Kathmandu is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Nepal. The city is the urban core of the Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which also contains two sister cities namely Patan or Lalitpur, 5 kilometres to its southeast and Bhaktapur, 14 kilometres to its east. The Itinerary Day 5: Pokhara - Kathmandu Delhi, India (B) After breakfast depart for Kathmandu by surface. On arrival transfer to the international airport to board a flight for Delhi. So overwhelming is the magic monument, that Agra has been immortalised as the City of the Taj. In the afternoon take a city tour visiting the Taj Mahal, built by the Moghul Emperor Shahjahan in 1630 for his queen Mumtaz Mahal to enshrine her mortal remains. Besides the Taj, the Agra Fort (also called the Red Fort) makes an interesting sight that is visited. Besides the historical monuments, one can also explore Agra s rich heritage of handicrafts in its markets. Beautifully laid out gardens and parks, attractive monuments and marvellous heritage hotels, once the residence of Maharajas are worth admiration. Not to mention the ambling camels and cheerful people in multi-hued costumes that makes your trip to the pink city a memorable one. The Itinerary Morning excursion to the Royal Amber Fort - Amber is located at a distance of 11 kilometres from Jaipur and was the old fort of the Kachhwaha clan of Amber, which used to be the capital, till it was moved to Jaipur. The fort is built with white marble and red sandstone and look even more attractive because of the Maota Lake in the foreground. The fort in itself is a beautiful sight to behold but as one looks on the fort with its clear reflection on the lake in the front, one cannot help but wonder if it is a dream or a beautiful illusion. Afternoon city tour visiting City Palace, the former royal residence built in a blend of the Rajasthani and Mughal styles. Jantar Mantar, is the largest of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh. The Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds was constructed for the royal ladies to watch the royal processions without being seen. Amber Fort, situated just outside the city, is perhaps the most beautiful example of Rajasthani forts and gives a grand view of the city down below. En-route visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage - set amongst the verdant hills of Kegalle is a unique orphanage, where the tiny tots weigh 60kg or more. This is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the world s first and only elephant orphanage established to feed, nurse and house young elephants lost or abandoned by their mothers. Other occupants are elephants displaced from their natural environment by development projects or those found wounded. Visitors can see the baby elephants being fed milk from gigantic feeding bottles or bathed in the river, which flows nearby an unforgettable sight! Established in 1975, by the Wildlife Department and National Zoological gardens, which subsequently led to a breeding programme which more than twenty five elephants have been born since 1984. Afterwards continue on to Kandy to check-in to the hotel. The highlight of the city s calendar is the Esala Perahera festival, when a replica of the casket enclosing the Tooth is taken in procession for ten glittering nights in July/ August by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and approximately 100 Elephants. Colombo the trade and commercial capital has long been the traditional gateway to the Orient. Sri Lanka s largest city, it is located on the west coast and draws together all the cultures, religions and influences of foreign lands into a potpourri of sounds, smells and a kaleidoscope of colour. The original traders and settlers - the Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch and the British have left in their wake churches and monuments, names and religions, costumes and food and smatterings of their languages which have been absorbed into the speech of the Sri Lankan. Today, Colombo is a fascinating city a happy blend of east & west, past & present, with a charm of its own. A less known but amazingly true fact is that Colombo has a superb range of high quality restaurants serving food from all over the world and some of the best shopping opportunities in Asia. The main seaport of Sri Lanka is in Colombo & adjoining it, are Pettah, a local bazaar and trading area. Built by the Dutch beginning in 1663, 36-hectare fort occupies most of the promontory that forms the older part of Galle. Many old Dutch buildings are still intact inside the fort. UNESCO has recognized fort as a world heritage site. In the afternoon enjoy a city sightseeing tour of Galle Fort to explore this magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a spellbinding mixture of Dutch, Portuguese and British history. Its oozes colonial charm with an eclectic range of low rise European architecture, tucked down a lace of narrow lanes and alleyways. The tour is part driven and part walking and covers the important highlights within the fort. These include the thick walled ramparts that withstood the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. It explores the chain of huge bastions that guard Galle Fort from the outside world. It explores the Dutch Reformed Church, the Dutch Government House and the Maritime Museum. Afterwards enjoy a guided tour to Meera Mosque, which was built in 1904 as well as the All Saints Church that was built in 1871. The fort today offers a plethora of cafes, restaurants, vintage shops, chic boutiques and art galleries.
