LOCATIONS The Glenelg River is the main feature of the Lower Glenelg National Park. The river is a fantastic spot for flat water canoeing and motor boating. The river is dotted with numerous campsites allowing recreational users to observe wildlife and enjoy the natural environment. The park is also home to the Great South West which was established in 1981. It is a 250km walk that loops through Portland and Nelson offering spectacular views of the South West coast. ACTIVITIES BUSHWALKING Students will be issued a pack and will share out the group equipment of tents, mats and food. They will then be instructed on the correct technique of packing, fitting and carrying a backpack. Having studied the map and selected the route the group will move off on their overnight journey. Stopping at regular intervals to ensure the group stays together students will use their newly acquired navigation skills to make it to the camp site. Each night they will set up tents and enjoy a cooked meal on their stoves before heading off on the next leg of the journey the following day. CANOEING In order to embark on their canoe journey, students will be given a safety brief and demonstration of how to steer their water craft on land, before they launch onto the water. They will also be given instruction on how to effectively waterproof their packs. After this they will be fitted with the necessary safety equipment and head off on their journey along the Glenelg River to camp. Page 6 of 7
