Spotlight on MCR Trip to Traverse City Some of the club members went to Traverse City on Friday September 20 for the weekend. It was pouring rain when we got up in the morning, but we started out anyway with the hope that it would stop. We met at Birch Run for breakfast at the Exit Restaurant. After a nice breakfast buffet, we caravanned with the club up to Traverse City for a cruise on Friday night. We drove around the Leelenau Peninsula for a while before we found a place to eat dinner. We ate at a place called Dick s Pour House. It was a bit cold and windy out and the restaurant was crowded, but the food was good. March 2004 www.motorcityrockets.com 2 of 6

In the morning, Jack Tokie was nice enough to let us come to his auto shop to wash our cars before the show. Amazing how rain can make a car so dirty. After the cars were clean, we drove to the dealership Cherry Capitol Oldsmobile-Cadillac for the show. There were quite a lot of cars at the show. The day warmed up nicely, so in the afternoon, after we took a group picture, we went for another cruise. We drove around Traverse City (our cars got a lot of attention!) to see the sights and then over to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. We stopped at the old abandoned hotel and storage area for the Dunesmobiles. Jack told us that back in the 1950 s the Dunesmobiles took people over the sand dunes. They can t do that anymore because of the damage that it causes. Jack owns the #4 car, one of the Olds 88 s that was used as a Dunesmobile. We had a leisurely drive back to Traverse City to go to a pig roast / pot luck at the house of a friend of Ron and Jack s who was nice enough to invite us to his place. There were a lot of cars there not just Oldsmobiles. After we ate and it got dark, we had a bonfire. Amazing how many stars you can see in the night sky when you are away from the city lights. At that time, you could still see Mars, too. It was a nice, relaxing weekend and I can t wait to go again this September. I m sure it will be even better. March 2004 www.motorcityrockets.com 3 of 6

V. MEETING MINUTES January 2004 The January meeting was held at Laurie and Doug Hill s house. Thank you for having us and as always good eats were brought by everyone. The Spring Dust-Off Cruise-In and Picnic was discussed. We are looking at the same location as last year, at Rotary Park in Livonia, but thinking about reserving the whole park. This will take place on May 16 th. There was also some talk about dash plaques or trophies for the Cruise-In. Saturday, April 24 th is the joint outing with the R.E. Olds Chapter to the Oldsmobile Museum in Lansing. This will be a nice road trip with a planned route on back roads. Questions will be answered along the way. Attendance needs to be confirmed by April 10 th so we can provide a headcount. We will get free admission to the Olds Museum, and the R.E. Olds Chapter will provide the main course for lunch. The flyer for this is at the end of this newsletter, as well as on the MCR website. There was some discussion of the OCA and MCR Road Show at Norwalk on Sunday, August 1 st. James Kryta of Inline Tube and Dick Miller have been talking about a joint sponsored show. They would like us to consider sponsoring an all Oldsmobile car show, car corral and swap meet. This would be open to all Oldsmobiles, not just performance. There would be paved lanes with grass parking. We are trying to get the OCA to sponsor it, but there may be some issues with racing being held at the same venue by Dick Miller. James will be working on a list of requirements. There is a Vista Cruiser Car Club Hell Michigan Road Trip and Homecoming Show not sure of the date. MCR s last road trip was highlighted in January s Journey with Olds on page 18. Current members if your OCA membership is up for renewal, please make sure you get your renewal sent in. By OCA rules, all MCR members have to be OCA members also. For assistance, please contact Alan Wilcox (MCR Treasurer). VI. MCR Club Events We need suggestions for Club events for 2004. SHOW DOWN AT HIGH NOON Saturday, April 24, 2004 R. E. Olds Museum Members of the Motor City Rockets and the R. E. Olds Chapter will be having a second joint venture. This time the members of the MCR will be coming to Lansing. Members of our Chapter will be hosting at the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum starting at noon. Jerry Garfield, who is a member of both Chapters, reported at the annual meeting in January, that the MCR are excited about this venture. Jerry says the MCR intend to correct that count in Lansing. A challenge has been made folks! At this time the MCR plan to meet at the same Meijers on 8 Mile and I-275, time to be determined but most likely about 8:00 or 8:30 AM. We are planning a route along Grand River not on the Interstate with some stops and surprises along the way! The R. E. Olds Chapter will be providing a meat cookout of some kind. President, Ken Nicholas is organizing this event. The plan is to cook the meat dish and have a picnic type meal. Members of both groups will bring a dish to pass and there own beverage (no alcoholic beverages). Badgley s will provide table service (plates, plasticware, & cups). We will plan to eat between noon and 1pm. Following the meal, there will be guided tours of the R. E. Olds Transportation Museum. If any of our members are experienced in giving the tours please step forward. The Museum is going to open their doors for all of us at no charge. However, if they provide tour guides, there will be a fee. I know some of you have done tours or possibly know somebody that does, so if you are willing to do this for that day, please call Judy Badgley at 517-337-0444. If you have never had the opportunity to have a guided tour, you have missed out on something special. The information the guides provide is very enlightening. Jerry Garfield has also arranged for a special surprise speaker. He promises we will enjoy hearing what they have to say and that we won t want to miss a single minute of this day. Let s make this day special. Parking for all our display cars will be available behind the Museum. And what a great display this will be. Great cars, great food and most important great friends! Please offer to help Ken Nicholas with this event. He can be reached usually in the evening at 517-663- 2397, or email him at mroldskcn@aol.com. For MCR members contact Jerry Garfield to help at (248) 683-3158 or e-mail him at jegarf@aol.com Take this opportunity to step forward and help. This is a rain or shine event. I know as much as we hate cleaning the cars if they are out in the rain, they were built to be out in the elements.
