In 2015, the community, city council, and staff leaned in to develop the 2016 city budget. A community survey helped to identify seven key areas of focus: Enriching the Community, Public Safety, Community & Economic Development, Stewardship, Health & Social Services, Effective Government, and Essential Infrastructure. The city is focused on these seven priorities and is actively working on projects, large and small, that contribute toward the city s betterment. Mayor Gere will share how after nearly three years of active community involvement the 2016 Comp Plan is nearing completion. The city s financial health will be discussed as well as the commitment to maintaining and improving our infrastructure to ensure the city is being a good steward of the resources and the trust our residents have placed in us. Our sponsor for the March luncheon is Scott Richards Insurance. Without reliance on advertising gimmicks, Scott Richards Insurance enters its seventh decade of serving Anacortes and Northwest Washington. Their story is told through the thousands of satisfied customers who found the right (and often less expensive) coverage through Scott Richards access to multiple insurance carriers, guided by a staff of local veteran agents. Scott Richards is proud to support the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce and looks forward to another 70 years of providing a local choice for auto, home, boat, life and business insurance. The lunch will take place at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge ballroom from 11:30am to 1pm. Please RSVP and pay online or in the chamber office to receive the $15 luncheon rate. Payment at the door at the time of the luncheon will be $18. Financial solutions Anacortes Office for life. (360) 588-0153 Member FDIC peoplesbank-wa.com a message from the president I love how spring pops out shortly after the New Year in the Pacific Northwest! My plum tree is budding out and my crocuses are in full bloom. Pretty soon the daffodils will paint the fields yellow, hotels will start booking up and the guests will be here in full force partaking in our little piece of heaven. There s the rub living in a postcard destination. Giving up some peace and solitude for the hustle and bustle of good old commerce! But you know what? We have it pretty good here. I m sure many of you, like me, have visited many seasonal destinations where the shops are literally boarded up in the off season. I don t think there is another island destination like ours, with the infrastructure and amenities that we have right here, year round! So as our guests arrive, we ll be in full swing with our Experience Anacortes Brand Promise Strategy. This isn t just a chamber endeavor; it s a full community effort. It s a way of showcasing what and who we are as a destination unlike any other. And in addition to our natural attractions are the warm and friendly establishments that welcome these people in and make them feel good. They may or may not remember what you said to them, but they will most definitely remember how you made them feel. So when you see someone walking down the street that is obviously a guest, stop them and say hello. Ask them if they are enjoying their stay. Make them feel welcome. Happy guests come back, and they bring their friends! This time of year is also the start of the boating season. We also live in one of the most beautiful boating destinations in the world and host one of the world s largest bareboat fleets! If marine trades Anacortes was well-represented this year at the Seattle Boat Show, which ran from January 29 through February 6. Now in its 69th year, there were representatives from the Anacortes Marine Trades group selling boats and services, and hosting seminars at the Boat Show University. There were also free fishing and boating seminars for attendees to enjoy. The Seattle Boat Show is produced by the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), which is the nation s oldest and largest regional marine association, representing more than 700 companies. While the NMTA is best known for the Seattle Boat Show, it is also an indispensable voice for its members in Olympia advocating on their behalf for boating, recreational fishing, tourism and workforce issues. 2 you made it down to the Seattle boat show in January, you would have seen a very large presence from the Anacortes marine trades. And don t miss out on our very own Anacortes Boat Show this spring from April 8th 10th. A great opportunity to see some great boats and meet some of our world class marine trades representatives! Pleet is very involved in the community, serving on the boards of several nonprofit organizations in both Oak Harbor and Anacortes. He is the current president of the Skagit Valley College Foundation Board of Governors and serves on the board for the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Pleet is also active in the Northwest Estate Planning Council and is president-elect for North Whidbey Sunrise Rotary.
