Welcome Messages Welcome Message from President of Commonwealth Lawyers Association The 16th Commonwealth Law Conference is being held in Hong Kong from 5th to 9th April 2009 at the Hong Kong Conference & Exhibition Centre. Some 1,500 lawyers, judges, and legal academics from all around the world, together with their families, will attend the conference. I am confident that they will receive a warm welcome from their hosts, the Law Society of Hong Kong. The Commonwealth Law Conference was last held in Hong Kong in 1983 and there have been significant developments within the legal profession during this time. These changes are reflected in the theme of the conference, The Dynamics of Law in a Rapidly Changing World. The streams of the business programme will speak to Constitutional Issues, Human Rights & the Rule of Law; Corporate/Commercial Law; Judges, the Legal Profession & the Community and Contemporary Legal Issues. The conference will also include high profile keynote addresses, an exhibition and a number of satellite meetings from other Commonwealth and legal associations which will take place in the wings of the conference. A unique programme of social and networking events has been designed to ensure that all those who attend the conference will have an opportunity to meet colleagues from different jurisdictions, exchange experiences and build friendships that will continue long after the closing ceremony. Indeed, those who attended the last conference in Hong Kong in 1983 still speak of the quality of the business programme and the unrivalled hospitality that they enjoyed during their stay. I know that the enthusiasm of the current organising committee will ensure the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference is equally as successful, if not better, than that which was held in1983. I encourage all lawyers and their families to attend the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference in Hong Kong which promises to continue to build on the success of previous conferences, such as the last Commonwealth Law Conference which was held in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2007. This event reinforced the standing of the Commonwealth Law Conference as an international legal tour de force. As always, all branches of the legal profession, including judges, magistrates, public and private sector lawyers, academics, paralegals and executives of the Commonwealth Law Associations, are welcome to attend the conference and discuss those issues which are relevant to the day-to-day practice of law in their respective jurisdictions and which, taken together, both reflect the common legal heritage of many Commonwealth countries and, perhaps more importantly, continue to underpin the rule of law throughout the Commonwealth. I look forward to welcoming members of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, other lawyers and their families and guests to the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference in Hong Kong, an event which I am sure will be a truly memorable and enriching experience for all who attend. Ron Heinrich President Commonwealth Lawyers Association Welcome Message from President of The Law Society of Hong Kong I extend to you a warm welcome to come to Hong Kong for the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference. This promises to be a conference with a difference. Hong Kong is probably the only host jurisdiction of this auspicious conference that is not itself a member of the Commonwealth. This event will provide delegates from abroad to see for themselves the growing strengths of the legal system in this former British colony since it was handed over to China in 1997. For over 10 years under Chinese sovereignty Hong Kong has continued to operate the common law and rules of equity under the one country two systems model provided for by our mini- Constitution the Basic Law. This is a distinguishing badge of this conference. The Organising Committee has been hard at work in assembling for you substantive working and social programmes. Some of these are outlined here. You can be confident that we will provide the quality and diversity that the Commonwealth Law Conference is known for, accompanied by the exceptional hospitality of the Law Society of Hong Kong. We also promise a spectacular view of our world famous harbour as the conference venue is in the Convention and Exhibition Centre. In short you will have a memorable and enjoyable experience. I look forward to welcoming you to Hong Kong for the 16th Commonwealth Law Conference. Lester Huang JP President The Law Society of Hong Kong
