April, September and October are ideal months to take on this challenge, outside of the very hot summer period. Due to the desert climate, the days will be hot, with an average temperature of 25 C, but at night temperatures can drop to a much cooler 5 to 10 C.
itinerary DAY 1 - Depart London We depart London on our flight to Las Vegas. On arrival, we are met by our local team and transfer 30 minutes to our Bolder City hotel to enjoy a welcome dinner together. Meals: D Accom: Hotel DAY 2 - Village This morning we transfer 4½ hours along Route 66 all the way to Village on the South Rim of the. We will be staying close to the village. After lunch we have an orientation meeting, where we will be briefed on the challenge ahead and ensure that everyone is completely prepared. We start with a trek approximately 10km out along the south rim trail that without a doubt gives some of the most spectacular views of the Canyon. It s an incredible place to be and on a clear day, as the sun starts to set and the beautiful colours of the canyon are lit up, there are few other more astonishing views in the US! Meals: B,L,D Accom: Lodge / Camping Distance: 10 km DAY 3 - The Bright Angel Trail The Bright Angel Trail that descends all the way into the canyon, is often grouped amongst the top trails of the world. It is a tough days walk as it starts at 2093m and is a virtually constant day descent to 756m. As we descend, the temperatures become increasingly hotter and of the 4 official stops along the way, three have much needed water refill points. By the time we have descended to Indian Garden the trail has started to flatten out. We have lunch here with views over the Colorado River before our return to our Lodge. The canyon is the home to the Havasupai, although today they have a more comfortable existence further to the west. Meals: B,L,D Accom: Lodge / Campning Distance: 16 km DAY 4 - South Kaibab Trail This is yet another of the world famous treks of the. We make our way to the trailhead of The South Kaibab Trail for a really tough but stunning trek that should push everyone hard. We descend the trail past the aptly named Ooh-Aah Point, then Cedar Point and stop at Skeleton Point. Both these trails offer completely different views of the Grand Canyon and are amazing in their own right. On our return to the trailhead our transfer vehicle will be waiting to take us to Zion National Park. Today we end our journey in Springdale in our comfortable accommodation. Meals: B,L,D Accom: Lodge / Camping Distance: 10 km Breakfasts each morning will be in camp. Lunches will be en route and evening meals will be freshly prepared in camp in time for your arrival. In Las Vegas all meals will be at the hotel or a local restaurant, except in free time. All meals are full of carbohydrates, protein and nutrients to keep us well fuelled for our hikes. DAY 5 - Zion National Park Zion National Park has some of the most iconic images in the US and is on most people s must visit list. Our trail is to the best viewing point in Zion NP which is aptly named Observation Point! Another good tough trek and once there we have our lunch amongst the magnificent and unique scenery of the park. We return to our lodging tonight in the small town of Springdale in the centre of Zion National Park. Meals: B,L,D Accom: Lodge / Camping Distance: 15 km DAY 6 - The Narrows For the last day of our amazing challenge we trek to and through the main attraction in Zion National Park. The Narrows are the beautiful deep and narrow gorges of sandstone whose rich yellow, orange and red colours appear on so many famous photographs. The trail through some of the sections of Zion Canyon involves wading in the Virgin River. When we finally come to our trailhead we make the transfer back to our Vegas hotel and tonight we will mark our achievements with a Vegas-style celebratory dinner! Tonight Vegas is ours to explore and enjoy. A kit list will be sent to you on receipt of registration. Many everyday items can be used on this challenge, and we offer a kit hire service to keep costs down. Full details are on our website. 1) SELF FUNDED For anyone who wants to pay for the entire trip themselves. It s then completely up to you whether or not you choose to raise any money for a charity of your choice. ATOL is a scheme that protects you from losing money or being stranded abroad if your travel company collapses. Action Challenge is 100% ATOL bonded, which provides you with full financial protection. On receipt of your registration fee, you will receive an ATOL certificate explaining your protection. All fundraising goes directly to your charity and providing that you raise at least 4,100 for Sep 2018, your charity will pay for the balance of your trip costs to Action Challenge. You will have to pay any airline fuel surcharges 10 weeks prior to departure. 3) MIXED FUNDED A mix of the 2 options above! You pay about half the trip cost yourself, and also fundraise for your charity. They pay the remaining balance of your trip costs.
