The Sky Is Falling Well, it really is not the sky that is falling. But there are leaves falling like a January Nor easter. They cover everything in sight. I know it is not much of a problem most of the time. Until you have to rake and blow and rake and blow and then more fall. We work until they finally quit falling and now we have a nice brown lawn. There is another problem with this phenomenon. These leaves also like to lay on the roads that we like to ride. With four wheels there is not too much problem, but with only two wheels, now that is a different story. Be aware of this and make sure that your speed is adjusted to the situation. They also will stick if no one has driven on them. When they are dry, they can also create some slipping. Ride defensively. I have also been on a lot of roads lately that are filling the sides with gravel. Watch out for this as well. When the next truck runs off the road there will be stones there. Look for this in corners. Now enjoy the weather and do what we all enjoy doing and that is RIDING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be Safe, LaMar Shelly NC O2 Chapter Educator 4

Old Mill Village at Henry River. Wade Shepherd owned the mill village and he died 11-08-15 at 87 years old. The old mill was our little claim to national fame. It was featured in the first movie of the Hunger Games. Sara Shelly Western ghost towns get all the attention. Tourists flock to the dusty remnants of mining towns left over from the peak of the Gold Rush era, now abandoned but still filled with iconic tumbleweeds and horse troughs, hoping to soak in a little of the Old West. But there was another financial boom in the early 1900's; one that that eventually left just as many abandoned villages in its wake the Industrial Revolution. As new methods of manufacturing and automation swept the northeastern United States like wildfire, tiny towns and villages sprung up along rivers and shipping ports, attracted to easy transportation and the unlimited (and free) power the steady flow of a river could provide. Thus the mill town was born, with the quaint image of a riverside factory attached to a giant waterwheel just as iconic as any horse-drawn carriage serving as its crown jewel. The Henry River Mill Village was just one such town. Pictures by Sara Shelly The mill opened in 1905, and like so many gold-panning towns, the promise of jobs and prosperity followed. And it delivered. Before long, the town grew to incorporate more than 20 buildings, supporting a population that worked almost exclusively at the mill, producing miles upon miles of fine yarn for half a century. But like any boom town, this one was destined to go bust. As industry marched on, the mill town became less and less useful (as did, one must admit, having an abundance of yarn), and the Henry River Mill shut down in 1973. Even before that, the town had begun to die. People moved away. For work, for family for a more thriving environment. Almost as a metaphor for its bygone era, the people supported the mill rather than the other way around, and when the people started to leave, the mill finally went under. The town was finally abandoned in 1987, when its last resident left. All that now remains is a strikingly modern ghost town from the industrial age. More curiously, it's entirely owned by a single man. 83-year-old Wade Shepherd is a nearby resident, and now owns all 20 buildings in Henry River Mill Village proper. He bought them because he could, because why not, and because of safety before he did, the village was becoming an unseemly place, attractive to vandals and rapscallions up to no good. A brief breath of life came back to Henry River Mill Village in 2012 by way of fame and fortune Hollywood big wigs thought the run down village would serve as the perfect setting for the post-apocalyptic dystopia "District 12" featured in the film "The Hunger Games." The town was featured in several scenes, and briefly thereafter was descended upon by tourists and thrill-seekers, running tours, trails and sight-seeing trips hoping to capitalize on the story's monumental popularity. One wonders, though. After the fandemonium calms down, and Henry River Mill Village turns back into a metaphorical pumpkin of a town, what then? This piece of history isn't quite finished, but more than anything it's a living museum demonstrating the boom of an America now past, and it will continue to be that, if nothing else. Hap s Gill -- Salisbury NC submitted by Paul Kennedy What s better than a nice ride and a good place to eat? Let me recommend Hap s Grill @ 116 N. Main St, Salisbury NC. It s a neat little place that has only stand up eating inside and two small tables outside. The hours are 10am 3pm Mon Sat. Get there early as the hotdogs and hamburgers are highly desired by all. Boomer really likes the hotdogs and encourages everyone to try a hotdog or burger (if you don t like it, Boomer says save it for me). Check it out and see if it might be worth a trip for the chapter. They are on face book also. If anyone knows of someplace they would like to ride, let me know as I am always on the lookout for good places to visit. After eating and you want someplace else to go. Try the NC Dept of Transportation Museum located at 411 S Salisbury Ave, Spencer, NC 28159 (aprox. 3 miles from Haps). Check out their website as there is too much to tell about in this article. FYI, if you have little ones they offer a polar express to the North Pole to visit Santa. Take care and ride safe.. ATGATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two small county judges both got arrested for speeding on the same day. Rather than call the state Supreme Court for a visiting judge, each agreed to hear the other's case. The first judge took the bench while the second stood at the defendant's table, and admitted his guilt. The sentencing judge immediately suspended both the fine and costs. They switched places. The second judge admitted that he was speeding, too. Thereupon the first judge immediately fined him $250 and ordered him to pay court costs. The second judge was furious. "I suspended your fine and costs, but you threw the book at me!", he fumed. The first judge looked at him and replied, "This is the second such case we've had in here today. Someone has to get tough about all this speeding!" 10

FUN PAGE A Football team was on the field during practice, when to their surprise; a big turkey suddenly walked up to the coach and demanded a tryout. Are you crazy, hollered the coach, we don t give tryouts to turkeys. Before he knew it the turkey started dashing towards the football and made a fantastic catch. That was amazing, exclaimed the coach I have never seen anything like that! How much do you want for a year? Don t worry about money, said the turkey, let me just ask you something, does the season go past thanksgiving? ************************************************************************* 13
