Mt Meru Climb Details At 4566m, Mount Meru is fifth highest mountain on the African continent and the second highest in Tanzania. The Mt Meru ascent passes through many different vegetation zones. The dry forest on the lower region gives way to a dense mountain rain forest, which then turns into a scrub-land. Towards the top of mountain, the vegetation consists of heath and moorland and is then finally replaced by the stunning boron alpine deserts with stunning views of a dormant volcano. As the vegetation changes the wildlife does so too, which is diverse and equally impressive. During the ascent, you will regularly come across large game such as buffalos, bush buck, red duiker and if you are very lucky elephant. It is one of the most under rated hikes in East Africa. 1. Momela gate 1500m.-Miriakamba hut 2500m. In the morning, you will be driven to the Momela gate where your guide will complete the obligatory entry forms and the porters luggage will be arranged. Once the formalities have been completed you will start your hike and get a first glimpse of the wonderful giraffe and buffalo. We will follow the southern route via fig tree arch, then reach Maio falls and on up stopping for a picnic half way. After 4-5 hrs you will reach the Miriakamba hut for hot drinks and snacks followed by an evening meal and overnight. Miriakamba Hut has flushing toilets and running water plus a cold shower if you dare! The huts sleep 4 people in 2 bunk beds. 2. Miriakamba 2500m -Saddle hut 3500m. Today we hike through the mountain rain forest and after 4 hours reachsaddle Hut for lunch in the alpine desert zone. In the afternoon you can walk to the summit of Little Meru which has stunning views and is a beautiful walk. Little Meru 3820m and takes around 45 minutes to summit. You return to Saddle Hut for dinner and overnight. Saddle Hut is more basic than Miriakamba Hut. The rooms are the same but there is limited running water and long drop toilets. Hot water will be provided by your guide for washing. 3. Saddle hut 3500m - Meru summit 4566m. Today we rise early (leaving around 1am) to start our long summit hike. Passing Rhino Point we continue to the summit for sunrise. On a clear day you can get fantastic views of Kilimanjaro, but even without this the views are breathtaking. You can clearly see the sheer cliffs of the crater as they dramatically fall 1000 feet or more. After many photos we head back down for brunch at Saddle Hut. After a short rest, we continue down to Miriakamba hut for dinner and overnight. 4. Miriakamba hut - Momella gate. Today we carry on downwards and back to the vehicles at Momella gate. This is roughly 3-4 hours and you have a good opportunity to view and observe the wildlife. We will then be transported back to the Manangu Hotel to celebrate our 1 st climb. We will try to stop in Moshi for souvenir shopping if time permits. Kilimanjaro_2017_AT Detailed_Trip Itinerary_and_Info Page 7 2/23/2016

Rongai Route Climb Details 1: Nalemuru gate to Simba camp. Vehicles take climbers to the gate at 2,200 metres at the entrance to the forest on the north eastern side of the mountain. This is a journey of a little over an hour from Marangu. From here, a 3 to 4 hour walk, gradually ascending through the forest to the camp which is just clear of the forest at 2,600 metres. 2: Simba camp to Kikelewa camp. The path ascends on a good path through Alpine moorland, similar to what is found on the Marangu route, to Second Cave at 3500 metres. After a lunch stop here, the path forks left towards Mawenzi. After another 3 hours on a rocky path, Kikelewa Cave is reached at 3690 metres. Total time is about 6-7 hours. This is really quite a long day, although most of the altitude gain is achieved in the first half of the day. 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn. The path climbs up a steep ridge directly towards Mawenzi. At the top of the ridge, the path turns left and traverses across rocky landscape and then descends into the Tarn Valley where camp is made at 4320 metres. The distance covered is only about 5 kilometres but this usually takes about 3 to 4 hours because of the steepness and altitude. 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut. Climbers retrace their path of the previous day for a short distance, and then descend to the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. There follows a 6 kilometre walk across the gradually ascending high altitude desert to Kibo Hut. Camp is made close to the hut at 4700 metres. Total time is about 5 to 6 hours. 5: Kibo Hut to Summit, then descent to Horombo Hut. Climbers are woken at about 11pm. After dressing in all their warm clothing, they have a hot drink and then set off at midnight. The first part of the ascent to the Hans Meyer cave is quite indirect, going around large rock outcrops and it is not as steep as the latter part. The surface is loose and can be hard going. After the cave the scree slope becomes extremely steep and you have to climb in a zig-zag fashion. It takes an average of 6 hours to reach Gillman's Point on the crater rim. On a fine morning, the views of the sun rising from behind Mawenzi are spectacular. Gillman's Point is at 5,700 metres. From here, the path goes around the crater rim for a further one and a half to two hours to the Kilimanjaro_2017_AT Detailed_Trip Itinerary_and_Info Page 11 2/23/2016
summit at Uhuru Peak, 5896 metres. The descent back to Kibo Hut can take a further 3 or 4 hours. After a rest and a meal, the descent continues to Horombo Hut via the lower route, a further trek of around 3 hours. 6: Horombo Hut to the Park Gate. The descent from Horombo to Mandara Hut takes around 3 hours, and the final part of the descent through the forest to Marangu Gate takes another 2 hours. At the Gate vehicles will be waiting to take you and your crew back to the hotel. Back at the Marangu Hotel, we will have ~1 hour to clean up before the closing ceremony with our guides, cooks and porters where we receive our summit certificates and celebrate. Be ready to party after 2 great climbs!! Kilimanjaro_2017_AT Detailed_Trip Itinerary_and_Info Page 12 2/23/2016
