EAST TENNESSEE REGION, ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF AMERICA Chartered in 1957 Smoky Mountain Antiquer IN THIS ISSUE TN Aviation Museum Volume 51, Number 3 May-June 2016 Getting in on the Secret! June 11, 2016 This ETR tour in June was a fun mix of driving, showing off and exploring as we cruised in to the 2016 Secret City Festival in Oak Ridge. Fossil Plant Tour Mystery Tour Solved BOARD OF DIRECTORS Robert Quillin President Lafayette Williams Vice President Sharon Jurkonie Secretary Charlie Simpson Treasurer Tom Trame Immediate Past President Elby Loyd Tim Seay Wayne Tudor Joe Viravec Board Members Beth Fisher Linda Royston Newsletter Editors First, members gathered that morning at the Karns Public Library before beginning a beautiful half-hour drive along country back roads to the American Museum of Science and Energy. There, we joined the Clinton Region AACA at the Secret City Cruise-In, which was part of the day-long Secret City Festival. About 15 ETR antique automobiles parked together on the grassy field in front of the museum. Nearby, the tour hosts had erected an open-air hospitality tent where we gathered for a variety of breakfast yummies. After a look around the cruise-in, members explored the festival itself via a free shuttle service that went from one festival activity to another. Some of us particularly enjoyed the craft fair, stage performances and WWII battle reenactment. (continued on page 2) Roger Frazee Webmaster

Robert s Ramblings Half of this year is history! I hope you have had as much fun with your antique cars as I have with mine. So far this year, eight new members have joined our club, and we ve actively been encouraging several more prospective members. Secret City Cruise-In (Continued from front page) It was a hot day but very pleasant in the shade. Several members stayed longer than they had planned since there was so much to see and do. The secret is out! Tour Hosts John & Jennifer Payne, Tim & Beth Fisher Thanks to Tim Seay, Beth Fisher and Elby Loyd our club now has two new banners, a banner stand and a supply of magnetic club signs. During June s Secret City Tour, we had several car enthusiasts admiring our magnetic signs and the club banner. (Contact club treasurer Charles Simpson if you d like to order your magnetic signs; $17.60 per pair). We have had a busy year so far with nine informative and interesting events. Please check the last page of this newsletter for a schedule of what s coming. We have eight tours scheduled and two more possibles to round out 2016. Up next is a Sunday trip to Oak Ridge to see the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Following that tour, we ll be attending TVA s celebration of the 80th anniversary of Norris Dam. The festivities will include tours of the powerhouse and dam, family fun and activities, music and food. Then, on a Sunday afternoon in August we ll tour the back roads of Blount and Sevier Counties. September will bring us a real change of pace when we tour Brushy Mountain Prison which has been converted to a tourist attraction, and October will find us taking a trip by train to Stearns, KY for an overnight tour. Let s give a round of applause to all of our great tour hosts who are helping us to have so much fun and fellowship with our antique cars! Robert Quillin quillin1@bellsouth.net 2

TN Museum of Aviation Tour April 23, 2016 ETR members and guests visited the Tennessee Museum of Aviation in Sevierville on Saturday, April 23. Members participated in a self-guided tour through the 35,000 sq. ft. facility enjoying historical aircraft, collectible cars and the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame Museum. Museum founder Neal Melton gave us a 20-minute flight demonstration of his Douglas A-1H Skyraider, a veteran of the Vietnam War. After the museum visit, our co-hosts Bob and Sharon Carter led us on back roads to lunch at Holston s Kitchen. Members enjoyed socializing on the outdoor porch while dining. After a leisurely lunch, a few members made the 14-mile drive to the Bush Beans Visitor Center in Dandridge. Even though the area had experienced heavy rain and wind the night before, the weather was beautiful on the day of tour. Sandra & Robert Quillin 3

Board Meeting Review From Auburn... It was reported at the May board meeting that ETR had a good representation at the Top Wrench Competition that month. Some members were asked to judge at the event. The board is in the process of reworking the club brochure ( windshield flyer ). Two ETR banners will be purchased (one will be one-sided and one will be two-sided). The banners will be used at cruise-ins and events to bring attention to our club and recruit new members. The board voted to discontinue the participation point process and participation sign-in books effective immediately. The process was proving cumbersome and intrusive. The board felt that members time together was better spent relaxing and socializing. Sharon Jurkonie Secretary New Members! Bob & Marlyn McMullen Dale & Karen Less Paul Soares & Mary Richesin 4 The Auburn meet incorporated the Spring Auburn Auction by Auctions America at the Auburn Auction Park, site of the AACA Special Spring Meet. Kingston Fossil Plant Tour June 21, 2016 ETR members and six guests met early in Farragut to drive US 70, Tennessee s first state road, west to the Kingston Fossil Plant. TVA s Tom Miltonberg led our plant tour beginning with a presentation about its history and operations. The plant generates eight billion kilowatts per year, enough to provide power to 540,000 homes. The steam plant itself is located on 800 acres with an additional 1,200 acres for surrounding tracts. ETR members Jerry Guthrie and Vic Varady added much to the presentation sharing their engineering knowledge and work experience. Then, during a walking tour we visited the plant s generators and turbines. Following the tour, members and guests enjoyed lunch at Gloria Jean s Fine Southern Provisions in Kingston. He suggests using search names such as vintage car commercial, old car ad, or you can get specific with Pontiac commercial. Some of Hocker s particular favorites include: Ford Falcon commercials starring Peanuts comic characters (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu ery=peanuts+ford+falcon+commercial), A Coach for Cinderella (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmdh5ln5j_0) and the 1969 Opel Kadett commercial with the Skipper from Gilligan s Island (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=rgqt0axgiki). Top Wrench - 125 Years Old! April 28 marked the date of the 125th anniversary of the Top Wrench Competition. This year s competition was attended by more than 400 students representing 12 high schools. The students were excited to see our antique autos. Sgt. Richard Payne of the TN Air Guard said they appreciate our interest and financial support. He especially thanked our ETR members who participated as judges during the event: Blake and Sue McCampbell, Tom Trame, J.W. Weeks, Jeff Turner, Len Royston, Elby Loyd, John Bennett and Bob Carter. Robert Quillin 7

Mystery Tour Solved! May 21, 2016 It was a beautiful spring Saturday when ETR members met at Sam Houston s memorial statue in Maryville. From there, members traveled through an area of historic homes before taking a cruise along Blount County back roads. The highlight of the tour was spent at the home of Ralph and Carol Ivens who have built a large steel building to house their many antique cars and retro Ford Thunderbirds. Several restored pedal cars and tractors were also displayed. Ralph has collections of oil stations, license plates, Texaco memorabilia, gas pumps, neon signs, and even a collection of Dolly Parton souvenirs. The back of the building houses a wooden structure that contains even more collections, too numerous to mention. Everyone found something that (continued on page 9) 8

Mystery Tour (Continued from page 8) captivated their attention. The Ivens were so cordial to allow us to visit their organized and interesting showroom; they even provided snacks and drinks for our group. To round out the 37-mile driving tour, we took more Blount County back roads eventually making our way to lunch at Country Steak n Eggs along the river in Townsend. Tour Hosts Blake McCampbell & Randy Moats 9
