Safari Motorcoach Corporation was acquired by Monaco in 2001, making the Safari Panther, which was first introduced in 2003, a full Monaco coach. In fact, it is generally considered the first of the hugely impressive Monaco Dynasty models. The only difference in those days was that the Panther had a Cat engine whereas the Dynasty was powered by a Cummins engine. In many ways, the SafarI Panther was ahead of its time, certainly at the leading edge of sophistication and design and, even by today s standards, includes features that are not commonly found in luxury motorhomes. The chassis is the Roadmaster S/T and has a tag axle. Ten outboard mounted airbags and ten shocks make up the suspension. That CAT engine (a C-12) provides 1550 pounds of torque and is coupled with a 6 speed Allison 4000MH World Transmission. The Panther s dual air braking system with ABS, automatic Traction control and slack adjusters all offer some re-assurance that the ride will be smooth and safe. One of the aspects of the floorplan we absolutely love, is the size of our kitchen. It is huge with lots of countertop-space. Other features we really enjoy include the dual couch sitting area (instead of one couch and a set of armchairs), an automatic, air-powered, levelling system and a full coach monitoring system. A pair a roof-mounted solar panels, a residential refrigerator, six 6V golf cart batteries, an integrated reverse osmosis water filtering system and an upgraded Aqua-hot system, all installed as after market upgrades, make for a wonderfully equipped motorhome. As you can imagine with such a huge engine and extensive airbag suspension, the ride is very smooth. The engine cruises along at about 1400 RPMs. I find that if I keep the speed at around 58-60 MPH, I can get 8-9 miles per gallon, but if I drop to 55 MPH, I can actually get 10 or more miles per gallon, impressive for such a big rig. The Subaru Forrester The tow is a 2015 Subaru Forester with 32,000 miles on her. She is a 6 speed manual transmission and is hooked up to the Safari Panther using the Airforce One braking system and the Roadmaster Stirling All-Terrain tow bar. We settled on the 6-speed manual transmission Forrester (which we absolutely love) because we can tow her with all wheels on the ground. It has Subaru s legendary All Wheel Drive (AWD) transmission and, coupled with a set of Snow and Mud tires, has proven to give us superb traction and reliability on all sorts of roads, including snow and ice.
Airforce One We picked the AirForce One braking system for two reasons: 1. It was air-powered, using a small air tank as a buffer to isolate it from the coach s air brake system. 2. Braking is proportional. In other words, a gentle braking action in the motorhome, causes a gentle braking function in the tow vehicle (so no jerking when braking). A nice side benefit of this braking system is the fact it requires no set-up. The unit in the Subaru includes a piston that is permanently mounted on the braking pedal (well out of the way of your foot of course) so all you need to do is hook up the car, plug in the air hose to the connector in the front and you are ready to go. Why are we selling it? We found that going full-time was not for us, but would have kept the rig were it not for our health. Linda s back prevents her from driving it and I suffered a mild stroke end of last year. We were finding we were going out less and less so have decided to sell her. She has many good years left in her and we know she will bring lots of joy to her new owners.
