It is located in the northwest part of the state, 18 miles from the western Yucatán gulf coast and the beach resort Progreso and 200 miles west of Cancún. Known as The White City because of the widespread use of white limestone and white paint, this traditional city depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico. Maybe because of its geographical isolation during colonial times and its strong Mayan influence, contemporary Mérida has a unique charming personality. Mérida s location makes it the perfect departure point for amazing nearby excursions, from restored Haciendas, to hundreds of significant Mayan archaeological sites. The cities of Chichén Itza, Uxmal, Sayil, Kabah, Labna, and Edzna are within a 96 miles radius of Mérida.
