NAME LOCAL: 3RD CYCLE OF PRIMARY LEVEL 5 (PAGE 2) hiking climbing snorkelling white water rafting kayaking swimming archery tree swinging 2. Read the descriptions and circle the correct name of the adventure sports. 1. Most children like swimming in a pool or in the sea if the weather is good but some love (1) climbing / snorkelling - that s swimming with fins, a mask, and a tube called a snorkel that allows you to have your face down in the water and still breathe. When you do this you can see all the animals that live under the water but be careful you don t see a shark! 2. In the UK there aren t a lot of high mountains but there are lots of trees in forests you can go (2) tree swinging / hiking with you family or friends. It s great fun and you can see the tops of other trees when you are there! 3. When you want to go (3) swimming / climbing one of the best places is Scotland. The most famous mountain is Ben Nevis; it s the highest in the UK. You need very strong boots, a tent because it s a long climb to the top and most climbers have a rest or sleep the night and then climb again the next morning. 4. For this adventure sport you need a small boat with a hole in the middle where you sit; your legs are always dry but you need a good anorak and a helmet in case you fall out. You can do this alone or with a friend. Sometimes when school finishes for the holidays in the UK many children go (4) kayaking / swimming with their classmates and teachers for the end of school trip. 5. This sport is in water too but it s a bit more dangerous. You use a raft (a small rubber boat) and travel down rapids on a river. Big groups can all go in the raft but you always need to go (5) white water rafting / hiking with an adult because it can be dangerous and wear a helmet! 6. One of the most popular places to go at weekends is the forest in the UK. There are lots of different activities to do there - a walk in the forest, have a picnic, watch animals and birds that live there or collect mushrooms. One of the best forest adventure sports is (6) archery / paint ball. It s great fun. You have to divide into teams and try to eliminate members of the other team by firing paint at them. LOCAL: 3 RD CYCLE OF PRIMARY LEVEL 5 (PAGE 3) 3. Read the story then answer the questions. My favourite adventure sport is snorkelling. I usually go every weekend with my family in the summer when it s hot and sunny. My mum is frightened of the water and she can t swim so she sits under a sunshade and reads or does a crossword. My sister loves swimming like me so we love Saturdays in the summer with our dad! We never go snorkelling alone because it can be dangerous. You don t need a lot of equipment for snorkelling; your swimsuit and a snorkel that s something you wear over your face that has a tube to let you breathe and of course it s best to go when there are no big waves and no cold weather! We have a favourite place because there isn t a lot of water there but when we go snorkelling we see lots of beautiful fish, crabs and sometimes an octopus. There s a big red one that lives under a rock that we always try to visit! Our dad teaches us about different fish and we learn their names so we have good fun and learn a lot at the same time. 1. The children go snorkelling alone. True / False 2. They go when the weather is good. True / False 3. Their mum goes with them, but she doesn t go snorkelling. True / False 4. They need a helmet to go snorkelling. True / False 5. They need a snorkel to go under water. True / False 6. Their dad teaches them about the world under the water. True / False Points /12
