Itinerary in Detail DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN QUITO Airport reception in Quito and transfer to Hacienda Rumiloma, a charming, romantic hacienda with rustic luxury on the flank of Pichincha Volcano, overlooking the city. Overnight Hacienda Rumiloma DAY 2: QUITO Enjoy a private city tour of colonial Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beginning in the new "Amazonas" district you will pass by the American Embassy, House of Culture, and the Legislative Palace where stone murals record the country's history. The old colonial center includes the bustling Independence Plaza, the narrow street of La Ronda, the dazzling gold-leafed altars of La Compania Church, and the gorgeous San Francisco cathedral. Visit the Mitad del Mundo Equatorial marker and ethnographic village and museum for a fun and informative examination of the curiosities of life on the Equator. We will enjoy lunch al fresco at a lively café in the colonial square. Overnight Hacienda Rumiloma. [BL] DAY 3: GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Private transfer in the morning to the domestic airport for the flight to the Galapagos [Avianca #036 Quito/Galapagos 09:00-11:30], you are met by your naturalist guide and transferred to the M/Y Eric, Flamingo or Letty. After the welcome buffet lunch, travel by bus to the highlands to visit La Galapaguera, a breeding center for giant land tortoises in their natural habitat. Return to the yacht for the Captain s welcome cocktail and dinner. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 4: GENOVESA We spend the entire day on Genovesa (Tower), considered to be one of the most spectacular Islands in Galapagos for bird species. This morning, we have a wet-landing at Darwin Bay, a coral sand beach where swallow-tailed and lava gulls gather near the tide pools. Enter a forest of Optuntia cactus and mangroves where colonies of great frigate birds nest. In a dramatic display, the earthbound males inflate their redthroated pouches to attract females as they fly overhead. The trail leads through a rich inter tidal zone where your naturalist guide helps you identify a wide diversity of wildlife. After the walk, we can swim and snorkel from the beach with sea lions in these warmer northern waters. Following lunch, you will have a dry landing at Prince Philip s Steps which takes you to the forest of Palo Santo trees, where red-footed boobies nest. Striking Nazca (formerly masked) boobies nest near the trail. In an open lava field, observe large numbers of storm petrels, and if you are lucky, we will see the elusive short-eared owl. Following the walk, kayaks are available for paddling along the shoreline. Look for the beautiful red-billed tropic bird usually found in the crevices. Returning to the Eric, we set sail early to motor to the western islands. Enjoy your naturalists briefing followed by dinner. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 5: SANTA CRUZ Disembarking this morning onto the Zodiacs, visit Caleta Tortuga Negro (Black Turtle Cove). The Zodiacs maneuver through a series of coves and inlets surrounded by mangrove swamps. Here you may observe pairs of mating sea turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, and golden rays. Following lunch, visit Cerro Dragon, on the northern tip of Santa Cruz Island. Along the trail, we find Darwin finches, Galapagos flycatchers, Yellow warblers, Audubon shearwater, and the brilliantly colored endemic land iguanas. You may also observe the Greater flamingo feeding in saltwater lagoons, as well as stilts, pintail ducks, sandpipers and more. The view from the summit of the hill is lovely, taking in the vast forest of opuntia cactus and fragrant palo santo trees. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 6: FERNANDINA / ISABELA This morning, we have a semi-wet landing at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina; the youngest and most pristine Island in Galapagos. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory. Flightless Cormorants build their nests on the point and Galapagos Hawks soar overhead. After lunch, disembark at the base of Alcedo Volano, at Urbina Bay. Here we find 4 miles of exposed coastal seabed and remnants of marine life, brought -3-

to the surface during a dramatic uplift in 1954, following a volcanic eruption. The marine remains of coral skeletons, some of them waist-high, are visited after a wet landing on the beach. You may observe nesting brown pelicans and flightless cormorants here, as well as giant marine iguanas which also inhabit this area. Later cross the Bolivar Channel where we often spot whales and dolphins riding the bow wave. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 7: ISABELA This morning, our excursion is a zodiac ride to Elizabeth Bay. We begin with a visit to a secluded cove lined with large red mangrove trees sheltering turtles, rays, and shore birds. We motor to the rocky islets known as Las Marielas, where a colony of nesting penguins, flightless cormorants and giant marine iguanas may be found. This afternoon, we have a dry landing at Tagus Cove. Six volcanoes flowing together formed Isabela, the largest Island in Galapagos. During the walk, we discover a salt-water lagoon, a scenic overlook with a spectacular view of the surrounding ocean and neighboring islands, lava fields and volcanic formations. Graffiti dating back to the 1800's is scrawled on the rocky cliffs. Explore the Coves by Zodiac or in one of our sea kayaks to find Galapagos penguins, boobies, pelicans and other seabirds. An excellent snorkeling opportunity is offered here after the walk. Following the evening s briefing and dinner, a sky full of stars draws us out on deck to observe the galaxy. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 8: SANTIAGO / RABIDA This morning, we have a wet landing at Puerto Egas, Santiago. Stroll with your naturalist guide along the shoreline looking for octopus, starfish and other sea life caught in the tide pools. At low tide, catch a glimpse of marine iguanas as they feed on exposed green algae. Watch for great blue herons, lava herons, American oystercatchers and yellow-crowned night herons. Our walk ends at the grottos, deep pools of clear water where we encounter fur sea lions once on the verge of extinction. Before returning to the yacht, there is a snorkeling opportunity with opportunities to view massive numbers of brilliant tropical fish. As an alternative, you may use the kayaks to explore the marine environment and residents without getting wet. Following lunch this afternoon, we disembark on Rabida Island, located off Santiago. Rabida sports the most diversified volcanic rocks of all the islands and is considered the geographic center of Galapagos. The dark red sand beach originated from the erosion of volcanic stones. Follow a trail leading to a salt-water lagoon, and hopefully observe Greater Flamingos as they feed. Brown Pelicans also nest in the mangroves at the far side of the lagoon. Following the walk, the snorkeling is excellent at the beach. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 9: SANTA CRUZ Travel by bus to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. The scenery gradually changes as we wind our way through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos. Here we visit the tortoise reserve where we encounter giant tortoises in their natural habitat. We visit Los Gemelos, Spanish for The Twins, a pair of large pit craters, and habitat for the brilliant red male vermilion flycatcher. A special treat is a stop at "the tunnels," the largest lava tubes found in Galapagos, and eye-popping evidence of the Islands volcanic origins. Later, we visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. Here you may observe all three tortoise corrals and the breeding center with new hatchlings and miniature tortoises not yet ready to be repatriated to the wild. Scientists from all over the globe work at the station and conduct biological research from anatomy to zoology. We also visit the Van Straelen Hall with exhibits and a short video presentation. Back on board the yacht; enjoy the Captain s Farewell cocktail followed by dinner and a briefing. Overnight onboard the Eric, Flamingo or Letty. [] DAY 10: RETURN TO QUITO After a morning visit to the San Cristobal Interpretation Center, your guide returns you to the airport for your mainland flight [Avianca #037 Galapagos/Quito 12:30-17:00]. Overnight near the airport at Hosteria Rincon de Puembo. [B] -4-

DAY 11: ANDEAN HIGHLANDS Departing after breakfast, travel north into the Andean highlands, stopping along the way in small villages to experience local culture and specialized handicrafts such as weaving, woodcarving and leather goods. A special treat for this day is lunch at the Huarmi Maqui women s weaving cooperative, a nonprofit organization established to assist local indigenous women to hone their skills and learn how to independently market their goods. Classes in women s rights and healthcare are also offered to the local population. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch of local cuisine at the cooperative, courtesy of the students. Your final destination for this day is one of the area s elegantly restored colonial-era haciendas, set amidst verdant gardens and forests. Overnight at Hacienda Zuleta. [] DAY 12: ANDEAN HIGHLANDS Hacienda Zuleta, the former home of Ecuadorian President Galo Plaza Lasso, is an authentic working estancia. You will see the activity all around you, as workers go about their duties of a typical ranch - milking the cows, tending the organic gardens, training the beautiful horses that are available for the guests pleasure as well as the chagras (Ecuadorian cowboys) needs. Today, you may visit the internationally recognized Condor Huasi Project, the only condor reproduction and rehabilitation protection recognized by the Ecuador Andes Condor protection agency. You may also visit the earthen mounds of the pre-incan Caranqui people, the best preserved relics of this culture in all of Ecuador. Closer to the hacienda itself, the cheese-making facility is a delicious tour, and the embroidery workshop offers a look at the work of the talented women of the community. Optional activities may include horseback riding or mountain biking through the many trails of Zuleta, amidst the breathtaking scenery. Overnight Hacienda Zuleta [] DAY 13: OTAVALO MARKET / LAGUNA CUICOCHA / QUITO After a delicious breakfast, visit the world-famous indigenous market at Otavalo. These traditional meeting points have been a vital link of the highland Indian cultures since pre-incan times. This is a magnificent opportunity to witness native peoples, traditional clothing, animals, flowers, fruits, vegetables, and hand crafted goods displayed in colorful arrays. Following lunch at a lovely hacienda, your guide leads you on an exhilarating hike to Laguna Cuicocha on the flanks of Volcan Cotacachi, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Return to Quito by early evening. Overnight Hosteria Rincon de Puembo [BL] DAY 14: DEPARTURE Catch the hotel shuttle to the airport for your return flight home.
