THE CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT OF SUMMERLAND DELEGATION DATE: May 10, 2017 TO: Linda Tynan, Chief Administrative Officer FROM: Tricia Mayea, Manager of Legislative Services SUBJECT: The Trail of the Okanagans Society Wayfinding project STAFF RECOMMENDATION: That Council pass the following resolution: THAT the presentation from The Trail of the Okanagans Society regarding Wayfinding be received for information. BACKGROUND and DISCUSSION: Henry Sielmann from The Trail of the Okanagans Society will be introducing a wayfinding project they are working on. They have partnered with the RDOS, the Summerland Chamber of Commerce and the Thompson-Okanagan Tourist Association to launch a pilot project in Summerland for an innovative way of connecting major hiking/cycling trail heads with the downtown. OPTIONS: 1. Move the motion as recommended by staff. 2. Refer back to staff for other options. Respectfully Submitted Approved for Agenda Tricia Mayea Manager of Legislative Services Linda Tynan, CAO 3.1 The Trail of the Okanagans Society Page 2 of 21

3.1 The Trail of the Okanagans Society Page 6 of 21 Introducing our Way-Finding Project Located at the intersection of the TCT and the Trail of the Okanagans, Summerland has the potential to become a major cycling hub. Unfortunately cyclists cannot find their way to trailheads, businesses and facilities. We have formed a working group with TOTA, RDOS and the Summerland Chamber to define, procure and implement a cyclist way-finding infrastructure comprising markers (electronic beacons and/or signs) at a downtown location and at major trail heads. An interesting pilot for the TOTA region that helps promote Summerland as a cycling destination.

3.1 The Trail of the Okanagans Society Page 9 of 21 Trail Heads and Info Kiosks Beacons send information to smart phones Markers inform the user of the installed beacon and how to access it.

3.1 The Trail of the Okanagans Society Page 10 of 21 Two phases: Phase 1 this year: install map, markers and beacons. Provide basic way-finding functionality. Phase 2 next year: develop smart phone app under TOTA s leadership and regional funding. Consistent design across TOTA territory Information about trails, history, geography Opportunity for commercial use (wineries etc.) Note: Peachland Chamber will purchase beacons this year and make them available to interested businesses.

3.1 The Trail of the Okanagans Society Page 11 of 21 Our request for today: Help find and prepare the downtown hub location, library preferred. Provide and install frame for map. Provide and install posts for beacons. Name a contact for ongoing coordination with Infrastructure and Downtown Neighbourhood Plans.
