The naturalistic setting embodies many of the Chinese concepts of harmony and tranquility. Stroll the winding walkways, and enjoy the essential elements of this exquisitely arranged landscape of plants, water, stone, and architectural features. The Pagoda, a gift from Taiwan with Chinese architectural detail and ornamentation, was completed in 1989 at Freemason Harbor on a site recognized in the 1880 s as an integral part of a thriving commercial port. In 2000, the Friends of Pagoda and Oriental Garden Foundation, in partnership with the City of Norfolk, created a unique oasis at the Pagoda which honors trade relations and continues the port legacy. Next, visit old St. Paul s Church, Norfolk s oldest standing building, established in 1637. It was the only structure that survived the famous bombardment of Norfolk during the Revolutionary War in 1776 and today a cannonball still remains lodged in its Colonial brick exterior.
