50 th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION IN LAS VEGAS By David Mitts April 15 th, Lonnie Epperson and I ventured out beyond the solitude of Yakima to a place known to many as Sin City. Lonnie was nervous, but I told him not to worry that I would protect him in my Shelby GT. Onto Interstate 82 we go, toward Oregon. The first night we stayed in Twin Falls, ID. My thought was to take the shortest route to Vegas which is Highway 93 due south from Twin Falls. The Great Basin Highway is a two lane road through 450 miles of nothingness. At one point I wanted to abort the mission but reminded myself that the reward was seeing hundreds of beautiful Ford Mustangs. The next day we made it to Las Vegas. We were staying at the Luxor and Mustangs were everywhere. After we checked in we went to the Mandalay Bay to get our packets for the 50 th birthday celebration. Lonnie and I ran into a couple of gentleman coming up the stairs and they said they closed the doors on them after waiting three hours in line. They were not happy. We had to come back in the morning and get in line again. By about 8 o clock the next morning we were ready to go to the speedway. Could not wait to get there because we had to walk into the infield of the speedway and get in line again to receive our goodie bags. Oh by the way it is almost 90 degrees out by now. Lonnie was HOT... Literally. There was no official number of cars in attendance, but there were a lot of beautiful ones and not so beautiful ones. Mustang owners young and old brought their cars even if they were not in perfect shape. Each one had a story to tell. It was great to see the passion each driver had for their own car. We did run into some club members. David and Audrey Haynes were enjoying the heat. Also Jim Kingman and his group were relaxing in the shade. One of the many high points of the experience was seeing the new 2015 Mustang. I think Ford did a great job in the design and function. It should be the best handling Mustang ever. Next was going to the Shelby American Gala. The main speakers were Henry Ford III and Carroll Shelby s grandson. Also in attendance was the great Parnelli Jones. I met some fellow Shelby GT owners and had a good chat while we were in another long line to get food. We also toured the new building, museum and gift shop. I had an amazing time. I was a bit disappointed the event was not organized in a more efficient manner. Although we waited in a lot of lines, still wouldn t have missed this experience for the world. It was a once in a lifetime event. Page 7 of 9
