THE PREFACE The United Kingdom may have a soft spot for old favourites like bangers and mash and fish and chips but we all know the British appetite for curry remains unrivalled. Once again, the Curry Life Awards and Gala Dinner celebrates the success of Great British Curry s and Restaurateurs who worked hard to make this food popular and also stimulating economic growth. Some ten years ago when Curry Life Magazine was first launched, we mainly had one focus, which is to bring the chefs of our Curry Industry into the limelight. The chefs are the backbone of our industry; actually they are the ones who made the food popular. It is their innovation that has given us our favourite national dish Chicken Tikka Masala. We discovered their talents were very often overlooked or sometime not given the opportunity to exploit their fullest potential. I am happy to say with Curry Life s continued support and campaign this situation has now changed. Over the years, Curry Life has discovered and promoted hundreds of extremely talented chefs, through our various events such as food festivals, Curry Life s Club and Curry Life Awards. We are also pleased to see chefs are now getting recognition from various Curry Industry organisations. However, Curry Life proudly remained the trendsetter. This year awards ceremony recognising the best 42 curry chefs in the UK, International Curry of the Year and the Jaguar Award of Excellence for recognising an individual who has worked tirelessly to promote the industry. We Brits have a long-standing love affair with curry dating back to 1809 when the first Indian restaurant opened in London. Curry has now become one of the most traded currencies in the culinary arena of Great Britain. The Curry Life Magazine is keen to help the British curry industry expand by organising event like this one, the Curry Life Awards and our unique brand of British Curry Festival in various countries. In February this year in partnership with the UK trade and Investment (UKTI) we have organised Taste of Britain Curry Festival and Ethnic Food and Drinks Exhibition in Ljubljana, Slovenia, involving Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia. Along with us, many famous UK Curry Industry brands from rice spice to beer made their presence visible. As a result of this, I am pleased to say our export has grown to that region. Michelin stars are considered to the pinnacle of achievement in the culinary world but there are relatively few Indian restaurants currently holding the honour. Last April, Curry Life Magazine organised an exclusive workshop where two highly acclaimed Michelin Starred chefs Atul Kochhar and Dominic Chapman who shared their hints, tips and techniques and innovative ideas. In addition, Mo Gherras, who has experience of managing many Michelin Starred restaurants, has given tips on how to manage front house of restaurant better and offered advice on how to achieve highest service standards. Last month Taste of Britain Curry Festival was held in Calcutta, India, which received positive responses from local diners and food critiques. Six chefs from different part of the UK, including Michelin chef Dominic Chapman were involved in this British food promotion. The festival attracted massive support and we are particularly grateful for the support from the Prime Minister, David Cameron and the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband MP for our tireless work to promote British curry. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Curry Life Magazine and Taste of Britain Curry Festival team for putting up huge number of hours in a day to make all our effort successful. We are also grateful for the support from Madhu s our events caterer in the UK, Hyatt Regency Hotel Kolkata, Hotel Park Ljubljana, Air India, Indra Travel, British Embassy in Ljubljana and the British Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. Curry Life headed to India in August 2013 to showcase the talents of some of the UK s best chefs at the Taste of Britain Curry Festival. And what more fitting place to celebrate our tenth anniversary than in Kolkata, former capital of the British Raj and home to the renowned Bengali cuisine? The festival, which had the support of the Prime Minister David Cameron, ran from 23-31st August at the Five-Star Hyatt Regency Hotel, Salt Lake City and was sizzling hot news in Kolkata. Media and television crews including BBC World News, The Telegraph and Times arrived in droves to report on the festival. s were feted and interviewed and the world famous British curries including Chicken Tikka Masala and Balti dishes from Birmingham went down a storm (literally on one particularly blustery day!). But, monsoon weather aside, there was still more than enough sunshine to go round. This year the festival caused an even bigger stir thanks to Michelin star chef Dominic Chapman of the Royal Oak Paley Street who accompanied the team to champion the cause of British food. Diners were treated to traditional favourites such as Roast Lamb, Apple Crumble, and gourmet Fish and Chips served in Dominic s inimitable style. And it seemed that the foodies of Kolkata could not get enough of the team s fusion dishes with a quintessentially British twist. The four chefs from the UK: Allam Shah Ullah of Cutler s Spice in Sheffield; Tofuzzul Miah from Bayleaf, Barnet; Salim Siddique of Raj Bari in Yarm and Jamal Uddin Ahmed from Rochester s Shozna restaurant, saw the festival as the chance of a lifetime. Not only did they get to learn from chefs of Dominic s calibre, they also were under the expert guidance of Partha Mittra, the consultant chef of Curry Life, whose culinary credentials include a stint as personal cook to a former Indian Prime Minister. Over the ten days of the festival the team showcased over 70 signature dishes on a global stage. They met some amazing people, VIP guests, gained new friends and contacts and quickly become the stars of the show. They were also able to up their game, learning new techniques and skills, growing in confidence, finally returning with lots of creative ideas to implement in their restaurants back home with the benefit of local publicity and media exposure. The Taste of Britain festival was founded to promote the talents of our home grown curry chefs but it has also become something of a cultural exchange. Our curry ambassadors have now travelled to countries such as Bangladesh, Sweden, Spain, Slovenia and the Middle East showcasing the British version of curry. As the Rt Hon Frank Dobson MP commented during the launch of the festival at the Red Fort in London s Soho One of the greatest ties between communities is food I congratulate Curry Life on helping to build bridges between two great nations the United Kingdom and India with food. We were flying the British flag in India, said Dominic Chapman. It was my first time in India and a fantastic opportunity to visit an amazing country.
