Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation decrease 0.3% in May, as compared to the same month of 2017 Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, tourist campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 9.2 million in May, 0.3% less than in the same month of 2017. Resident overnight stays increased 1.4% while non-resident overnight stays decreased 1.1%. The average stay stood at 4.4 overnight stays per traveller. During the first five months of 2018, overnight stays decreased by 2.6% as compared to the same period of the previous year. Resident overnight stays decreased by 2.9%, and non-resident overnight stays did so by 6.6%. The average stay decreased by 2.3% as compared to May 2017, standing at 5.2 overnight stays per traveller. In May, 31.9% of the bed-places available for holiday dwellings were occupied, 3.2% less than in the same month of 2017. The weekend occupancy rate by bed-places stood at 35.4%, with a decrease of 4.7%. TAOS -MAY 2018 (1/7)

Comunidad de Madrid reached the highest occupancy rate, with 76.3% of holiday dwellings offered. By tourist area, the island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 733,359 overnight stays. The island of Lanzarote registered the highest occupancy rate, with 75.9% of holiday dwellings offered. Tourist campsites Overnight stays at tourist campsites registered an annual increase of 9.4% in May as compared to the same month of the previous year. Resident overnight stays grew by 3.1% and non-resident overnight stays by 15.0%. During the month of May, 33.4% of the pitches offered were occupied, 3.7% more than in the same month of 2017. The weekend occupancy rate by pitch reached 35.9%, with an annual increase of 1.4%. 56.0% of overnight stays on tourist campsites were made by non-residents. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin with 25.4% of overnight stays by non-residents, 9.7% more than in May 2017. La Rioja reached the highest occupancy rate, with 59.6% of the pitches offered. By tourist area, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with 513,505 overnight stays. The Costa Blanca reached the highest occupancy rate, with 66.6% of pitches offered. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Benidorm, Mont-Roig Del Camp and Salou. Rural tourism accommodation Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation presented an annual increase of 9.6% in May. Resident overnight stays grew by 3.1%, and those of non-residents by 20.5%. In rural tourism accommodation, 15.3% of the bed-places were occupied, with a 6.7% increase as compared to May 2017. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 30.3%, with an annual increase of 3.6%. Price indices The Holiday Dwelling Price Index (HDPI) increased 4.0%, as compared to May 2017. The rate for tour operators and travel agencies, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (50.1%), increased by 6.0%. The Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) increased by 1.1% in the annual rate. The normal rate, which carried the greatest weight in the weightings structure in May (36.2%), grew by 2.3% as compared with the same month of 2017. The Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index (RTAPI) registered a 1.9% increase in May. The weekend rate, which accounted for 57.7% of the total weight, increased by 1.7% in the annual rate. Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation In May, overnight stays in Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels 1, holiday dwellings, tourist campsites, rural tourism accommodation and youth hostels) registered a 1.2% increase in the annual rate. Resident overnight stays grew by 1.7%, and those of nonresidents by 1.0%. The average stay decreased 0.3%, standing at 3.4 overnight stays per traveller. Illes Balears was the preferred destination, with over 8.7 million overnight stays (0.6% more than in May 2017). It was followed by Cataluña, with 7.4 million overnight stays (and an increase of 5.0%) and Canarias, with over 7.1 million, (and an annual decrease of 4.0%).
