Overview Since April 2016 it has been a requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC for all nurses and midwives in the UK to annually renew their registration and follow the process every three years in order to maintain their registration. Revalidation is designed to strengthen the renewal process by introducing requirements that focus on: Up to date practice and professional development Reflection on the professional standards of practice and behaviour as set out in their Code Engagement in professional discussions with other registered nurses or midwives The requirements are: 450 practice hours, or 900 if renewing as both a nurse and a midwife 35 hours of CPD including 20 hours of participatory leaning Five pieces of practice related feedback Five written reflective accounts Reflective discussion A health and character declaration Professional indemnity arrangement Confirmation NMC Guidance states that although Organisations are not obliged to provide specific support to the nurses and midwives they employ, it is good practice to support them to provide safe and effective care. It should be recognised that the nurse or midwife must take responsibility for their own successful revalidation, however to support this the ESR solution offer nurses and midwives nursing revalidation tools within Self Service, removing the need to use a separate system. This adds to the wider benefits that deployment of Self Service can bring.
Benefits The ESR approach utilises the appraisal functionality, allowing Managers to run the appraisal and revalidation process in tandem Note: Revalidation is not an Appraisal. A separate appraisal/review should be created for the employee for employment based reviews linked to performance and pay progression The ESR National Questionnaire reflects the revalidation requirements and includes guidance for the registrant Evidence of reflective discussions can be recorded on the ESR Questionnaire The ESR Self Service functionality supports the recording of those employees involved in the revalidation process ESR interfaces directly with the NMC website and records are updated daily with revalidation dates and other key registration data NMC supplementary role can be assigned to designated people within the Organisation to identify those assigned to the reflective discussion and or confirmer roles as appropriate ESR Notifications are triggered and sent to the NMC registrants, role holders and managers reminding them when their revalidation is due. All ESR Revalidation notifications to the registrant include a reminder to register for NMC Online Continued Professional Development credits can be recorded against courses and reported on The Professional Registration dashboard now includes a Revalidation tab which provides summary and detailed information (status information and revalidation due shortly) which managers can use to support staff through the process
What it looks like Employee Initiates Revalidation A nurse or midwife can initiate the revalidation process using the appraisal functionality in ESR If Employee Self Service has not been deployed by an Organisation a line manager can initiate the Revalidation process on behalf of the employee If the employee who is participating in the reflective discussion with the nurse or midwife is not their line manager they can be added to the review process via Self Service Documentarty evidence can be attached to objectives within the Revalidation Review
Confirmer Notification When a nurse or midwife initiates their Revaldiation their line manager/confirmer receives a notification The line manager/confirmer then has access to update the Revalidation via Manager Self Service
Revalidation Questionnaires Both the Nurse or Midwife and the line manager/confirmer have access to a bespoke NMC Revalidation Questionnaire. Local Questionnaires can also be created The Registrant Questionnaire signposts the nurse or midwife to the NMC website and mandatory templates
Supplementary Role Holder Employees who act as confirmers or NMC participants can have the NMC Revalidation supplementary role added to their ESR record Any employee who is identified as an NMC Revalidation Supplementary Role Holder will receive reminder notifications
Notifications 12 Months 6 Months 4 Months Employee Line Manager NMC Revalidation Role Holder Short Notice ESR interfaces with the NMC website and NMC registration and revalidation dates are updated daily A series of revalidation reminder notifications are sent 12 months, 6 months, 4 months and at short notice, if a change results in the revalidation is made at a date less than 4 months from the current date. These notifications are sent to employees, line manages and NMC Revalidation Role Holders
Credits Against Courses Professional NMC CPD credits can be recorded against courses in ESR, including details of the type of credit (participatory or individual) This number of credits a course attracts can be viewed via the course catalogue
