Motor City Beemers Club Newsletter BMW MOA Club #231 BMW RA Club #209 October 2008 Volume 16, Number 10 Next Meeting; Saturday, October 4, 2008, 10:30AM @ BMW of Detroit Web site: www.bizblvd.net/mcbeemers THE PREZ SEZ President John Saarinen - Jsaarinen@peoplepc.com Vice President Peter Payton - rockmanpete@yahoo.com 2nd Vice President - George Yosin - 3 rd Vice President Ken Mitchell, kpsacone@comcast.net Treasurer Sharon Saarinen- sssaarinen@peoplepc.com Newsletter Editor John Hooper, jvhooper@comcast.net Web Master - Ives R. Potrafka, ives@bizblvd.net I sat down today to think about what I was going to write for my Prez Sez and decided to watch a TV show on assembly of the BMW Z4 in Spartenburg, S.C.. When they came to the part where they assembled the BMW roundel side light to the car they cut to a BMW executive. He started to explain that for years BMW management and marketing people thought the roundal represented a spinning propeller from their days of making aircraft engines. He said that recently they found out it is not a spinning propeller, but celebrates their Bavarian heritage. The blue and white are colors from the Bavarian flag. The roundal is just a circular section of the common blue and white check banners you see in Bavaria. Kind of took the mystique out of the emblem for me. That aside, it is still the symbol of a great motorcycle that I enjoy riding and that has given me the opportunity to travel to far away places that I only dreamed about when I first started riding back in the late 60's. No one back then expected a motorcycle to go 100,000 plus miles on one bike without rebuilding it. Our bikes are now capable of 200,000, 300,000 miles or more without engine repairs. Even though the mystique of the emblem for me is gone, I am still very happy and proud to ride one of the best motorcycles in the world. There isn't much time left in the season. Get out and do some riding! We have some great rides planned for October. Come on out and join in! Ride Safe, John Saarinen 1

MOTOR CITY BEEMER PICNIC SEPTEMBER 13, 2008 The picnic was a big success despite the weather. We had 31 attendees. I want to thank Rhys Blair, Sharon Saarinen, Ken Mitchell, and George Yosin for planning the picnic. I also want to thank Jerry Pokorski and Jim Baltista for coming early and helping to set up the tarps that acted as rain breaks. I may have missed someone in the rush to stop the rain from drowning the charcoal in the grill so I will apologize to anyone I missed. Dave McFall and Jim Baltista were the only ones to brave the rain and brought their bikes. Rhys was our grill meister and did his usual fantastic job of grilling the steaks and taught me a lot about grilling. For those of you that missed this years picnic I will say that the dishes brought to pass were particularly good this year. The deserts leaned heavily towards chocolate...and they were great! OFFICERS FOR 2009: It's that time of year when we ask for nominees for officers of our club. We would like to nominate candidates at our November meeting. If we have more than one person interested in a position we can have elections in December. These positions will take effect at the January meeting. Please consider filling one of these positions. We believe that having new people will bring fresh ideas to our club and make it more fun for everyone. We currently have the following positions: President - chairs our monthly meetings, calls officers meetings, arrangers for speakers or programs (winter meetings), helps coordinate club activities, writes Prez Sez for Newsletter and is signer on checking account. First Vice President - brings or arranges for donuts at monthly meetings, helps arrange winter programs or speakers at monthly meetings, and acts as back up to president to chair monthly meetings. Second Vice President - Arranges club picnic in September and Frankenmuth chicken dinner in June. Third Vice President - Gets volunteers to lead monthly rides, organizes off meeting rides (day and extended), and updates ride schedule for our web site. Treasurer - Handless all club finances which include: signer on checking account, maintains Excel spread sheet showing cash flow, 50/50 raffle money, collects dues, maintains updated membership list, and sends invites for new members to join e-group mail list. Newsletter Editor - publishes newsletter every month using Word and submits PDF formatted to Ives Potrafka for posting on our web site. 2

October 4th LUNCH RIDE Jerry Pokorski will be leading the Lunch ride at the Club s October 4th Meeting. This ride is a swap with the September scheduled Lunch Ride. If you enjoy watching beautiful old places, restored and turned into a productive business. Clare's of Lansing is a must see. The owner took what was left of an old train station and built what is now a fine dining area. Just blocks away from the State Capitol Building, Clare's offers a rustic atmosphere filled with ambiance of train travel days of old. The soft lighting takes you back in time. The hard wood floors with all of their unique squeaks and crackling offers a feeling of history. Also, the food is excellent! Check Clare s out on their web site at : http://www.claras.com/10_99updates/cls10_99.html Jerry was the Ride Captain of an earlier ride this year and selected an absolutely great route! This Ride promises to be just as good, if not better!! Annual Color Tour October 18-19 Wow! So far, we have 11 bikes and 13 people planning on making Color Tour 2008. Last year, there were just 2 of us. Eight men and 5 women will be enjoying all Michigan's North Country has to offer. At least 9 of the group are planning on staying at the Legs Inn cabins the 18th. A couple of our hearty women are planning on tenting next to the cabins. Come on with us and join in a beautiful late season weekend ride. We just need to talk Hoop into going along to ensure clear weather. I'll post the route I have planned in various GPS file formats so you can have a look see. If there is something you would like change, send me your suggestions and I'll see if I can work them in. At this point in the planning, we will have 2 departure rendezvous locations to avoid unnecessary travel. The first departure will be at 09:00 from the Park & Ride immediately across from the I-75 northbound Sashabaw Road (exit 89) exit ramp. There is a Culver's just to the north (right) of the exit ramp if you arrive early and would like a cuppa joe. The second rendezvous point will be at the northbound I-75 rest area just north of Flint (milepost 128). This location may be beneficial for those who live on the east or west sides of town and find I-69 or US 23 more convenient. If you choose to meet at the rest area, plan your departure from home so we can leave the rest area around 08:50. Please arrive just a bit early at the rendezvous points so we don't keep others waiting. The only planned en-route stop I have is at Wheeler's restaurant in Standish for breakfast. It should only be about an hour from I-75 rest area 128 to Wheelers. That should put us at Wheeler's around 10:00. 3

The above plan is subject to change as we near the departure date based on your input or highway construction. You might want to put my cell number in your phone so you can notify me of any problems/delays while making your way to the rendezvous points.
