PAGE 8 Tarettes Corner Who are the Tarettes? Just a bunch of gals who run around the club in red jackets? Like a clique? What exactly do they DO, anyway? Do we still need them, now that we have s p o u s a l m e m b e r s h i p? Legitimate questions. Here's how we came to be, who we are now, and where we're going: According to our oldest living Tarette, Marge Baxter, the Tarettes were established in 1943 to give wives of the QCYC male captains something to do. I'm sure it was great at the time; just a way for the ladies to connect during wartime. That was 70 years ago this March! But, baby, we're a whole lot more now. As the new Tarette President, my primary role is to recognize and safeguard our Tarette legacy as a vital extension of the QCYC family now and in the future. Here are some of the things we are proud of: * We host numerous memorials f o r o u r Q C Y C f a m i l i e s, hopefully, soothing those tender times. * We host time honored QCYC functions at minimal costs: The September Steak Fry The November Friday Night Social The December Captains' Dinner The June Taco and Tequila Night (with our Yard Sale) * We host many events at no cost to our Tarette members: The Tarette September dinner meeting The Tarette March Celebration Tea The Tarette June dinner meeting * We provide full service of the QCYC Opening Day Breakfast. * W i t h y o u r h e l p, o u r p h i l a n t h r o p i c e f f o r t s distributed $3,000 last year to The Treehouse Organization and Bainbridge Island Support Foundation, in addition to hands-on volunteering. *The Tarettes give $2,000, annually, to QCYC toward its facility needs. Our last year's gift helped continued funding of the docks' safety ladders. * We attend regular Women's Interclub Council, or WIC, luncheons, nurturing much valued Grand 14 relationships. * We are a women's organization that supports and celebrates each other. Our Tattle Tale monthly publication not only gives info on upcoming dates, and officer's reports, but keeps u s w e l l i n f o r m e d o f o u r members' health issues and, or, needs for comfort. This is particularly important with the loss of a spouse. We hold on tight to our lifelong friendships. * We are an auxiliary of QCYC and as such, pledge our support in assisting the QCYC officers, for the good and wellbeing of our club and its members. And, now, we are entering a very exciting time! Spousal M e m b e r s h i p h a s b e e n recognized and applauded by QCYC. What a wonderful avenue in which to create new opportunities, dissolving misconceptions between the Tarette organization and our QCYC family. After all, we are all in this boat together! We won't sink, we'll just go with the flow and have a blast doing it as the family we all are! My best, Sistee Lentgis Tarette President
