Your team has a place at the above event and I enclose further venue details and a risk assessment. Please remember that your team must consist of four students from S1 and S2 (Scotland) including no more than two from the upper year group, unless you wish to field a team of younger students (there is no lower limit). Your team must be accompanied by a supervising member of staff, who will play a key role on the day. fter being briefed and reallocated to another team at the start, they will help run and mark each round (answers are provided) while retaining responsibility for their students throughout the day. Lunch is provided for one supervising adult per team, but please ensure that your students bring their own packed lunch and refreshments. If your school requires you to send a second adult, please ask them to bring their own lunch. We cannot accommodate parents or other spectators. Please arrive at 10am for a 10.30am start. We aim to finish by or soon after 3pm. Your team will receive starter questions on arrival to warm up before the event begins; information from these can also prove useful later in the competition. You should all bring warm clothing, as it can be cold in some of the halls used for the events. I enclose a town centre map and Paisley campus map for your information. The event will take place in the Chancellor's Hall (previously called the Brough Hall). Please note that parking will NOT be available on the University campus, but paid parking is available in the Paisley Centre car park, shown as Town Centre ultistorey Car Park on the enclosed Paisley campus map. If coming by minibus, please note there is a height restriction of 1.90m in that car park. However, you might find a space in one of the smaller open-air car parks nearby, of which you can find details at: https://en.parkopedia.co.uk/ (search by postcode). If coming by rail, the campus is a 10-minute walk from Paisley's Gilmour Street station (shown on the town centre map). There are four rounds at the regional final: Group Round Crossnumber Shuttle Relay (this is an active round and we recommend that students bring trainers even if not required by the venue) Past materials can be downloaded from www.tmc.ukmt.org.uk and we encourage you to use these in school as preparation. The use of calculators and any geometry equipment will not be permitted on the day. t the regional final you will be asked to sign a form declaring that: the accompanying staff member(s) has undergone the appropriate DBS (or equivalent) checks; permission has been sought for photographs or videos to be taken (e.g. for publicity purposes). TE THS CHLLENGE 2018 Risk ssessment Venue details: University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Campus Overall risk For most of the day, students will be sitting or standing at a table, which is a low risk activity. The Relay round involves running from one part of the room to another, provided the floor is suitable for running. If the floor is deemed unsuitable, students will be required to walk. This is a low risk activity (see below). On-site supervision There will be a UKT event leader, who has overall responsibility for running the event. They will also have an assistant. The event leader and their assistant will have completed a DBS check. Each team of four students is accompanied by at least one supervising teacher, and this teacher is responsible for the welfare of his or her students. Fire safety The event leader will be responsible for communicating emergency evacuation procedures to teachers at the start of the event. Relay round The event leader will assess the floor of the venue at the start of the day and decide whether the students will be able to run during the Relay round. We recommend to schools prior to the event that students bring indoor trainers for this round. The event leader will remind students to place bags away from the running area and to push chairs under tables to reduce the risk of tripping over obstacles whilst running.

The competition combines mathematical, communication and teamwork skills and offers students another way to express and develop their enjoyment of mathematics. In order to promote this work, local media may be invited to come along and report on the day, so I would be grateful if you could give permission for your child to be photographed or filmed if he/she is asked, or captured in the background of a shot, or is a member of the winning team.
