Each traffic calming device has appropriate applications, addresses one or more of the objectives and has disadvantages or negative impacts on high vehicle speeds. Trial and error could be necessary when reviewing implementation of a traffic calming method, in order to assess and address the issues of vehicle speed, safety and quality of life in home zones as well as in public spaces such as rail stations, schools and streets in a correct and safe approach. All developed countries use traffic calming techniques to manage vehicular speeds. Their strategy is to put at the forefront pedestrians and cyclists and minimise the dominance of vehicles in the streets and creating better townscapes. EU countries that adopt this strategy include Denmark, Holland and Germany by implementing a mixture of traditional techniques into modern spaces, blending them seamlessly within the surroundings. In Britain, the measures mostly employed to tackle high speeds in key routes and highways are traffic lights and signals, speed detection cameras and some traffic calming measures such as speed cushions and traffic islands. Other means of traffic calming implementation are pedestrian railguarding, rumble strips and build-outs which are mostly used in side roads and rural areas. Different colour co-ordinations and road designs add a more vibrant and lively character to each city, giving it a distinct appearance while keeping its dwellers safe. Aiming for adequate and safe transportation provided from home zones to all key routes and back is ideal for a city to flourish; roads which are reliable and comfortable to drive on must connect residential developments with the city centre, main business offices and educational institutes as well as retail and leisure locations. Consequently, by designing safer routes to work, school and leisure, there will be: A reduction in road casualties as well as air and noise pollution, minimising the impact that vehicles have on the environment and give a better quality of life for all area residents and users An encouragement for more sustainable and healthy travel behaviours such as cycling and walking, which can assist in tackling the soaring obesity levels from a young age A new high quality, high frequency public transport system can add value to the area and encourage sustainable travelling as well as health patterns A rise in passenger satisfaction and user experience which can lead to economic regeneration of the area and even of the vicinity. The V side of the block is used to start or end the slope depending on the direction, and the domed side is laid at the top of the hump to give the correct angle for laying the paving on the table top.
