Introduction Newspapers have existed in American life since the colonial period. While newspapers were, and still are, published by private publishers, they often serve as the notice of record for official court and government business. The following is a list of all newspaper titles available through the Vermont State Archives Reference Room. The dates are encompassing, but it is possible for individual issues, or even years, to be missing. While searching for newspapers to use in your research, be aware that not every town had a paper. If you can t find a paper for the town you re interested in, try looking for newspapers in neighboring towns. Also, be aware that over time newspapers changed names and circulation times, merged with or split from neighboring titles, or even ceased publication. If you can t find a date you re looking for in a particular title, see if there are other titles in the same area for your particular time frame. There is a searchable online catalog to newspaper titles in Vermont, created in 2000 by the Vermont Newspaper Project. This catalog can give you information about publishers, dates of circulation, related titles, coverage areas, and more. It can be found at: http://vtnp.uvm.edu/.
