International Field Experience Spring 2017 Learn from Japan s Earthquake and Tsunami Crisis Course Information (Revised: 2/23/17)

Background: ICDR Initiatives for Community and Disaster Resilience - is designed to approach natural disaster related issues from soft social science and policy perspectives. March 2011, magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami occurred in the Tohoku (Northeast) region of Japan. Need for a focus on emergency/disaster management, disaster preparedness, and community redevelopment and resilience and challenges that come with this. Focus on most damaged rural cities: Rikuzentakata & Ishinomaki: Challenges with ageing population and lack of vital industries on reconstruction of buildings, downtown areas and revitalizing the community.

Objectives: Gain in-depth knowledge from academic professionals at Tohoku University in a 2½ day workshop; Interact with public officials, nonprofits, and community organizations of Rikuzenakata and Ishinomaki cities, and; Engage in dialogue with locals to capture the forgotten stories of struggle and hope in the aftermath of the crisis. Each participant is responsible for arriving in Sendai City (location 1.a) by Sunday, 6/18. Bus will be provided for the locations shown below. Each participant must arrange all other non-program transportations. 2. Rikuzentakata City, Iwate One of the most damaged cities in the region it lost 7% of its population from the disaster. You will interact with people in both private and public sectors and learn about their reconstruction efforts. 3. Ishinomaki City, Miyagi A town also massively damaged by the disaster. You will meet with organizers of an NGO working to rebuild their community. 1.a Tohoku University, Sendai City, Miyagi 1.b Iwaki City, Fukushima A 2½ day program to be offered by the International Research Institute of Disaster Science and the Economics Department of Tohoku University. The program will consist of class sessions and site visits to Iwaki City in Fukushima.
