Clean Ups scheduled for coming weeks: Note: Don t forget to put these types of events on the Community Events Calendar in Public Folders. It is set up so ANYONE can put an event on the calendar. Friday, July 12th at 10 a.m., Harry Harris Park Subdivision. Please call Captain Fanelli if you plan to participate. Saturday, July 13th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Coco Plum Beach in Marathon. Meet at the public entrance to the beach. Call Detective Deb Ryan at 305-797-0143 for details. Saturday, July 27th from 8:30-10:30 a.m. between Murray Marine and the Key Haven Boat Ramp on Stock Island. Call Captain Gene Thompson with any questions at 305-745-3184. Explorers do well at Delegates event Sheriff s Office Explorers traveled to Port St. Lucie to compete and to learn at this year s Explorer Delegates Conference. Advisor/SRO Deputy Will Schlegelmilch and Deputy Dahlgren Marks went along as chaperones for the team of 23 Explorers who attended. Competing in firearms, Explorer Thomas Mirabella was in the Sharpshooter classification with a score of 409 out of possible 500 and Boy Scouts camping on Munson Island (27mm oceanside) found a military marker flare and called for help placed 3rd in 38 caliber revolvers. Askins who assisted with Drill team training. In the PAT test, Cindy Zaldivar had the fastest girls score with a 4:26 time and Amberlyn Casas had the second fastest time of 4:38. Events such as this give our Explorers a great idea of at what they have to look forward to with a law enforcement career. All of those who participate also appreciate all the support they get from the Monroe County Sheriff s Office. Thanks goes out to Deputy Marks for his hard work during the week. He had a huge impact with the kids. He went above and beyond in participating in all of the training, and working with other counties. Deputy Schlegelmilch said he got many comments praising Deputy Marks and his participation.

A group of corrections employees got together for a clean up at Newman Methodist Church in Key West. Lt. Nancy Alvarez and others from the Sheriff s Office participated in the annual Rotary Club of Key Largo Rotary clean up between the 105 and 106 mile markers of the highway. Members of the Sheriff s Office feeding people in need at Independence Cay in Marathon last week. Inmates went out twice last week, cleaning up the highway picking up trash and debris. SmartCop will be down Wednesday On Wednesday July 10th at 9:30 a.m. all SmartCop applications will be down for approx 3 hours for the quarterly update.. Release notes are in the SmartCop public folder.. Weekly Rap Up - Page 2 On the left, Lower Keys deputies and detectives cleaned up an area by the Boca Chica Bridge, adjacent to the bicycle path where campers and homeless folks left their trash and debris. Thanks to Community Partner Waste Management and Greg Sullivan for their help, and for the help from the Corrections Bureau - they provided inmate workers to assist with the project.

The Hamilton family enjoyed the Great Outdoors on the west coast recently on a family vacation. Next time you see him, ask Henry about the joys of tentless camping with a family of five. Lt. Mitch Horn was in the Upper Keys fourth of July parade last week, along with this beauty, which was trying to hitch a ride in his patrol car. Out with the old and in with the new... Members of the Sheriff s Office attended a retirement ceremony for Chief William Wagner in Islamorada, and also welcomed a new fire chief to the village - Terry Abel, a long time member of the Islamorada Fire Department. In the morning they reviewed some cases from Fort Lauderdale, and in the afternoon completed a mock negotiation.
