Acknowledgment of Traditional Owners The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges that it is located on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. This special place is now known by its European name of Melbourne. Today, Melbourne is one of the great multicultural cities of the world, and a significant meeting place. For the Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djajawurrung and the Wathaurung which make up the Kulin Nation, Melbourne has always been an important meeting place and location for events of social, educational, sporting and cultural significance. The festival presents a diverse range of art forms and experiences for all ages, like Indigenous theatre, music, literature, film, cabaret, dance and visual arts. Enjoy performances from a range of popular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, like soprano and composer Deborah Cheetham at the Melbourne Recital Centre; Jessica Mauboy and Archie Roach on stage at Federation Square and Bart Willoughby in his debut on the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ. If you re interested in dance, there s Koorioboree, a cultural dance gathering at Birrarung Marr, or experience the visual arts as you see the Ghost Net Weavers from far north Queensland weave discarded fishing nets into works of art. If vibrant discussion and debate is your thing, join in public forums that explore current issues concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Our city has a long and rich history and this festival is our way of celebrating a culture that stretches back over centuries and millennia. During the 12 days of the festival, musicians, dancers, writers, actors and many other gifted Indigenous artists will inspire us with their talents and stories. The festival program features a range of events, including a weekend music program at Federation Square, Koorioboree: a special cultural dance gathering at Birrarung Marr, and Aboriginal Heritage Walks through our beautiful Botanic Gardens. MUSIC FEDERATION BELLS ALL BELLS THAT ENDS WELL James Henry James Henry (Yorta Yorta, VIC/NSW) has composed a piece that reflects his heritage through the 39 computer controlled Federation Bells. All Bells that Ends Well ranges from contemplative to catchy, with an undercurrent that suggests the struggles of colonisation, ultimately erupting in a positive harmony. ETERNAL BIRRARUNG Deborah Cheetham Deborah Cheetham s (Yorta Yorta, VIC/NSW) composition celebrates the Birrarung, now known as the Yarra River. Experience her use of the enigmatic yet powerful quality of the Federation Bells to capture the spirit and the life the Birrarung. VISUAL ART Ghost Net Weavers Indigenous artists from remote communities weave ghost nets, creating works of art from cast-off fishing nets collected from the waters and beaches. Sit with the weavers and learn about the craft that transforms potentially destructive environmental waste material into beautiful objects. Meet the artists and make your own ghost net art. Book launch Indigenous Place What is an Indigenous cultural space and how is it located, identified and made visible through creative acts of placemaking? An outcome of a collaborative ARC Linkage Project, Indigenous Place documents selected cultural spaces throughout Australia. How can blak theatre flourish to become part of the new mainstream? Panellists will discuss how the big and established theatre companies are changing to present great art for everyone. This event was developed by Roland Atkinson (Bangarang, VIC). screen THE CREATURE FROM THE ID Djon Mundine Art historian and curator, Djon Mundine, (Banjalung, NSW) will discuss the relationship between dreaming and the shadow in your soul using a selection of Australian films as illustration. Mundine reflects on Freud and Jung s theory that a shadowy black figure, a dreaded being, lurks in the inner recess of every white European soul. A sentiment which is echoed by post-colonial writers. He poses the question, if white people s dreams feature a terrifying black figure, do Aboriginal people s nightmares feature an equivalent: a feared white man? A fresh interpretation of a modern day ghost story, The Darkside is a funny and poignant exploration of things that go bump in the night. No bookings 1.45pm PAYBACK RECORDS HIP HOP SHOWCASE Enjoy a live performance by hip hop artists from Payback Records, a record label with a focus on Indigenous hip hop. DJ Riverboi will start the beats and will be joined by young and emerging talent. 2.10pm PHILLY Phillip Murray (Wemba Wemba, VIC/NSW) aka Philly, 22, was born in the golden era of hip hop in 1991. From an early age Philly s talent for writing rhymes, dubbing beats and rapping to them publically made him a star. He s frequently in demand for gigs in his hometown of Mildura and on his traditional homelands around Swan Hill. 2.45pm MISS HOOD Miss Hood (Kurnai and Gunditjmara, VIC) has been in the hip hop and urban rap scene for the past 10 years and has shared the stage with Yung Warriors, Alter Egos, Last Kinection and Outlawz. She demonstrates an amazing sound by mixing hip hop, R n B and soul. 3.30pm BRIGGS BRIGGS (Yorta Yorta, VIC/NSW) Indigenous roots and rural upbringing in the small country town of Shepparton have given him a unique perspective. Powered by a rapid-fire, melodic and direct approach, acclaimed rapper BRIGGS is as funny as he is deep. His debut album THE BLACKLIST is a genuinely unique symphony of words, thoughts and sounds. 4.30pm WHITEHOUSE Whitehouse has something to say and knows how to play. Grant Saunders (Biripi, NSW) aka Sonic Nomad shines on vocals while his cousin Allan Morris (Dunghutti, Biripi, NSW) masters the guitar. This Koorie writing team has combined with hot Sri Lankan rhythm section D Man on bass and Cha Cha on drums to form a concoction that s fresh and highly infectious. 20 Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival 2014 21

5.30pm CRYSTAL MERCY Crystal Mercy (Kokkatha, SA) has been wowing audiences with her dynamic vocal style since 2005. Starting out as a fiery femme fatale rapper under the pseudonym, Lady Lash, she s now found a niche for her powerful voice by incorporating her love of blues and jazz into her repertoire. 6.30pm YUNG WARRIORS Two-time Deadly Award winners, the Yung Warriors are Tjimba Possum Burns (Yorta Yorta, Vic/NSW, Ynugu, Lavitja, Majuta, NT) and his cousin D Boy (Ynugu, Lavitja, Majuta NT). Earning their stripes by supporting the likes of Akon, 50 Cent, The Game and Outlawz, they continue to impress with their masterful lyrics and solid beats. 7.30pm JESSICA MAUBOY The multi-talented Jessica Mauboy (Kuku Yalanji, QLD) is one of Australia s hottest young creative exports. No bookings 1pm ARCHIE ROACH Once in a lifetime an artist with extraordinary spirit and talent comes along. Archie Roach (Gunditjmara, VIC; Bundjalung, NSW) is a philosopher and storyteller in the tradition of his ancestors. Experience Archie relaying and retelling his intimate real life stories through songs that continue to touch the hearts and souls of people around the world. 2PM CHRISTINE WARD Christine Ward (Bunjalung; Dunghutti, NSW) has enjoyed many highlights during her career as a singer, songwriter and artist and has shared the stage with such greats as Archie Roach, Ruby Hunter and Nick Barker. 2.45PM COLOURED STONE Bunna Lawrie s (Mirning, SA) Coloured Stone is an Aboriginal band from South Australia. Their music blends rock, ska and reggae with a unique Aboriginal sound, giving them an appeal that led to numerous musical awards for the band, including four ARIAS and recognition in the NIMA Awards Hall of Fame. 24 Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival 2014 25

MUSIC Djaban Slippery Eel Productions presents a country music showcase 26 Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival 2014 3.45pm ILLANA ATKINSON Illana (Muthi Muthi, Wemba Wemba, Yorta Yorta, VIC/NSW) performs acoustically, demonstrating a full and beautiful voice. Illana has worked alongside many of Australia s performing greats including Kutcha Edwards, Yothu Yindi, Tiddas, Paul Kelly, Frank Yamma and Rita Mills. 4.30pm JOHNNY LOVETT Johnny Lovett (Gunditjmara, VIC) is a seasoned country music performer. He s travelled all over Australia since the early 70s and had his own band, the Black Opals, and seven albums to his credit. 5.15pm ELLIE LOVEGROVE Ellie Lovegrove (Ngarrindjeri, SA) recently came to fame on The X Factor. Ellie has grown up with country music in her blood, performing across SA communities for the past fifteen years. Ellie made it into the top 10 of The X Factor with her soulful and emotionally charged performances. 6.15pm AURIEL ANDREWS Auriel (Arrernte, NT) has been singing from the age of four, having started her career in the 60s as a regular on Channel Nine s Reg Lindsey Show. In 2008, Auriel was presented a Jimmy Little Lifetime Achievement Award for contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music by the man himself, Jimmy Little. 7.15pm ROGER KNOX In the Aboriginal community, Roger Knox (Gamilaroi, NSW) is often referred to as the black Elvis. He started his musical career as a gospel singer in the early 1980s, defying the odds by surviving not one, but two plane crashes. With his band, Euraba, he has dedicated his life to sharing the gift of music with the world, spending much of his time playing to neglected Aboriginal audiences in remote communities and prisons. 27

CULTURAL HERITAGE ABORIGINAL HERITAGE WALK Journey into the ancestral lands of the Kulin nation and explore their rich and thriving culture on this award-winning walk in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The process of creating these works involves taking the natural fibre of paperbark and forcing it into a western female construct, the dress. Having conquered the ghosts of his past, Little Black Bastard has been newly developed with a sense of resolution, healing and completion. music WE STILL LIVE ON Bart Willoughby Pioneering Aboriginal reggae rock performer, Bart Willoughby (Pitjantatjara, Central Australia), was the first Indigenous artist to score a feature film and the first to sign a record deal and tour internationally with No Fixed Address. We Still Live On also sees him be the first Aboriginal artist to record and perform on the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ. Bart Willoughby and his guest, Deline Briscoe, pay homage to the late poet and activist Kevin Gilbert in this unique event. visual art POSSUM SKIN CLOAK STITCHING DEMONSTRATION Today in Victoria, First Nations people are reclaiming traditional cultural practice in a contemporary setting. Meet First Nations artists as they stitch possum pelts into cloaks while describing the stories represented through the artwork. Possum skin cloaks are unique to the thirty First Nations across Victoria and southern NSW.
