Cathedral Tours, free with entry donation Guided tour This free tour includes the Cathedral, Chapter House and Magna Carta and can be timed and tailored to your specific interests e.g. stained glass, architecture, embroidery. Introductory talk (10 15 mins) If your group is self-guiding but would like a short, seated introductory talk at the start, our guides would be delighted to give you a brief background history of the Cathedral. This UNESCO protected document is the centrepiece of an interactive exhibition that explores its creation, history and legacy. View it in our beautiful Chapter House alongside the spectacular medieval stone frieze depicting stories from the Old Testament. All tours include access to the Cathedral and Magna Carta - see insert for details World s Oldest Working Clock Our medieval clock has ticked more than 4.4 billion times since it was built and is the oldest mechanical clock still in operation in the world. Free clock talks including rare demonstrations of the striking mechanism are available - times on the website or from groups@salcath.co.uk Music The Cathedral has a choral tradition that stretches back nearly a thousand years. Join us for sung Evensong every evening at 17:30 Monday Saturday and Sundays at 16:00 (except school holidays). Contemporary Art Our permanent collection includes art by Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Helaine Blumenfeld, Emily Young and William Pye, who made the stunning infinity font that sits at the heart of the Cathedral. Cloisters In summer, our stonemasons demonstrate their heritage skills in the Cloisters, and a live video relay will allow visitors to see the peregerines nesting on our Tower up close. Library Tour with Cream Tea Visit our library with an expert, who will show you books selected to illustrate the importance and variety of this unique collection. 45 minutes plus cream tea, maximum of 12 spaces. Access restricted. Learn about the heritage skills our masons use to conserve this ancient building. Your specialist guide will take you to the drawing office, where the templates are made for the stones and restoration is planned, the banker room where masons carve the stone and you ll see the two large saws used to cut the huge quarry blocks down. Medieval Graffiti Tour Learn about our on-going project recording and interpreting the Cathedral s graffiti, includes an optional photo opportunity from the West window balcony. 90 minutes, maximum of 10 spaces. Option to remain on ground level available. Informal Concerts NEW Sing a 30 minute a cappella performance at the Spire Crossing in the heart of the Cathedral or in the Trinity Chapel before or after your guided tour. How to Book Need to Know Food and drink Enjoy good quality food, freshly prepared daily onsite in the Refectory Restaurant and contemplate the fabulous view of our soaring spire through the glass roof. The Refectory is open 09:30 17:00 all year round except for Christmas Day. For fantastic panoramic views of the Cathedral, delicious cream teas, cakes, ice creams and freshly made cold drinks visit the Bell Tower Tea Rooms during the summer. Open mid March end of September, Monday Saturday 10:00 17:00. Booking Shop Hannah and Emily are the friendly voices at the end of the phone who will help you make the most of your visit when you pre-book. They will help you plan guides, language or special interest tours, refreshments and fast track entry. We can also organise private group prayer sessions, just ask. Don t forget to visit the Cathedral shop with its wide range of carefully selected gifts including CDs of the Cathedral choir, guide books, post cards and locally made foodstuffs. All dogs are welcome as long as they are well behaved and kept on a short lead. Water is provided outside the Refectory. Large print self-guiding leaflets are available in English on request. A Touch and Feel model of the Cathedral with linked commentary is situated in the South Nave Aisle. A hearing loop system (minicom) is available during services along with large print orders of services (available on request). What history! What a story! This is a spot we would never have known enough to tour here on our own. We were glad to listen to this marvellous story and savour this historic site. Parking Small groups: Limited parking is available within the Cathedral Close at a fixed cost (see insert) for the whole day including eight disabled car park spaces. Large groups: Entry for coach groups is through St. Ann s Gate, near the Exeter Street coach drop-off point. The walk from here to the Cathedral is level and takes about five minutes.
