Glorious Spain & Portugal Seafarers, poets and scholars once made Spain and Portugal two of the richest and most powerful nations on earth. Feel the breath of history as you wander the narrow streets of ancient towns and explore the palaces, castles and monasteries of these former colonial powers. Relax on idyllic beaches of the Mediterranean as you enjoy free time on both the Costa del Sol and Algarve coasts. It will be a journey featuring fascinating history, distinctive cultures and extraordinary scenery. PORTUGAL Atlantic Ocean Sintra Cascais 3 Lisbon Avila SPAIN 3 Madrid Toledo 1 Cordoba Seville Monchique 3 2 Silves Albufeira 1 Granada 2 Costa del Sol Strait of Gibraltar Gibraltar 3 = overnights MONDAY, SPTMBR 19 Day 1 Departure Day Today we meet our fellow travelers at the airport to board the departure flight, ready to begin a journey filled with new and exciting experiences. TUSDAY, SPTMBR 20 D Day 2 Arrive Madrid Today we arrive in Madrid, the capital of Spain. We are met by our local representative and taken to our hotel in Madrid where we'll stay for the next three nights. We have some time to relax and freshen up after our journey before dinner. WDNSDAY, SPTMBR 21 BD Day 3 Avila - Valley of the Fallen This morning we tour Avila, one of Spain s most interesting cities, which still retains its formidable medieval walls and towers and has been dedicated as a UNSCO World Heritage Site (WHS). Next a visit to the enormous scorial Monastery (WHS) built by King Philip II, where Spanish kings are buried. Then to the Valley of the Fallen where we see a 492 foot cross presiding over a vast Basilica carved from sheer rock commemorating the thousands who died during the cruel Civil War. We then travel back to Madrid for dinner and overnight. THURSDAY, SPTMBR 22 BD Day 4 Madrid Tour - Prado This morning we will enjoy a tour of Madrid, the largest city in Spain with a population of over four million. Sites seen include the Cervantes Monument, the Cibeles Fountain and the Puerta del Sol. The highlight of our tour will include a visit to the Royal Palace with its magnificent marble staircase and scarlet throne room. This afternoon we tour the Prado Museum with its fine collection of art and then are free to wander the area until our bus takes us back to the hotel. FRIDAY, SPTMBR 23 BD Day 5 Toledo City Tour - Cordoba After breakfast this morning we leave Madrid for the ancient Castilian capital city of Toledo (WHS). There we will see the Moorish Bridge and the Church of Santo Tome with one of l Greco s most famous paintings. We'll pass the house where l Greco lived, and then visit the Museo de Santa Cruz - Toledo's most famous museum. After enjoying the perfectly preserved, incredibly narrow streets and beautiful buildings we travel on to our hotel in Cordoba. SATURDAY, SPTMBR 24 BD Day 6 Cordoba City Tour - Granada This morning we'll tour the historic city centre where we'll see "Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos" (The Palace of the Christian Kings) and "La Mezquita" (WHS), once one of Islam's most impressive mosques and now a cathedral. It is said to be the most beautiful and original building in all of Spain and is not to be missed. As capital of an independent Spanish caliphate, Cordoba developed into one of the most brilliant cities in urope. It became a centre of learning which attracted students from all over the western world and promoted active exchanges between Christian, Muslim and Jewish scholars. Narrow winding streets, small squares and low whitewashed houses, most of them with beautiful patios which can be viewed from the street, give the town a Moorish atmosphere. We'll then depart after lunch and travel to Granada and some relaxing time upon arrival. SUNDAY, SPTMBR 25 BD Day 7 Granada City Tour - Costa del Sol This morning we enjoy a half day tour of Granada. Here we visit the fascinating Alhambra Palace (WHS), a complex of buildings started in the 13th century. This was the stronghold of the Nazeri Dynasty, the last great Moorish Kingdom.
