On behalf of the camping school faculty, we eagerly look forward to having you with us at SBR. The course liaison for this school is Matt Monroe (matt.monroe@scouting.org). Please do not hesitate to contact either Matt or myself if you have any questions prior to the school. The following information will help you prepare for NCS. A BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A, B & C) completed within the past 12 months, is required and must be completed prior to your arrival. Please bring the completed form with you. If you do not have this required form, you will need to obtain a physical at your own expense prior to beginning class. The cost will likely be a MINIMUM of $100. Plan to arrive between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (local time) on Saturday, May 12, 2018. Departure will be after graduation on Friday, May 18, typically immediately following breakfast. If your travel schedule requires you to arrive early SBR has accommodations beginning on Friday afternoon and includes lodging and two meals (dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday) for an additional $55. Your council will be billed if you arrive early so be sure to consult with them prior to arriving early. SBR has made arrangements for ground transportation from the Charleston Yeager Airport or Prince Amtrak stations for $45.00 roundtrip. Driving directions to SBR are attached. Note: Shooting Sports Section Participants You must have NRA Rifle and Shotgun Instructor Certifications prior to your arrival. If you do not have the NRA certification, you can attend an NRA Instructor Training prior to arrival. Complete, correct BSA uniforms are required. The BSA Field Uniform (Scout shorts or long trousers, Scout shirts, Venturing shirts, Scout socks) or the BSA Activity Uniform (Scout shorts or pants with Scouting golf or t-shirts) will be worn at camp school. Complete field uniform is required for evening meals, worship services, campfires, and other formal activities. National Supply will have a trading post at National Camping School where you will have an opportunity to purchase limited edition items. You can also preview and purchase items to be sent directly to your home on their special Camping School website at: http://www.scoutstuff.org/bsa/special-collections/camp-school.html. Housing will be in platformed wall tents with showers. Cots are provided, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow, if desired. Some walking will be required. Please dress for the weather. The telephone number at SBR is 304-465-2900 in case of emergency. Internet Wi-Fi is available throughout the SBR base camps. Cellular coverage is available throughout the camp property as well. Additional Housing Details Participant lodging is in 10x12 tent on wood platforms. Tents do not have electricity, but phone charging stations are available nearby. Cots are provided. Checklist for All Participants Welcome to National Camp School! You should arrive between 9:30 and 11:00 am. Please do not arrive late. Below are a few things to do upon arrival: 1. Scout Leader Uniform Inspection Sheet Uniform Inspection. Conduct the uniform inspection with common sense; the basic rule is neatness. 1 Attendance. Presence at inspection merits 15 points. Headgear. Headgear is optional. Boy Scout leaders wear the olive visor cap, campaign hat, or troop-approved headgear. Varsity Scout leaders wear the blaze visor cap. Cub Scout pack leaders wear the olive visor cap. Den leaders wear the same visored cap as the youth they serve. 20 pts. 20 pts. Shirt/Blouse and Neckwear. New long or short sleeves, or official long or short sleeves with appropriate loops on epaulets. Neckwear is optional but must be worn according to specifications in the Insignia Guide. Male Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders wear the long- or short-sleeve uniform or official shirt. Female Cub Scout leaders wear either the official long- or short-sleeve yellow blouse, official long- or short-sleeve shirt, or the official long- or short-sleeve uniform blouse.
