Nowhere else will you find such a varied mix of architectural styles in such a small area as in Prague. For the past thousand years the city has miraculously escaped major disasters and devastating war damage. Czech cut glass is famous throughout the world, and this success is strongly connected with the traditional Moser glass factory in Karlovy Vary. Its founder, a tailor s son named Ludwig Moser, first opened an engraving workshop in the centre of town, but in 1857 he decided to establish a plant for the production of glass, which soon earned a reputation as the most prestigious glassmaker in AustriaHungary. Traditionally made Karlovy Vary glass has decorated the residences of many exceptional personalities, such as Queen Elizabeth II, the Norwegian King Haakon VII, Pope Pius XI and Elton John, which is why it is sometimes called the Glass of Kings. Right inside the Moser Glassworks is a museum that presents the history of the company. Franz Ferdinand was a successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, who bought the castle in 1887.
