To: Students interested in YMCA Camp Wapsie LIT/CIT Program for 2018 Hello! I hope all is well and school is off to a great start for you! Summer camp 2017 may be over but camp is still busy with visiting retreat groups and starting to prepare for special camps and next summer! Enclosed is the information you will need to apply for the Leader-In-Training (LIT) or Counselor-In-Training (CIT) programs. If you are interested in these great programs, please complete the enclosed application and return it by October 31 st. Selection into the program is based on your application and evaluations from counselors on how campers did at summer camp. We award session choices based on when we receive your application in our office. Please understand the LIT and CIT program involves a serious commitment, not only to YMCA Camp Wapsie and its goals and mission, but to you as well. Carefully read all of the enclosed information. The application must be filled out completely with your parent/guardian's signature. A $75.00 non-refundable deposit will be required at the time of acceptance. (Please do not send deposit with this application.) The balance is due four weeks before you report to camp. For your planning purposes the prices are listed below. We offer tiered pricing with the leadership program. Tier A most accurately reflects the true cost of camp. Tier B is partially subsidized. Tier C is more subsidized. After LIT and CITs are chosen you will pick your tier when you fill out your forms and register for the program. Please select the highest tier that fits your budget to allow YMCA Camp Wapsie to best stretch our funding and continue to improve the quality of each camper s experience and our camp facilities. Tier A Tier B Tier C LIT $725 $675 $625 CIT $825 $775 $725 Our tiered pricing system in no way influences the experience our campers receive! We simply feel it is important to share the true cost of running YMCA Camp Wapsie. This gives families the opportunity to decide how much they can contribute toward their child s experience. If you have any questions, please call (319) 435-2577. We hope to see you at Halloween Camp; scheduled for October 28-29. Registration information is at www.crmetroymca.org. Kindly, Drew Demery Summer Camp Director Enc.: Application / Program Description

YMCA CAMP WAPSIE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM YMCA Camp Wapsie has a multi-year Leadership Development Program with the purpose of developing the leadership potential in high school age youth. STAGES OF THE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM LEADER IN TRAINING (LIT)** LIT s pay a fee and attend a three-week summer training session. Participants are entering 10 th or 11 th grades. Selection as a LIT is based on your application and a positive recommendation by the camp staff*. The program is designed to prepare LIT s for leadership roles at camp and in their communities. They live together in cabin groups. The focus of the LIT program is on general leadership skills and interpersonal interaction with an introduction to problem solving, communication, camping skills, camp mission/goals, basic lifesaving, and camp work projects. COUNSELORS IN TRAINING (CIT)** CITs pay a fee and attend a four-week summer training session, which includes experience as cabin and program assistants. Participants are entering 11 th or 12 th grades. The LIT Director and the Camp Director base the selection of a CIT on the successful completion of the LIT program and a positive recommendation*. The focus of the CIT program is on camp counseling skills and working with groups. ROTATING JUNIOR COUNSELORS (RJC) RJCs are paid staff members who act as cabin, program, maintenance, and kitchen assistants for the whole summer. Participants are entering grade 12 or are high school graduates. Selection as an RJC is based on performance as a CIT, application and a positive recommendation*. The focus of the RJC Program is to put leadership and counseling skills to work to benefit the campers and YMCA Camp Wapsie. *People who have not had prior Camp Wapsie experience are still welcome and encouraged to apply to the Leadership Development Program. **LIT s and CIT s will be expected to assume responsibilities beyond those of a camper, but remain campers and are not considered staff members. They do leave camp on weekends. PROGRAM GOALS 1) Increase leadership skills so participants will be prepared to assume camp and community leadership roles. 2) Increase human relation skills between the young leaders, campers, adults (staff), and peers. 3) Increase sense of responsibility and service to others. 4) Increase sense of self-worth. 5) Increase appreciation for the natural world around us. 6) Increase teaching skills in program areas relevant to YMCA Camp Wapsie and the mission of the YMCA. 7) Experience in community and cooperative living. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Attend all training sessions (usually one each morning and afternoon) with a desire to learn. 2. Promote group unity and participate in all group activities. 3. Help with the cleanliness of all areas of camp. 4. Promote good conduct at meal times. 5. Assist in assigned program activities. 6. Participate in general camp activities when assigned. 7. Assist counselors and other staff members when assigned to them. 8. LITs usually hop tables one meal a day. 9. Wash dishes as scheduled (LITs & CITs usually help with meals and do dishes 2-4 times per week.) 10. Complete other projects as assigned. 11. Cooperate with all camp personnel for the welfare of campers and the camp. 12. Follow all policies of the Leadership Development Program and Camp Wapsie. 13. CITs participate in lifeguard training. 14. CITs are responsible for assisting in a cabin during part of their stay.
