed infirmary, which is supervised by tw healthcare staff. All health frms, medicatins and Medicare cards are kept in the infirmary during yur child s camp sessin. The infirmary staff relay pertinent health-related infrmatin t cunsellrs, trip guides, and sectin directrs n a need-t-knw basis. Please nte that health frms, Medicare cards, and medicatin are given t guides and accmpany the grup n cane trips. If yur child must cntinue take prescribed medicatin while at camp, please give the bttles, intments etc. t the camp s healthcare staff at the bus r n-site check-in. Please ensure that yur child has enugh medicatin t last the whle sessin(s) and that it is clearly marked. At the end f the sessin, medicatin will be included in the camper s persnalized envelpes available at the bus r the main ffice at camp. All medicatin, prescribed r therwise, is kept at the infirmary in a lcked cabinet at all times. Only under special circumstances (e.g. inhalers and Epi-pens) are campers permitted t keep their medicatin with them. The healthcare staff r Camp Directr/Assistant Directr will call yu in the fllwing circumstances: Yur child requires a visit t the clinic r the hspital.
