Department of Natural Resources and Mines Queensland coal mines and advanced projects Industry update Queensland has a rich endowment of high-quality coal, with an inventory estimated in 2010 at approximately 34 billion tonnes (Bt) (raw in-situ), identified by government and industry exploration. This includes both metallurgical (coking and pulverised coal injection or (PCI)) coals and thermal coals, with a substantial amount still considered potentially suitable for open-cut mining. This coal inventory is expected to be much larger now as a result of considerable exploration in the last five years, especially in the. The contains almost all of the State's hard coking coal, and is the most important coal-bearing province in Queensland. In addition to supplying all of the metallurgical coal currently mined within Queensland, mines operating within the basin also produce a wide range of thermal coal products, principally for export. Queensland coal exports are also contributed to by high-volatile thermal coals mined from the Clarence-Moreton and Surat basins in the south-east of the State. Other thermal coals mined in Queensland include those within the Tarong and Callide basins which are used in mine-mouth, coal-fired power stations for electricity generation. Production of saleable coal from Queensland mines during 2013 14 increased to 228.9 million tonnes (Mt) compared with the saleable output achieved in the previous financial year (206.0 Mt). This production was contributed to by 41 open cut mining operations which accounted for more than 85 per cent of saleable production and 13 underground mines. During the period, 208.6 Mt, worth A$25.24 billion (free-on-board basis), was exported to 30 destinations overseas, with markets in Asia accounting for over 85 per cent of sales (refer to Figure 1 for production statistics; and Figures 2-4 regarding current coal operations and projects). Approximately A$1.95 billion (83 per cent) of the royalties paid to the State in 2013 14 were attributed to coal sales. Metallurgical coals dominated exports at 153.9 Mt (up from 128.6 Mt in the previous financial year), with the remaining 54.7 Mt of export sales comprised of thermal coals used for electricity generation and in industrial processes. Additional domestic sales of thermal coal within Queensland amounted to 22.7 Mt. During 2013 14, China overtook Japan to become the State s most significant export destination, accounting for 25 per cent of all coal exported from Queensland with 53.0 Mt sold, comprising approximately 40 Mt of metallurgical coal and 13.0 Mt of thermal coal. Exports to Japan totalled 51.4 Mt in 2013 14, up from 46.1 Mt in 2012 13. Other significant markets were India, Korea and Taiwan, which imported 30.9 Mt, 24.9 Mt and 10.2 Mt respectively from Queensland coal producers in 2013 14. The Caval Ridge open-cut mine, owned and operated by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, continued to ramp up production to a nominal capacity of around 5.5 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a) of saleable coal, and made its first shipment of coal in April 2014. New mines currently under construction in the are the proposed underground operations of Eagle Downs and Grosvenor, Quick facts (2013 14) with both mines planning to use longwall mining methods to produce prime hard coking coal for export. As at 30 June 2014, general indicators of coal exploration activity within Queensland as measured by the number and coverage area of granted exploration tenure within the State, remained relatively high with just over 980 Exploration Permits for (EPCs) covering an area of about 270 000 km 2 granted and in force. During the 2014 15 fiscal year however, there was a substantial decrease in the coverage of EPCs in Queensland, with 800 granted EPCs remaining as at 30th June 2015, covering an area of about 193 000 km 2. During 2013 14, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimated coal exploration expenditure by private companies within Queensland at A$324.2 million compared with an estimated expenditure of A$453.9 million for the previous year (ABS 8412.0). Despite the current downturn in the industry, proposals for mine expansions and other new coal mining projects are continuing. These include a number of very large scaled thermal coal mines in the.
