Volume 20 No. 9 September 2009 HOG CORRAL NEWS SALEM HARLEY OWNERS GROUP #1997 SALEM HARLEY-DAVIDSON. 3601 SILVERTON RD., NE, SALEM, OR 97303 PH: 503-363-0634 It s Not the Destination, It s the Journey Inside this issue: August Meeting, September/October Calendars, Friday Nighters, Discovery Ride, Hub City Poker Run, Chicken Dinner Ride, Redwoods & Crater Lake, Bikers for Babies, Coast Ride, Salishak and Back, Torch Ride, and more

Guest/New Member: Bruce Radke rides a red Heritage Classic (introduced by Louise and George Allen). July Meeting Minutes: Accepted as published in the newsletter by the membership present. Director Dave Nichols: Out Riding Asst. Director Robert Grove: Dave and Patty Nichols have reached three of the four corners of the United States and are slowly making their way home again. Their scheduled return is sometime in September. Discover Oregon Ride this Sunday (August 16th) leaving the dealership at 9am and going to the Pacific Coast. Though these rides are sponsored by the dealership, our participation and support as Ride Captains is greatly appreciated and encouraged. These are great rides with the chance to meet new riders. Secretary Gayle Jacopi: Absent Robert reported that Don and Gayle had been involved in an accident on their bike. The bike was totaled, Gayle is still suffering from leg swelling and having a real hard time getting around, Don is much better and actually in attendance at tonight s meeting. Membership - Louise Allen: We currently have 111 members in our chapter with 17 new members so far this year. Historian - Leann Long: Nothing to report. Activities Ric McKenzie: Our net profit on the July 12th Poker Run was $473.79 which was a bit less than hoped for but not bad considering the weather conditions on that date. We now need to consider new ideas for fundraising efforts and would like very much to hear from the membership on what they would like to do and support. Please forward any ideas/suggestions to any of the chapter board members. Just of general interest the AMF Firebird Bowling Lanes is offering a Harley Davidson bowling league where participants can earn Harley Davidson bowling balls or bowling pins. The league plays for 16 weeks and starts on August 20th. Ric has flyers available for anyone who may be interested. Our Christmas party is confirmed with Roth s Hospitality Center in West Salem for Saturday, January 16th, 2010. We will be delivering a $135 deposit to them this month. Treasurer - Wendy Graves: July income of $2843.00 with expenditures of $846.96 leaves a bank balance of $5582.08. We are currently at 92% of our budgeted income amount but only at 46% of our budgeted spending for the year so the bank balance will be dropping quickly. Fundraisers and new members will help the most and the board is being very diligent on how to save money while stretching what we have so that we can make our donation to Liberty House and still have a good party in January. Let It Ride fund is at $30 with this evening s contributions. Have discussed having a steak feed in a park as a family/chapter event (membership responded quite favorably to steak!). Could include desert auction, but most important that we find things that the members want to support and participate in. Senior Road Captain - George Allen: Is looking for a volunteer to lead the ride from the dealership to support Sunset Chapter s poker run on September 13th. The membership proposed and decided that Dave Nichols would be the best candidate for the job with Patty Nichols assisting him as Sweep. (Welcome home Dave and Patty!!) Be sure to support the Discover Oregon rides. Information is available on both our website and the dealerships. Friday night rides are continuing and have had really good ongoing participation this year. Jim Johnson will lead the ride on August 14th. Liberty House is offering tours of the facility on set dates with the next being Friday, August 21st at 9am. This is a great opportunity to see the wonderful work we are supporting. Safety Officer - Darren Wellington: Lead the Backroads Ride last Sunday (August 9th) and had a great 2 August Meeting Minutes

August Meeting Minutes turnout of about 22 people though most of them were not Chapter members. Would like the membership to consider and report on some of their favorite rides and what made them special. Every ride entails a lot of planning (route, weather, rider skills, safety issues) and those that are most memorable (in a good way!) are usually the best planned. Please consider checking in with the people you know who have lead good rides to find out what went in to planning them and then consider leading your own ride! The Friday nighters are a really good place to start out and get a feel for what it is like to lead a group. Good of the Chapter: Shaun Rottner expressed his thanks to the Chapter for the Get Well card sent after his bike was hit while parked on the street. It will still be some time before the repairs are complete but they are at least underway. Robert Grove expressed his deep appreciation for everyone who worked so hard to make this year s Poker Run a success and such an enjoyable experience for those who participated. Every year is a learning experience but it s the people that make it a success! Newsletter Bob Fanshier: Out Riding Photographer - Keith Harris: All the pictures are up to date on the website, Trust Me!. Webmaster - Bill Churchill: Nothing new to report. The membership expressed their thanks for Bill s ongoing efforts and great work! New Business: None to present. Volunteer Recognition: Patt Brenden Vest Drawing: Darren Wellington 50-50 Drawing: Darrel Rybloom for $38.50 Pot of Gold: Shaun Rottner for $80.00 will return to $40 in September. Meeting adjourned at 7:38 pm (way to go Robert!!) Respectfully Submitted, Wendy L. Graves, Treasurer Salem H-D Discovery Ride Schedule Sept 20 - Alsea River Run Oct 11 - Wine Country Run If people persist in trespassing on the grizzlies territory, we must accept the fact that the grizzlies, from time to time, will harvest a few trespassers. 6 Friday Nighter - August 14

Wow--probably a couple of hundred Bikers turned out for the ride for the Special Olympics!! The ride started at Salem Harley Davidson, with Steve and his wife (Hot Dog Guy) there providing us all with biscuits and gravy. That was really yummy, Thank You both so much. OK--Steve just because I didn t actually SEE you doing any of the work I know you just had to have helped, or your wife would have left you at home. Come to think of it I didn t actually SEE Cliff doing any work either, but his wife Nikki was a busy little Bee keeping everything moving along. The ride was led by a Police Officer from Lebanon--hadn t run the route and really didn t know the area that well. He did a superb job and only missed one turn in Independence. We headed into West Salem, turning on to Brush College Rd. and went on to Rickreal, then on to Dallas. Somewhere around here a big bird just missed hitting us, but a short while later the guy ahead of us wasn t so lucky, a bird flew into the side of them. The bird did NOT win!! Then we went through to the Kings Valley Hwy, and on to the Benton County Scenic Route. Don t think we ever did this particular route before. Nice scenery! We took a break at the Ritner Covered Bridge. We then wound our way back through Monmouth and Independence and back to Salem. The windy road on the way back to Salem proved to be interesting. I guess a Hot Shot on a Crotch Rocket decided that the Harleys were going too slow for him, so he blew by us all at full speed. Yes, he did make it back into his lane before a car came. The Police Officer who was leading the ride REALLY RE- ALLY wanted to chase him. Too bad he didn t hit his siren and lights--and scare the devil out of that idiot. A short time later a truck was going to pull out in front of us & he probably would have, but the Officer hit his lights. That Torch Ride was so funny to watch that truck hit reverse --- fast--- bet he thought he had been had! He should consider it his lucky day! The license plate on the officer s bike said smile--i could be behind you. After all of that excitement we headed to the Riverfront Park where the ride ended. Adams Ribs donated the food for our lunch--bbq sandwiches and coleslaw-- very very good. There were 4 kids from the Special Olympics group there to Thank us all for coming and helping them out, which was great. They did a drawing for a new Harley--guess they had been selling tickets for awhile. Don t know the fella who won, but a friend of his called him at work to tell him that he had won. I bet THAT was a great feeling to be told that you just won a Brand New Harley Davidson!! Lots of door prizes, mostly t-shirts/sweats and odds and ends. There were so many that they put most of them up on a board, and called just a few. Louie won a set of wrenches (tools are always good) I won a t-shirt in X large--just a tad too big for me, so I traded it to another guy who had a sweat shirt in size med. We were both happy. I think Jim & Sherri won a CD of a good movie. Bob won some chrome cleaner & his girl friend won a plastic drinking bottle with pens etc. in it. I can t remember if Keith or Walt won anything. All in all it was a GREAT day, the weather was fantastic, the ride interesting and the companionship --a bunch of friendly Bikers--couldn t get much better--well YA--WE could have won that new Harley!!! Many THANKS to everyone involved making this a Super day for us Bikers and for all of the Kids in the Special Olympics. Marlene Schroeder 7

Salishack and Back This was the Third Run put on by the Freeloaders Tavern in Salem, and as usual they did a bang up job! Must have been about 25 or so bikes and maybe 8 or so old cars (including one pick-up--ours) Too soon for Louie to ride yet. Leaving the Freeloaders around 9:00, the 2 and 4 wheelers headed for Fort Hill, which was the first stop. For those of you whom haven t been to fort Hill lately--beware--it is all blocked off, and in order to go to any of the businesses there you have to take a turn off about 1/2 mile in advance. I guess this is to stop the jam up of traffic in that area. You also have to return that way to get back on the Highway. I guess it s good for the traffic, but I m sure NOT for the businesses. If you don t know about this in advance --well--you have missed it and would have to find somewhere to turn around and come back & a lot of people probably wouldn t be bothered. After drawing our cards there ( and keeping them) we were off to the Salishack Tavern, which is the next turn off after Salishan & then you head left for a little ways. That s quite an interesting area. We took a detour looking for a Garage Sale, so got to see new places that we never knew existed. The Salishack Tavern has a nice deck out back where they did all the BBQ chicken, ribs and corn on the cob--then on down stairs to a really cosy little yard with tables and chairs. Lots of good food to eat, with all of the BBQ stuff, fruits, bread and a couple of salads. It was really really good & we were all stuffed, so sat around until they did a bunch of drawings for t-shirts, hats etc. provided by Oregon Coast Choppers and the Salishack. We didn t win any, but Barb won a hat, also I think Dave and Ray won something. They did the drawings inside this time, so it was hard to tell who won what. After leaving there we headed to the Roaring River Restaurant, BUT they weren t open when we got there, so we all wound up next door (once again) After we all had finished our drinks they opened up---well too late for them to make any money from us, although we did go over there to draw the cards. On each deck of cards there was a stamp of a dog s paw on one of the cards & if you got that you won an extra prize. We didn t get one. The prize was several lottery tickets. On to the last stop, which was back at the Freeloaders Tavern. There we had more to eat---like we were even hungry! All we did all day was eat and drink. Anyway they provided us with a bunch of snacks. We didn t need them, but ate them anyway & they were super good. One of the pool tables was completely covered with door prizes, actually so many that each person won something twice and started on to the third time. I couldn t keep up with who won what, except for us. We won a $20.00 gift cert. to Wallerys Pizza, a beautiful set of glasses, some things that I had donated, so declined and a big bag. I asked Mike if he wanted to trade his plastic cooler thingy for my bag. Since it was all wrapped up in plastic we didn t know what kind of a bag it was, but he said sure. Well it wound up to be a guitar case---like he really needed that! Well the BIG prize was a guitar, so I took the case over and traded it to the gal for a t-shirt. Don t know if Mike wanted a t-shirt BUT he darned sure DIDN T want a guitar case! Don t know the people who won high and low hand, just know that it wasn t us---i won high hand there for the first 2 years, so guess it was someone else s turn anyway. A BIG THANKS to the Freeloaders for all of their hard work put into this Run, also Salishack Tavern for their part in making this a GREAT RUN. Tracy you rock!!!! Marlene Schroeder 8

What makes a good ride? For some of us, it is being able to share the open road with friends. For others, it is the feeling of solitude and freedom of riding alone. Whatever elements go into making up a good ride, they all are dependent on the route - unless your good ride is simply aimless meandering and not caring about the road you travel. Look at the attention to detail that the Road Captains and Poker Run Committees put into our poker run legs. Sometimes, it takes a little planning and common sense to make a good ride. Consider one of the Friday Nighters that you have ridden and really enjoyed. What was it about the ride route that made it enjoyable? I don t know about other road captains or chapter members. But there are three basic things that I consider when laying out a route for a group or chapter ride to make it safe and enjoyable. 1. The environmental conditions: a. What is the time of year? - Is there a high likelihood of rain, wind, extreme cold or heat? b. What is the time of day? Will you be riding due east, early in the morning: right into the rising sun? Will the ride be a dinner ride where diminishing light and the probability of deer might be a factor? 2. The road: a. What condition is the road in? Potholes, loose gravel in curves, unmarked soft shoulder? b. If you can t ride the road before hand, can you find out road conditions by going to Tripcheck. com or some other internet site, or the ODOT telephone number for road conditions and closures? 3. Traffic, hazards, and fatigue: a. Will the route require left hand turns without turn lanes traffic arrows during peak travel times? b. Are there hazards such as poor sight distances or poorly marked lane merges? c. Are there adequate stops for resting, gas, and water? These three considerations are not intended to be an exhaustive list, only a brief discussion about some things you might consider when planning a ride. If you haven t planned and led a chapter ride, why not consider giving it a try? If you don t want to try one on your own, ask any road captain for assistance. Who knows, you might come up a new appreciation for what it takes to make a good ride and be able to share it with others! Darren Wellington All roads lead to possibility. Wherever the path takes you - enjoy it. Xenophetes New Members Barajas, Edward Barajas, Laura Blanco, Michael 9

Redwoods, Crater Lake, & Silver Lake Day 1 We meet in the Rite-Aid parking lot. Anticipation. Excited. Clouds in the sky. Bikes loaded and a lot of road ahead. The more the better. By 8am we re ready to go. We head west on Hwy 22 to Rickreal and then south to Corvallis on Hwy 99 where we meet Bill. We continue south on Hwy 99 to Monroe where we leave the main road for a more interesting route that takes us past the villages of Greenleaf and Swisshome, Triangle Lake, and then meet Hwy 126 at Mapleton on our way to Florence. The trip down 101 is nothing new, but still nice. North of Coos Bay we hit about a half an hour of rain, but not enough to stop and put on the rain gear. By the time we stopped at the Coos Bay HD dealership the rain had stopped and it never rained again for the rest of the trip. The stop at the funky little seafood shack in Bandon for lunch was fun and amused the tourists with six leatherclad folks mingling at the crowded outdoor seating area. Great clam chowder makes the stop a good one. From Coos Bay on south, the coastline gets more rugged and is a beautiful ride. Harris Beach State Park on the edge of Brookings is an amazing little park with rock structures punctuating the beach. After a short period of viewing the rocky seashore and teasing the ground squirrels, south we go towards our destination of Crescent City. Crescent City is a small coastal town with a dock area, a smattering of motels and restaurants, and not much else. After checking into the motel, three of us take a 10-mile detour to visit a grove of massive redwoods and ferns. Very nice. Back in town we rejoin the group at a great restaurant on the edge of the dock area guarded by noisy sea lions. Day 2 After a minimalist continental breakfast at the motel, we continue south on Hwy 101. A tourist stop was made at the Trees of Mystery to check out not only Paul Bunyan and his anatomically correct sidekick Babe, but to ride the gondola through the redwood forest and walk through a winding forest trail with many hand carved items. We made one more stop in Orick to eat breakfast and take a look at the Hawg Wild biker bar next door. The next stop was the H-D dealership in Eureka. Finally, we return to Arcata and turn east to begin the windy mountainous road through the Trinity Alps ending with us thirsty and exhausted in Weaverville. The road north from there to Yreka was pleasant and scenic with frequent views of deer. The long rural ride had few towns (or rest rooms) and we settle for a stop in Callahan at the only operating business to grab some ice cream to eat while lounging on benches on their wooden porch. The fast ride on the freeway over the Siskiyou pass feels like were in a wind tunnel. We finally pull into Medford at 8pm and close down the pizza joint down the street. Day 3 A quick snack of breakfast got us ready for the next busy ride. Of course, there is the obligatory stop at the Medford HD dealership (actually in Phoenix). After picking up something most of the group forgot, we head north to circle Crater Lake. We steadily climb the forested highway higher and higher until we re over 7,000 feet and viewing the ultra blue of Crater Lake National Park. Very nice. After rounding Crater Lake 1-1/2 times we head to Diamond Lake for gas. The goal now is downtown Silver Lake. In Silver Lake we turn west and go several miles into the sagebrush to find the pile of weathered boards known as the Cowboy Dinner Tree Steakhouse. Despite being a hundred miles from pretty much anything, if you don t have reservations, you don t get in. The Legend of the Cowboy Dinner Tree includes a roast, I mean steak, or chicken, that s an entire chicken, and all the trimmings. The trimmings would be enough on their own. After the homemade marionberry cobbler, we waddle out to our bikes and somehow make it to Christmas Valley and the motel. A few drinks at the picnic table outside the rooms under the stars gets us ready for a good night s sleep. Day 4 A package of donuts from the local market provides the energy to get us to Bend for our next meal after a bit of a tour around town. In fine tradition, by the time we reach Sisters its time for a snack. The town is bustling with tourists and streets cordoned off for art displays, but we do not waver in our quest for dessert. Successful in our quest, we have enough strength for our next food and beverage stop in Detroit. Between Stayton and Salem members of the group peel off towards their separate destinations as the end of a great road trip. Four days and 1200 miles does not seem like enough. Hmmm, maybe another trip. Bob Photos are on the web site. 15

16 Rides to Come

Bikers for Babies: Saturday, August 29 th We got the perfect day for riding, just slightly cool and cloudy to start and warming up nicely even as we headed into the hills toward Mt. Hoodoo. Several members had the opportunity to have our bikes blessed before the run and the dealership offered great breakfast burritos and donuts for breakfast to get a good start for the day. Ric McKenzie led the group from the dealership to our rendezvous at Mt. Hoodoo with just a quick stop at Detroit for fuel and to leg stretching. Just over 30 bikes made the run and Keith was hopping getting pictures of everyone. Incredible Edibles catered a great lunch for the bikers from Bend, Salem and Eugene while we were entertained by a Sagebrush Rock band and the little ones having the most luck at the dunk tank. Rick Jackels won a Holiday Heritage Collection shadow box but got robbed in the tattoo contest. Still, we raised a bit of money to contribute to the over $20,000 raised overall by this event and had a great ride! Okay, coming back I did discover that the Street Bob just isn t really set up to be an off-road vehicle but the bike blessing worked and I still got to finish the ride home after taking some time to clean out the worst of the lava gravel and dust from both of us! As Darren reminded me today, you are suppose to cut to the inside of the lane on those curves for a reason. Wendy Graves September Birthdays Allen, Jane September 2 Churchill, William G.
