LAKE ERIE CHAPTER # 3738 March 2011 Volume 2 Issue 3 SPONSORED BY: LAKE ERIE HARLEY DAVIDSON 38401 CHESTER AVON OHIO DIRECTOR S CHAIR MIKE COTRUFO Inside this issue: Director s Chair 1 With spring just around the corner, I know that most of you have cabin fever and want to be in the great outdoors! Well, I couldn t take it anymore, so on a business trip to Las Vegas (yes, a true business trip), Me and a buddy had to rent a couple of Harleys. We rode through the Red Rock Canyon and then north into the Valley of Fire! What a blast! I rented a Road King and Tim had a Streetglide. Both of them black beauties. We rode through the Mojave Desert (winter is the best time to ride in the desert) and into the Moapa Indian Reservation, where everyone was looking at the bikes. I had to be back in Las Vegas later that same day for a meeting, so our ride was brief; only 8 hours but it was still great getting out and riding again! I know every one of you can t wait and, the wait is almost over. That being said, I hope that you have taken the precautions getting your bike ready for the riding season. I had to put new tires, battery and starter during the winter and my scooter is ready. Make sure that you and your bike are ready to ride. Now for some housekeeping, Dennis Mullen, our Head Road Captain, is still looking for additional Road Captains for 2011. We need more Road Captains to ensure safe rides for everyone. There is a form on the web site you can print, fill out and drop in the box or you can contact Dennis directly (contact information on the back page). Also, one of our HOG members, Michelle Nemeth, will be speaking at our General Membership meeting in April about her ride, the Cleveland Ride for Kids. Page 2 DIRECTORS CAHAIR - CONTINUED Mike Stevens said the charity sounded good, so I thought that I would pass it along to you. It looks like an entertaining ride that ends in the Cuyahoga Valley. The ride is $35.00, but you earn rewards for every pledge that you get. Check it out at: http://www.pbtfus.org/rideforkids/events/2011/ cleveland.html Just for the ladies, don t forget, the LEHD Garage Party is set for March 26 th. The HD Techs at Lake Erie want to let you in on some basic information about your bike and how to take care of it. Refer to the calendar in the LEHD HOG entrance at lakeerieharley.com. Last but not least, I wanted to send out a special thanks to everyone who volunteered at the St Paddy s Day party on March 12 th at the dealership. Ken Pleat, his wife Denise, Ron Long, Karen Gilley, John Gudin and others (too many to list, sorry, those are the only ones that I remember; old age). We couldn t do it without you. That s all I have for now. Let me know how I can better serve you as your Director of the best HOG Chapter! Anyhow, be cool and I ll see you (out on the road) soon Mike Cotrufo RINGO SAYS - ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - RON LONG Hi Everyone, I hope you made it to the soup and salad party, if not, you really missed a good time and some great food. The Ohio State HOG Rally is scheduled for July 14 through 16 in Richfield. The website is up and running but you cannot use a credit card to register on line (some problem with the website). At this time the best way to register is to print out the registration form, fill it out a and mail it in. The cost is only $30.00. this year the registration fee does not include a shirt. If you do want a shirt, pin or a patch you can order them separately (they are priced on the registration form). With riding season just around the corner it is time to ask that question. Are you and your bike ready?? Lake Erie Harley Davidson is having a tech night on Friday March 18 from 6 to 8 PM. It could be a good thing to check out. It is a chance for you to talk to the techs that do all the work in the service department. You might learn something that keeps that trusty ride, Trusty. They also have some service specials that you might be interested in. You can check out the details on the websites. In early April, some of the officers will be attending H.O.T. (formally P.O.T.) or Hog Officers Training The course had been expanded to include all officers, not just the primary officers (hence the name change) we are going to beautiful Buffalo, N.Y. I will have to see just how much snow they have left before I can decide if I want to ride this year. I hope to see everyone somewhere in the near future (out on the road) Ride Safe and have fun Ron RINGO Long

Page 4 OHIO STATE HOG RALLY The Cuyahoga Valley has been chosen as the site for the 2011 Ohio State H.O.G. Rally and what a site it is! There is fun in every direction! The Valley and the surrounding mountainous area are home to 2 ski resorts, giving us great scenic rides created just for motorcycles. The fabulous host hotel with indoor pool, whirlpool and 9 hole putt-putt golf course among other activities, sits on the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Ride along the Crooked River and stop to see the many beautiful waterfalls. Take a break and ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to experience more scenic views and hear the stories of long ago. Tear yourself away from the National Park and ride in areas made for bikers. Winding, twisty roads will take you through the heart of the Amish Community. Around every curve, over every hill - the scenery is gorgeous. All things Amish can be found on this route including great food. Remember to keep your eyes open for the occasional horse drawn buggy and the trail they leave behind. Some great activities are being planned for next year s Rally. 62 rooms have already been booked at the host hotel so make your reservations now. The hotel for next year's Rally is a Days Inn located at 4742 Brecksville Rd., Richfield, Ohio, phone # 330-659- 6151. Room rate is only $85/night if you mention the Rally. See you next year on July 14-16 in the Valley for a great time! For more information visit our website at www.ohstatehogrally.com!!note!! There has been a problem reported with the web site. Page 5 Ceiliúradh Lá Fhéile Pádraig Or Celebrate St. Patrick s Day. That is how the Irish say it (at least according to Google that is how they say it). And it was a fine turn out at Lake Erie Harley Davidson for their St. Patrick s Day Event. There was corned beef and cabbage and a drop of cheer to be enjoyed by all. The Corn Hole tournament was going hot and heavy with a few twist turns and surprises. I did not get to stay to see who won but it appeared that everyone was having a grand time. A word of thanks to all the chapter members that helped out at the event, and to Tom at the dealership for cooking. If you missed this one, make sure you make it out to the next event on April 15.

POTHOLES Well, the show has melted and guess what is under it. POTHOLES!!! As spring gets into the swing of things and you get out for those first rides, watch out. You can be on a clean piece of pavement and there will be random holes, some of them small, some, well, not exactly small. And don t forget the seams on the interstate. If you are out there and changing lanes, you need to check traffic and check the surface where the pavement seams are. They tend to open up in the spring. Hopefully the patches will be in place soon.

Page 11 DAY FOUR Day four out on the road. Chasing that next sunrise. It raind a good part of the day yesterday but you made it through without too much trouble. Only had to stop one time to let that huge downpour run its course. While you were sitting under the canopy at the gas station, that old man came over and started talking about his 45 WL. It had the tank shifter, buddy sear, leather saddlebags with the chrome studs and that slick old tank emblem. It was 1948 and he had traded in the World War II surplus bobber he picked up when he got back stateside. It was amazing how fast a half hour went by talking to that wise old gentleman. You shook hands, he got into his Buick but rolled down his window to hear you spin the steed to life. You smile, remembering the encounter as you put the last couple of things in the bags and make the morning checks. There is 320 miles to cover today, your wife walks out and gives you a kiss as you throw a leg over and stoke up that iron pony. She settles in and you drop into first gear. Out of the parking lot and up on the road. You make a couple of turns and head down Hwy 150 to county road 152, take a left and look for Burkes Springs Road and take a right. Just a little bit and you find Makers Mark Road and follow it back past a little house and into the driveway, You look around and just kind of take it in. On the tour you find out the whole concept of the drive up liquor store is actually pretty old. You do a little of the souvenir thing and saddle back up. Time to head out. All secure, you thumb the starter and point toward the exit. You stop at the little house (it is actually a café) and grab a quick bite of lunch. Now back on the road in earnest, you make your way back to Hwy 150 and head easterly over to Hwy 52, pick up 595 over to 21 and wind up on 421. Just a short hop and you find yourself in the Daniel Boon National Forest. You pick up 89 and wind through the forest, ending up in London. You throw on a bit of fuel and a bottle of water. Threading your way through the country you work your way south and a little east picking this road and that one, Once you get lost and have to turn around, well, not the worst detour you have ever had, At least all the roads were paved. You cross over into Tennessee and stop in Petersburg to check what is left to do. Given the time of day you drop down and pick up Interstate 81 down to exit 407. Another 40 minutes or so and you are in Gatlinburg. Yup, it is a tourist trap but there is a lot to see and do. You walk hand in hand with that gal you love, eat a good dinner and go back to hotel. A good night sleep and it is day five out on the road TAKE CARE OUT THERE - SEE YOU SOON!!!
