Aboard the Santa Cruz B June 22 July 1, 2008 With Columbia University Study Leader Dr. Juerg Matter

Dear Columbian, Make your 2008 summer season truly extraordinary with a family adventure in the Galápagos Islands, a destination unlike any other on earth. Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the islands are an equatorial paradise of diverse landscapes, vibrant sea life, and an amazing array of wildlife species, many of which are found only in the Galápagos. This adventure provides an exceptional opportunity for parents, children, and grandparents alike to enjoy unforgettable experiences, with activities tailored to each. Swim alongside tiny Galápagos penguins and playful sea lions, snorkel amidst colorful tropical fish, take a boat ride through mangrove-ringed inlets, and encounter giant tortoises in their native habitat. Hike across surreal landscapes where giant marine iguanas evoke prehistoric reptiles, and spend evenings on deck stargazing to observe southern and northern constellations simultaneously. Children are especially enriched by this living, breathing classroom, where science is fun and accessible. In addition to youth leaders, a team of local naturalists and experts will join us and lead educational programs on a variety of topics. Study leaders include Dr. Juerg Matter, an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; Dr. Jack Dumbacher, an Assistant Curator and Chair of the Department of Ornithology & Mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences; and Dr. Ro Kinzler, the Senior Director of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology at the American Museum of Natural History. We hope you will join us, along with like-minded travelers from our cosponsors, the American Museum of Natural History and the California Academy of Sciences, on what is sure to be a fascinating and memorable experience you will all treasure for a lifetime. Sincerely, SUPERIOR Our programs are classified in three categories: Value, Superior, and Luxury K Eric J. Young Travelers Most children are fascinated by animals. And in the Galápagos Islands, most animals are fascinated by children! A special feature of this trip is a unique educational program specifically designed to make sure young travelers get the most out of the unforgettable encounters they are sure to have with all kinds of animals. Led by youth leaders and naturalists, separate age-appropriate activities are designed to give kids of all ages a basic understanding of science and nature, and an appreciation for this natural paradise. Local Naturalists In addition to onboard study leaders who are experts in evolution, geology, and natural history, a highlight of this customized adventure is the involvement of a team of local naturalists. These guides offer an in-depth understanding of the islands and their inhabitants, as well as a personal commitment to preserving this unique environment. Sea urchin, kirt kempter Young snorkeler

U.S. / Guayaquil Sunday, June 22 Depart the U.S. on the recommended flight itinerary, or independently. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel. HOTEL HILTON COLON Guayaquil / Baltra and Santa Cruz, Galápagos Islands Monday, June 23 This morning fly to Baltra Island in the Galápagos, where thirteen large islands and dozens of smaller ones combine to form an ecological niche with towering volcanoes, crater lakes, and stunning lava formations. Upon arrival, board the Santa Cruz, your home for the next seven nights. Watch for boobies, pelicans, marine iguanas, sea turtles, and rays. After a dry landing, follow a trail to Dragon Hill, a nesting site of land iguanas and a rewarding location for sightings of Darwin s finches, Galápagos mockingbirds, endemic flycatchers, and yellow warblers. Join the captain to celebrate your arrival in the Galápagos at an evening reception before dinner. Afterward, get your first taste of amazing stargazing. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) Bartolomé and Santiago Islands Tuesday, June 24 Start the day with a hike to Bartolomé Island s 600-foot summit for spectacular views of the island s fascinating topography. Take a boat ride around colossal Pinnacle Rock, followed by time to enjoy the beach and snorkel with Galápagos penguins. See marine iguanas graze on emeraldgreen algae beds, and watch seabirds forage along the pitch-black shoreline of Puerto Egas on Santiago Island. Either snorkel, swim, or take a guided walk to view fur seals, marine iguanas, or sea lions. Aboard ship this evening, gaze at the equatorial night sky or join in lively talks on geology, evolution, and oceanography. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) Rabida and Santa Cruz Islands Wednesday, June 25 Disembark at Rabida Island s unusual rust-colored beach to observe marine iguanas and sea lions. Walk to a nearby salt pond where flamingos come to feed on the brine shrimp, and pelicans make their nests. Snorkel or swim off the beach and see a vast array of underwater species. In the afternoon, sail to Santa Cruz Island to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and learn about a program for rearing giant tortoises in captivity. See a forest of giant prickly pear cactus, and visit the town of Puerto Ayora for a taste of local culture. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) Santa Cruz and North Seymour Islands Thursday, June 26 This morning, ride up to the lush Santa Cruz highlands to enjoy a special breakfast and to see the giant daisy trees of the Scalesia Forest. Observe vermilion flycatchers, Darwin s finches, and giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Return to the ship and sail to North Seymour Island. One of the few islands in the Galápagos uplifted from the ocean bed, North Seymour s sandy shores are home to sea lions and marine iguanas. Visit colonies of blue-footed boobies, magnificent frigate birds, and swallow-tailed gulls during an afternoon walk, taking in views of both the coast and the interior of the island. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) San Cristobal Island Friday, June 27 Disembark at Puerto Baquerizo Moreño on San Cristobal Island for a visit to a tortoise breeding center, and spot the island s mockingbirds, lava lizards, and vermilion flycatchers. En route to Cerro Brujo, where Charles Darwin first set foot on the Galápagos in 1835, visit a small islet with a thriving sea lion colony and numerous common stilts, Darwin s finches, and mockingbirds. From the beach view Kicker Rock, a spectacular volcanic formation off the coast of San Cristobal. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) Española and Floreana Islands Saturday, June 28 After breakfast, disembark on Española (Hood) Island for an exciting walk on lava terrain to see the amazing waved albatross (with a wingspan of up to eight feet, it s the largest bird in the Galápagos). During an afternoon excursion, visit other unique seabird colonies, take a dinghy ride along the island s coastline, or play on a white sand beach. SANTA CRUZ (B,L,D) Juerg Matter is a Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, and is leading research projects in the U.S., Iceland, Europe, and Oman. Juerg will discuss his current research, which focuses on climate change, as well as the unique and fascinating geology of the islands. Ro Kinzler is the Senior Director of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology at the American Museum of Natural History. She will share her knowledge of earth sciences, and discuss the processes that formed the volcanoes of the Galápagos. Jack Dumbacher is the Assistant Curator and Chair of the Department of Ornithology & Mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences. His interests include ecology and evolution, and his discussions will focus on understanding diversity within animal species. In the afternoon, snorkel along the cliffs of the partly submerged Ecuador Volcano, on the northern tip of Isabela Island. Explore the coast by dinghy as naturalists discuss the dramatic geology of the area. Tonight, celebrate the voyage at a farewell dinner.
