Teen Counselor Philosophy The Virginia 4-H program recognizes that teenagers have the greatest opportunity to influence younger children. Younger children look up to teens even more than they do adults. In essence, younger children want to be teens more than they want to be adults. Thus, teen counselors have the greatest opportunity to make a lasting impression on 4-H campers. Junior 4-H campers are always watching teens because teen counselors serve as heroes to them; someone they hope to become like someday. Since teen counselors are closer to the age of the campers, they have the advantage of being more in tune with the likes, dislikes, and concerns of campers. Junior 4-H camp counseling provides a great opportunity for adolescent 4-Her s to participate in 4-H by developing leadership and life skills. In a camping environment, teen counselors often make the difference in the lives of younger campers with their energy, enthusiasm, skills, talents, and by being a friend to the campers. For these reasons, 4-H Camp teen counselors are valued for the important contributions that they can make to the Spotsylvania 4-H camping program in. Description of Teen Counseling Teen volunteers serving as 4-H Camp teen counselors are non-salaried staff who have agreed to fill defined roles in the camping setting. 4-H camp teen counselors supervise children in the 4-H camp setting, serving in place of the parent and assuming responsibility for the well-being of the campers in their care at all times. Their primary role is to appropriately supervise 4-H campers. This is a very important role in the camping environment. Given this fact, a 4-H camp teen counselor must possess a positive, role -model aspect in their character and well-being to serve at Spotsylvania 4-H Camp. Condensed Teen Counselor Job Description Be leaders in developing a wholesome camp spirit: be friendly to everyone learn and use first names set a good example help the campers feel at home encourage camper participation in all activities respect the camper s right to have ideas bring out hidden talents of the campers go over the camp schedule carry out instructions preside at meals promote character Serve as class assistant or helper and/or teach a class.
