Welcome Salton Road Bike Facility and Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge Project Let s talk!
What s Happening? New pedestrian bridge and bike overpass Located at Salton Road over Highway 1 Project start date: Spring 2017 Project completion: Within a year Project cost: $3.9 million including a Bike BC Grant for $ 1 million
Why are we building this? Through the UDistrict public consultation process in 2015/2016 we ve heard from residents that more cycling and walking options are needed. The project fits with the City s updated Official Community Plan (OCP) vision of making biking and walking more delightful. The project enhances our existing cycling network and meets Council s goal of building a complete community. The project improves public safety, reduces green house gases and supports healthy active living.
Neighbourhood plan The key feedback we received from residents as part of the UDistrict plan: 1 Integrate the community and the campus. 81% of people were in favour of a new bike/pedestrian overpass 2 3 4 Provide more housing and shopping. Improve walking, cycling and transit. opportunities. Make it safe and easy. Create neighbourhood gathering places. across Highway 1 to support safe walking and cycling in the U District.
Building a complete community A complete community is one of the four cornerstones of Council s 2015-2018 Strategic Plan. The City is working to make Abbotsford a community of inclusive, safe and green neighbourhoods, connected to convenient and affordable transportation and vibrant commercial centres, built on the foundation of our cultural heritage and natural beauty. We recognize that an efficient and effective transportation system affects a number of key city priorities and we work closely with other levels of government to support community mobility. That means we capitalize on projects like this one that provide an opportunity to improve the transportation network in the city. 604-864-5514 eng-info@abbotsford.ca
Cycling is part of our big picture One of the visions in our updated OCP is to make walking, biking and transit delightful! Residents will choose to get around by foot, bike, and transit because they will be convenient. We do that by prioritizing active transportation options. This project realizes this vision. The OCP target is that 25% of all trips in the city are made without a vehicle, which is only 7% today!
What will it look like? This project will be built using a Legsby Road, Calgary design/build process. The designer will develop the bridge to meet our budget. These are some examples of other similar projects. Public art will be incorporated into the project. Highway 17, Victoria Leverett Circle Bridge, Boston
