Page 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Lewis and Clark history nuts (otherwise often referred to as Clarkies ) are fortunate to call the inland Northwest home. What brings this to mind is the first goal for this year s annual meeting: A truly memorable experience for all participants that captures the magic of being on-the-ground amongst the greatest number and least disturbed of L&C sites in the nation. The contrast with other areas of the country becomes evident when I compare annual meetings I ve attended. Most meetings are held in a conventional hall with academic presentations. This summer s meeting will be mostly on tour visiting some of the super L&C sites. Being a L&C nut here in the inland empire is more than just local sites. Check out the adjacent chapter web sites and newsletters at the National Web site: lewisandclark.org. The Travelers Rest Chapter holds monthly meetings with really good presentations. The Oregon and Washington Chapters hold frequent meetings and presentations at various communities along the Columbia River. Since I travel to those places often it is possible to attend one of their gatherings. For example on Feb 20 there will be three presentations at L&C College in Portland, OR. We have been blessed with a great team in developing the annual meeting (which has consumed me for nearly a year). People have come forward with some great ideas and with some methods to make their ideas work. Early we agreed to hold the meeting size to 300 or less due mainly to bus logistics. But, still we were planning on taking the whole group to a L&C sites and making a presentation. Several team members pointed out (rather forcefully) that you can t give a good hands-on presentation to a group of 300. Consequently, we have spent many hours working out bus schedules and presentation schedules to allow for smaller presentations. I hope you can join us for this summer s annual meeting. If you ve not attended annual meeting before this one will be special in several ways. Winter 2010 IDAHO CHAPTER NEWSLETTER We are teaming with the Nez Perce Tribe to tell the rest of the story. L&C & company kept good journals, but they often were not aware of the tribal activity going on around them. Joining us at each stop will be tribal members who will explain what was going on in the Nez Perce world while the Corps was here. We will be needing lots of help with the check in table, as bus guides and other chores needed when putting on a national meeting Consider also taking a week to visit the Lolo Trail. In past years the Chapter has organized several trips over the trail. Some years we spent a whole week, some just a weekend. The major barrier to overcome on those trips was the logistics of eating, sleeping and traveling over the trail. The Lolo Trail work partly helps solve the eating portion at least. You will also go home with a feeling of accomplishment. It s one way to make a commitment to history and to what we value in our world instead of paying taxes to have someone else do the work for us. Looking back we had a great deal of excitement and L&C activity during the Bicentennial years. It was a great way to get into a subject in depth and many people did that while focusing on special subjects such as the medicine of the era, or design and construction of their clothing, weapons and their desks. With the departure of the bicentennial national media attention has gone elsewhere. To borrow a phrase from our national heritage, the sunshine groupies have gone. Without the fast buck artists and the media seekers we have time to really learn and to understand. To that end I d like to hear what you think the Chapter be doing over the next few years. Do you want more trips following the trail, more presentations in various parts of the state, or just an occasional newsletter? After this summer s annual meeting and the Lolo Trail work party I expect to be in decompression mode and will be wondering where we go next. Odd number years are election years for our chapter officers, so a year from now it will be time to think about what we want our chapter to accomplish in future years. I think some of our officers are getting tired and some fresh ideas and fresh blood are warranted.

Idaho chapter newsletter Winter 2010 Page 3 ENJOY THE ANNUAL MEETING Each year the LCTHF holds its annual meeting somewhere along the trail. It is typically a four day event with both optional pre and post meeting trips. Each meeting has a different element of the Lewis and Clark experience to display. This year the Idaho Chapter is the host and our goal is to take everyone to many L&C sites in our area. We open Sunday, Aug 1 with a social and some dramatic presentations. The opening will be by the Nez Perce Drummers and Honor Guard, followed by Keynote Addresses. We will be exposed to two presentations at each site we visit, one by a L&C buff and one by a Nez Perce who will explain the background of what was occurring in the Nez Perce world with the Corps was at that location. On Monday we will get and overview of Nez Perce Country from the top of Lewiston Hill, learn about the Corps and the Tribe on the Clearwater and Lewis (Snake) Rivers, and view the incredible camp site near Dayton, WA that does the best job of displaying what the traveling Corps really looked like. On Tuesday we must choose between a short day of 12 hours along the Clearwater River looking at 1806 sites and learning about primitive skills, or a long day of 14 hours visiting the Lolo Trail, Weippe and mainly and mainly 1805 sites. On Wednesday we will visit the National Park Service site at Spalding and spend time at many different presentations including the Appaloosa Horse, Nez Perce food, shooting the air gun and more. That night we will return to the Event Center for the final social, book signing, dinner and banquet speaker. The meeting will be held at the Event Center of the Nez Perce Tribe s Clearwater River Casino. They are reserving rooms for us at $89 per night and the overflow can stay at the Red Lion, 5 miles away at the same price. The Red Lion will run a shuttle service between the two hotels. The Casino Hotel also has an RV park adjacent to the hotel CHAPTER OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Chuck Raddon, 1264 Shriver Road, Orofino, Idaho 83544, (208) 476-3123, idahoclarkie@gmail.com VICE PRESIDENT: Larry Jones, Boise, Idaho, (208) 362-0908 SECRETARY: Janie Gottschalk, 1922 Shay Hill Road, St. Maries, Idaho, 83861 (505) 379-7796, TREASURER: Holly Crawley, 7325 S. 5 th St., Idaho Falls, ID 83404, (208) 552-1639, holly@crawley.myrf.net

Page 4 Winter 2010 IDAHO CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Lolo Trail Work after annual meeting. You are invited to join us for a weeklong camping trip held on the scenic ridge followed by Lewis and Clark across the Bitterroot Mountains. We ll work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we ll tour on Tuesday and Thursday. It all starts Sunday, August 8 when we gather in Orofino and travel to our camp site near Sprit Revival Ridge. Your cost is $50 per person; the Idaho L&C license plate fund pays the rest. You will need to provide your own tent and sleeping gear. Brush clearing was a major part of the job. Fortunately, you can see the results so we felt good going back to camp tired. The Idaho Governor s Lewis and Clark Committee will provide the food, and the Clearwater National Forest will provide tools. Last year we cleared brush from 8 miles of trail, repaired and painted several of the interpretive signs and campground toilets. We anticipate much the same kind of work this year. Last year s crew averaged about 60 years in age and several were in their 70s. We have 14 returning from last year s crew. Our limit is 20 works, so we only have room for 6 more workers; first come, first served. There are a lot more details. For more information email our coordinator at lolotrail2010@gmail.com and she will send you the full story.
