Introduction As of August 2013, there were: approximately 52 coal mines in Queensland 41 in, 4 in Northern and 7 in Southern Region, over 20 mineral mines and many medium to large (>50 000 tonnes/year) extractive quarries operating in Queensland.

Coal Development Projects As at the end of Quarter 2 2013 calendar year there were: 96 coal development projects listed in Qld; 69 in Qld; of those 26 are totally within the Regional Council area with another 3 shared with Isaac Regional Council (29); of the 26-18 are new projects while 8 are expansions/extensions and the shared 3 are all new projects.

The Bowen Basin In 2012 calendar year: Queensland produced 194.5 million tonnes of saleable coal. The Bowen Basin produced 80% of this from its 47 operating coal mines. All of Queensland's high-grade coking coal, and 48% of the export-traded thermal coal came from the Bowen Basin. Region's coal mines produced 165 million tonnes of saleable coal, representing 85% of the state's total output, and directly employed ~ 35 150 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions (as at 31 March 2013). Bowen Basin Coal industry directly employed ~ 29,700 FTE positions (as at 31 March 2013). Which is about 91% of Queensland s Coal Industry positions.
