Study Tour to Chongqing and Chengdu, China from 26 May to 1 June 2014 6 June 2014 The annual study tour is one of the largest departmental events for BSE students to explore the variety of building engineering system, and to get acquainted with other countries around the world. Meanwhile, the tour also broadens students horizons in relation to building design as well as understanding the local culture. The study tour was organized by the Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) from 26 May to 1 June 2014, which the destinations of the study tour were Chongqing and Chengdu of China this year. A group of PolyU BSE undergraduate students, led by 7 BSE academic staff members, participated in the tour. PolyU BSE Group photo at Chongqing University The BSE staff and students arrived at Chongqing in the afternoon of 26 May 2014 after 2-hour flight. They began with the official exchange programme of Chongqing University on 27 May 2014. Our staff and students were warmly welcomed by the senior staff of Chongqing University. The BSE group was led by the senior staff and visited the Faculty of Urban Construction and Environmental Engineering, and Faculty of Construction Management and Real Estate of the University. They were invited to visit the laboratories of building services engineering and HVAC system. Thereafter, to facilitate cultural and academic exchanges, a group discussion P1/7
between our students and the Faculty of Construction Management and Real Estate students was arranged. PolyU BSE group visited the laboratories of the Faculty of Urban Construction and Environmental Engineering Student activity with the Faculty of Construction Management and Real Estate students The next day after visiting the Chongqing University, the PolyU BSE group departed from Chongqing and went to Chengdu for the next University visit. After 2.5-hour travelling, the group arrived at Chengdu and visited the Sichuan University. PolyU BSE group was warmly welcomed by Sichuan University staff Dr. LONG Enshen and students. After that, the Head of BSE Professor W.K. CHOW and BSE staff Professor T.M. CHUNG gave a presentation about the introduction of BSE Department and departmental research areas to the Sichuan University staff and students. Before the presentation came to an end, there were a Q&A session and a students sharing session. P2/7
Presentation on PolyU BSE research areas by Prof. CHOW and Prof. CHUNG PolyU BSE group photo at Sichuan University The BSE group continued the tour and visited the Institute of Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR) in Sichuan University on 29 May 2014. Jointly established by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Sichuan University, China's first Institute for Disaster Management and Reconstruction (IDMR) has been officially opened in May 2013. Currently PolyU is introducing some of its professional programmes across the border through IDMR to support the reconstruction and sustainable development of Sichuan. IDMR is located in Jiang An Campus of Sichuan University, the premises of IDMR covers an area of 20,000 square metres. The Institute is home to six laboratories as well as one disaster database and resource centre. P3/7
PolyU BSE group photo taken at IDMR Introduction of IDMR by the staff After the visit of IDMR, the Sichuan University staff Dr. LONG Enshen led the BSE group to visit the New Century Global Centre in Chengdu. The Global Centre is the world s biggest building constructed by China. The 100-metre-high New Century Global Centre is a symbol of the spread of China's boom, 500m long and 400m wide, with 1.7 million square metres of floor space. According to local authorities, it is big enough to hold 20 Sydney Opera Houses. P4/7
Global Centre In addition to the technical visit, the BSE group visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Beichuan Earthquake Museum. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a world advanced nature conservation and education institution which aims to promote conservation education as well as giant panda breeding, and uses the support of its strong science education expertise and human resources to play a significant role in spreading awareness about biodiversity conservation. All BSE students felt excited in this activity. The Beichuan Earthquake Museum is a memorial museum of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which was founded and open for public in 2012. The Annual Study Tour ended on 1 June 2014 and was a great success. All students enjoyed a useful and enjoyable trip with their classmates and BSE staff. BSE would like to thank Chongqing University and Sichuan University for their support and arrangement.
