Have you ever been on a road trip? Where did you go? Dream Big Imagine that you owned your own car. And not only is it all yours, but you can pack it up and drive it anywhere a road will take you. Where would you go? Once you have a destination in mind, now think what your packing list would include. What would you need if you went here with your family for two weeks? Unless you re a packing pro (or you forgot a few things!), chances are you came up with a pretty big list. A two-week vacation is a long time! Getaway Car Thankfully, you won t have to cram everything into the trunk of the imaginary car you ll be driving to your dream destination. You ll be able to put some on the roof of your car, too But first, you ll have to design the best way to do this!

Plan a road trip and build a carrier to pack your luggage! Packing 101 When you put items on the roof of your car, you need to make sure they are secure. Not only do you want to make sure your luggage makes it all the way to your vacation spot, but you also need to make sure that your car stays safe on the road! Many cars have roof racks, which make it easier to attach items to the roof of your car. Some people tie luggage directly to the roof rack, while other people put car top carriers on top of their roof rack. Car top carriers are containers that come in all different shapes and sizes, but they all have one main goal: to safely transport belongings that can t fit inside a car. Roof Top Storage To design your roof rack and car top carrier, you ll need: Your Classic Car Pencil Wooden Craft Sticks Super Glue Plastic Stretch Wrap String Hex Nuts (or another household material that you can pretend is luggage) Process: 1. Experiment with the materials listed to the left and brainstorm how to best transport your luggage on top of your Classic Car. Remember: You want to create a container that holds your luggage in all kinds of weather, as well as make sure it can easily be secured to your car! 2. Begin by creating a sketch of your design below. Be sure to use a pencil so you can make changes as new ideas come to you. As you draw, use the list of materials to help you label each part!

Sketch of Your Design: Build Your Prototype Now that you have some initial thoughts, it s building time! Which do you think makes more sense to build first: your car top carrier or your roof rack? Think about the best process and then get started! Once you have your roof rack and car top carrier ready to go, secure them both on the roof of your Classic Car and take the car out for a spin. You ll want to make sure these are sturdy before you add your luggage. Packing Time Once you re sure your car top carrier is ready for suitcases, pretend that the hex nuts are luggage and slowly add them to the top of your car. Add them one by one until your car top carrier is as full as possible. Then take your car out for another test drive to make sure everything stays in place.

Last Minute Additions Uh oh! It seems that you forgot to pack one very important large suitcase. How could you change your luggage rack to hold even more luggage? Carefully make the changes and see how much more it can hold. If you need to dissemble your original design, that s okay! Many of the world s best inventions went through many different trials. Hit the Road Once you re confident in your building (and packing) abilities, you re ready to hit the road. Hopefully one day you will be able to embark on this adventure in real life but until then, your imagination is the next best thing. Bon Voyage! Car top carriers are containers that come in all different shapes and sizes, but they all have one main goal: to safely transport belongings that can t fit inside a car.
