WHERE ARE YOU GOING? BORNEO Do you dream of arriving on a tropical island where the jungle lines pristine white sands? Of trekking into unknown jungle; home to species still to be discovered and waking up to the chatter of monkeys? In Borneo you may realise your dreams have come true! Spend time with communities living deep in the jungle and discover their traditional ways of life. Get up close with the famous orangutans and dance to tribal beats as you get used to a life far removed from what you know! WHAT IT S LIKE... PHYSICAL RATING: Moderately challening expedition. CULTURAL OR HISTORICAL INTEREST: The population of the island is one of the most varied human social groups in the world. LANGUAGES: Malay, Dusunic, Murutk, Paitanic, Sama Bajau & English is widely spoken. GEOGRAPHY: Lowland and highland. Rainforest/jungle, mountains and coast. CLIMATE: Apart from the mountains the bulk of the country enjoys the same tropical climate. Average temperature: 25-30ºC.
WHAT IS AN? Expeditions are a life-changing experience, a chance for young people to go on a fun and educational journey with their friends. Most expedition destinations are in developing countries, allowing students to not only experience stunning parts of the world but also witness a very different way of life, often with the chance to immerse themselves in the culture through project work. HOW IT WORKS... EXPEDITION TIMELINE 1 2 3 4 5 EXPEDITION LAUNCH ITINERARY DEVELOPMENT FUNDRAISING LEADER MEETING EXPEDITION TRAINING FINAL PREPARATION FUNDRAISING Our expeditions are made up of four main phases; acclimatisation, trekking, project and rest & relaxation. During the build-up we put students in the driving seat, allowing them to finalise their itinerary alongside our experts. Acclimatisation Arrive in country and spend some time getting used to the new culture whilst planning your next phase and changing currency. Trekking You may take part in a trek doing either a cultural trek through villages or an attempt to summit a nearby mountain! Project Dedicate some time to helping on a project - either community or environmental based, often working with local people. R&R Enjoy some R&R! This could involve a few days on a beautiful beach, reflecting on your expedition or an adrenaline adventure.
EXAMPLE ITINERARY The below itinerary has been created by our Destination Managers as an example of what you may choose to do on expedition. DAY 1-3 DAY 4-5 DAY 6-8 DAY 9-10 DAY 11 DAY 12-16 DAY 17 DAY 18 DAY 19 DAY 20-21 Depart the UK and arrive in the coastal town of Kota Kinabalu. Make preparations for your itinerary and purchase any necessary supplies. Acclimatise to the tropical jungle in a jungle camp and learn all about survival techniques in the rainforest. Meet the Dusun people, enjoy their hospitality and embark on a cultural trekking tour. Drive across to Sepilok where you can make new friends at the world famous Orang-utan. Travel up to Kudat to work on an environmental community project Work may vary from reforestation to maintenance of community buildings. Spend your final day organising a sports day for the local children. Return to Kota Kinabalu and prepare for your well earned R&R Travel out to the TAR islands where you can sit back and relax on the white sandy beaches of this pure paradise. Once rejuvenated, head back to Kota Kinabalu, pack your rucksack and head out for last minute souvenirs. In the evening, dine out for your final meal to celebrate completion of your expedition. Bid Borneo farewell and travel back to the UK for your homecoming. Due to the changing nature of the world over the build up period, Outlook may be required to change aspects of, or the order of the itinerary. Outlook will consult with the Link Teacher/Group Leader and all participants if this is the case.
ADVENTURE At the Itinerary Development Session, with guidance from one of our destination experts, the team will be able to choose from options to finalise their itinerary. The choices may include the project they work with, the challenge level and type of trek and where they go for some rest and relaxation! Acclimatise to the tropical environment in a wilderness jungle camp and learn all about survival techniques in the rainforest. Your time here will involve day and night hikes, trap building, blowpipe practise and learning the 101 uses of bamboo. The team will be cooking on fires and camping out in basic jungle shelters. Don t forget to zip up your fly sheet! Embark on the Heritage Trail, a three day trek that winds its way through the hills and valleys around Mount Kinabalu, recently declared as a World Heritage site. The Dusun people who live in the hillside villages are renowned for being among the most friendly and hospitable people on Earth. Stay in local villages along the way and accompany local people to their farms to plant crops or trek with them into the nearby jungle to gather medicinal plants. PROJECT The Kudat region, commonly referred to as the Tip of Borneo, is one of the last remaining coastal areas in Sabah. It has not yet been fully exploited by either tourism or large scale commercial agriculture. There are still unexplored areas of coastal rainforests as well as dozens of pristine beaches which are vital breeding habitats for sea turtles. The local people of this region are some of the poorest in the state and their needs are often overlooked in the turf war between companies who are hungry to buy up the land for private development. Howard Stanton, your project coordinator for the whole phase, is a natural social entrepreneur, Howard is actively involved in many development projects in the area including setting up his own restaurant which trains and employs local women in hospitality and cooking. As well as assisting with the developments, Howard also likes teams to organise a sports afternoon down on the beach for children in the local villages. This is typically attended by up to 60 children and is a great way to interact and engage with the local community. Visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok. Enjoy close up encounters with these fascinating creatures whilst learning about their nature and ever declining habitat. You can also visit the nearby Rainforest Development Centre to learn about Bornean flora and fauna. Wander along the treetop walkways that connect the observation towers, from where you can look out over the forest canopy; by far the most rewarding element of a trip here. Finally travel out to The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a 30 minutes boat ride from Kota Kinabalu. There are forest trails, white sandy beaches and warm waters- all of which makes for a fantastic place for some well earned rest and relaxation.
